I respectfully disagree. I drove both and the gearbox in the CTR is far superior than the rubbery GRC shifter. As far as driving dynamics, yes there is wheel hop when accelerating hard from a stop, but let's not forget the CTR wasn't meant to be a drag strip star. Its a hot hatch that thrives on a circuit or backroads. FWD cars inherently have torque steer, but Honda engineers have done an outstanding job dialing it out as much as possible with suspension tuning, helical LSD, and electronics. I've driven a ton of FWD cars and the FL5 CTR has the least amount of torque steer, even with 315hp on tap. Lastly, you talk about the GRC being more "special". I know this is subjective, but when you take into account exterior and interior styling, driving dynamics, exclusivity, and lineage, the Type R gets the nod IMO. The GRC's stocky, muscular exterior and 3-cyl turbo engine sets it apart from any other Corolla hatch, but the interior pretty much looks like any other Corolla, other than the seats. The Circuit has microsuede seats but the Core has plain jane cloth seats that are underwhelming. The CTR's interior is like no other Civic. The Recaro seats, the red carpet, the suede door inserts...it just feels way more premium than the GRC. I think both cars are future classics, but the CTR will be more highly regarded. In your use case, where AWD comes in handy during the rain/snow season, I can see why you would choose the GRC. You're a winner either way, no matter which of these 2 hot hatches you choose!

I live in the Northeast, and having owned FWD, RWD and AWD and driven each in the snow, I'm loving AWD. The GRC engine seems to be phenomenal! 300 HP from a 1.6 liter 12 valve DOHC head. That's pretty special. 100 HP per cylinder. Add another cylinder and you have 400 HP. Add a 5th cylinder and say bye-bye to a stock Audi RS3. A 6th cylinder and bye-bye BMW M2. So incredible output for the price. I've owned a 2009 Audi TT-S Roadster and a 2013 Audi TT-RS. Audi has gone crazy with pricing on their latest Turbo Inline 5 RS cars, so I consider the GRC a baby RS3. Great value compared to other hot cars released in the past 4 years.

As a type R owner, it’s a great car to drive. I actually reserved a Corolla first because of the AWD. For me, the biggest issue with the Corolla was the storage space and back seat room…wayyyy too small. The type R is a better car if you only have one car. If you have a regular daily already, then the Corolla is a better 2nd car. It’s just not as complete as the type R.

I would pick the Civic Type R because Hondas tend to have better aftermarket support than Toyotas and I like the sound and performance of the CTR. When it comes to cars with this level of performance, I think it's better to pick the one with better aftermarket network. However my opinion is based on looking back at older Hondas that still get aftermarket support compared to Toyotas like the Celicas and MR2.

I am a Honda fanboy and drive a S2K for years. I will pick the GR Corolla all day. Morizo approved. Homologation engine. GR Four. It can drive on track, gravel, mud, rain and snow. People can argue that the FL5 is a second faster on the dry track. How about a wet track? I live in PNW, we have rain and snow 70% of the year. Other than the bigger storage space and legroom there is absolutely no way the FL5 can be faster or better in this kind of weather.

And the power to the ground issue it’s solve by swapping the wheels to 18X9.5 wheels. You still have to deal with torque steer tho. The dash inset reminds me of early 911 and just seems a lot higher quality but because no AWD, no thanks; Especially after adding another 100hp. That said my outgoing modified Audi S3 was leaps and bounds faster than either, but only came in DSG, so again it sent me to the Corolla for AWD and manual trans... Kudo's to Toyota.

@MrTresto personally would rather own the FL5 than the 340i that I see at every second corner....thats my personal opinion...south africa the FL5 is 950 000 rand and the 340i is 1.3 million rand...pretty big difference Having said that the FL5 and corolla GR here are close to identical costing....why on earth would I buy a corolla, unless I live in snow.

@MrTresto type r is quicker around the track then a 340i. Plus BMW drops like a rock in depreciation.

@@van_der_lindeDAIt isn't at MSRP, it is when dealers mark it up.
