Saw some of your vids and think they are really cool. How or where could I learn to rework or build an amplifier from scratch like this, ive wired up a few guitars and modded some pedals? Any info on learning this would be excellent I understand the dangers of high voltages also.

Do you wire everything like this? Just like people used to 'breadboard' stuff... On their kitchen break boards! Nice work

Yo hows it going dude! Yes the oldschool method, as apposed to printed circuit boards.. which I dislike very very much. The problem with PCB's is that you get miles of itsy bitsy thin copper trace on that thing, very close together. A lot more resistance, heat and noise can result. I like to make things as point to point as possible and having 1 ground passage. Makes things neater with less unwanted noise. How you been anyways? Hows that LP???!!!!

In today's market of amplifiers, it is seen as an upgrade to handwire with the extra labor and skills it requires to do so. I believe handwired amplifiers sound better and are more robust to gig with.

Nice job, but what's the reason for moving the choke?

+WDeeGee1 if the Choke´s, Transformators or Coils facing in the same direktion of Magnetic Field they influence each other if like he did turn it 90 he cuts off those influence to a minium

OK This is A master build of a guitar amp. Absolutely top quality. I would have a custom made amp from you all day any day. But this is not a rebuild or a renovation because it is a new amp made with a mixture of new parts and a few old parts from the old amp, It is not made anything like the original. If this was an old antique or boutique amp it would now be worthless and would be worth about as much as a normal tube amp of similar modern type. That said, I think it sounded fantastic and your skill is amazing. The potentiometer/volume pot on the board, what is it for, is that to bias the tubes?

The resistor was presumably to 'fix' a bad taper on the pot is my uninformed guess?

Hi I just picked up one of these. I replaced all the tubes with JJ's. While its fully functional, the amp sounds really crappy. thin sounding. when pre amp stages are turned up is very muddy. Where should i start??? thanks

The electrolytic capacitors would be the next best thing to replace as they would be pretty stuffed I would imagine. After that, the coupling caps. Cheers

Sorry a bit confused but, what was the main goal for this modification? Was it to make a more Marshally style amp or?

There isnt anything specifically Marshall about this circuit because it is a Laney circuit. Sure it has similarities, just like Soldano circuits, but it is purely a Laney circuit. The reason for rebuilding the amp was because the original was not built optimally and sounded very bad. It had a PC board which had burnt out components and multiple grounding points all over the chassis. This created much unwanted noise. I simply rebuilt the amp using as close to point to point wiring as possible, used higher quality components, and had 1 grounding point. I also moved the electrolytic can caps off the chassis and lined them with its corresponding tube. I wanted to find out the true tone of the circuit by building it as higher quality as I could. That was the sole aim. Thanks for the question, have a great day!!

YES I know I have 3 AORS was a test sense on this side of the Pacific us yanks have the horrid notion anything that's UK just got to sound identical to a Marshall or we will make it such lol. Approx. 90% of all the PT/AORS that are customized here in USA are SLO or Marshalled sad as it is. Mine are stock I have an AOR30 combo, AOR50 head and an AOR100 head.

Ahh, I see what you mean, yes I have noticed that too, anything must be modded to sound like something else. Its quite a phenomenon. I just got word from the person for whom I built this amp for, and he's more than super stoked with the quality of the tone. He's been walking down the Mesa path for sometime but he can't get what he wants from them. This particular gentleman knows his quality tones inside out, has gone the whole hog with every amp and has ended up selling everything apart from the AOR50 I built for him. He calls it 'Bigfoot' and the fact he still has it in his possession speaks volumes about it is fine praise indeed for the AOR. When I have it in my workshop to work on her, I hate giving it back. They are very cool amps with a quality tone and so glad to hear that you have three, very cool!! Keep a hold of them, as they are true sleeping giants.

I like other amps as well its funny non come close to these for diverse gain adjustability. I also have another sleeper amp a Fender Super 60 that's also an underdog stateside. Also a Carvin Xv212 Boggie killer. I paid 180 for it at a pawn shop ditto the Super 60 was like 349.00 used. The Super 60 has a sorta Rivera/SOB vibe to it. And the Xv2112 a Mk2 vibe. Not all Mesa's are the same.

Spot on Marco! I own 3 AORs, a 100 and 50 watt head and a 100w 212 combo Laney called a "quarter stack". I have returned all to stock configuration with upgraded caps and higher quality tubes (gold pin pre-amp tubes). They sound better than the JCM800 or the TSL-122 I once owned and they have more grunt and pure tone than my 2007 JVM410 head. I do love my Marshall but my favorite tone comes from my Laneys. Better than any Marshall IMO.
