I think I speak for everyone after seeing Clarkson's segment, when I say; he needs a spin-off show about epic car stories. No jokes or tom-foolery, just quality factual documentary.

You're right. I love him cocking about with the other two stooges as much as anyone. However, he has done some marvellous factual documentaries and I wish he'd do more. Check out "The Greatest Raid of All" about the WW2 raid on the dry dock at St. Nazaire. Absolutely superb television and entirely fascinating.

It had a real classic top gear flavour to it. They made a whole bunch of films like this between like 2008 and 2013-ish, and it was those films that got me into cars. When I was 19 I literally bought my second car, a Lancia Fulvia, based on my vivid memory of their original Lancia film, shot probably around 2010-2011. This is the kind of stuff that makes these guys worth watching.

For those who haven't seen this short of the Audi Vs Lancia battle, it is one of the greatest shorts in motoring show history. Sell your children if you have to to see it. Clarkson is at his peak in a serious history lecture, something he excells at if you have never seen him present seriously outside of motoring, and the story is almost fantastic, parts are impossible to believe how Lancia did what they did to stay competitive with a 2 wheel drive machine against the might and money of Audi and 4 wheel drive.

EnFraBa7 you're point being, lancia has won more championships than any other, and hasn't competed with a factory works team since 91 or had any private team with manufacturer input since 92. Rohrl helped win one of those championships, juha kankunen (the best ever) and miki biason did more than that. Rohrl was good but he wasn't as good as kankunen, as juha didn't go at ridiculous speeds, he was able to find the limit and stay safely below it to finish the season in a very good position. And his ability to do that in so many cars that were so different and with so many teams and manufacturers in different countries when there were much more significant differences to what th modern differences between cars are. Mcrae was superman in a British prepared subaru or ford but in the superior french Citroen he struggled. As did burns coming from successful drives in british prepared Mitsubishi and subaru. Lancia were the top dogs from the 60s until fiat sacrificed them. They had to homologate rally cars so often built good rally cars then tried to make a road car from it. (Ducati style).

This is absolutely glorious. I'm going to take a TON of flak from my fellow Americans for what I'm about to say, but bollocks to them. I will make the argument that the 037 is the greatest rear wheel drive car in history, and here's why. Rally is the purest, most accessible form of racing, and it's done EVERYWHERE. Therefore, it has the popularity and loyalty factor. Then along comes Group B, with it's absolutely bonkers tuning and lack of restrictions (for both drivers and spectators alike), and the inevitable appearance of 4 wheel drive cars in the form of the venerable Audi Quattro. Then along comes Walter Rohrl (a spectacular human being) in an equally bonkers REAR WHEEL DRIVE (yes, that's 2 wheel, not 4) Lancia that positively STOMPED ze Germans in their Audis, in places like the dusty field of rocks known as Acropolis. Yet, for some reason, like Jeremy said, nobody remembers the 037. To me, it's screams Dark Horse. And I like Dark Horses. Especially ones that win against thoroughbreds.
