The Civic Type R never existed in our market. Nor the GR. They did add 5k to the VW this past year. But in large, this kind of performance has never been 'affordable'. I guess these hot hatches's profit rates are not that high.
As a Golf R owner, I also factored in how much the car settles down and becomes comfortable in comfort mode with the adjustable shocks- essentially gives you the dynamics of two vehicles in one. After working stressful 12-16 hour shifts, sometimes you just want the car to take care of you when it's not lighting your hair on fire. The AWD was also very important for my geographic location (untreated icy roads with hills)

It depends a lot on what you mean by "faster". If you go and look at C&D's lightning laps chart, you'll find that the FL5 CTR laps VIR faster than cars like 911 S (2013), F-Type R (2021) and M2 Competition (2019), amongst many others...which I feel still qualifies that it's almost as fast (and indeed, faster) than many contemporary sports cars.
@aaronschen9896
Жыл бұрын
CTR is the closest but also the highest priced in practice. LL interpretation is tricky, it gets faster every year for similar cars. Tires are getting better but I think they are just getting better drivers as well. Their ctr was on cup 2s, maybe actually one of the slowest car to get cup 2s. The difference in lap time between a 2003 evo and say a 2003 vette or 2003 911 is smaller than the difference between the lap time for a ctr and say a 2023 911 or vette. Maybe its just that sports cars were particularly bad in the early aughts.

Si being limited to a sedan rules out the perks of a hatch, and Toyota... well, we can tell that there's no inbetween the XSE and GR, and they're leagues apart. Sadly the still-pricey Integra is as close to a hot-hatch as Honda Corporation is giving us, and it's still the same problem I have with the Mazda3, Corolla, and Civic: they're basically fastbacks. The GTi is a proper squared off shape without the roof cascading down on bulky items. Apart from that and a Mini Clubman (a regular Mini really seems too small inside for much practicality in that regard), that's the problem with hatches these days.

Can confirm the crazy markups. Went into my local Honda in SF to try and order the FL5 Type R and they quoted $64,999 before tax, title, and registration ($20k markup over MSRP). Had the exact same experience with the FK8. After I failed to get an FK8, I traded my Accord for a Golf R (Got one for $3k UNDER MSRP from Mission Bay VW) and since then bought/sold 3 other new cars from VW. The Type R was my dream car since I was young but the dealer experience killed my interest and my loyalty to the brand.

Went to go look at what seemed to be the only mk8 Golf R in Chicago last year and it was also $20k over MSRP...which was also exactly how much they would give me for my Mk7 GTI as a trade in. Ridiculous
Great review! I’m surprised you guys didn’t mention one of the most endearing, amazing and downright necessary parts of the GR Corolla. The mechanical handbrake. It adds another level of fun that the other two cars can’t access. In the snow, in the wet, in the gravel and in the dry if your mad. A good one can be found around 25k for those that don't want the harsher ride of the STi which is also at great value around 30k used. I love the AWD sport compact segment and was really excited about the GR Corolla when I heard about it, but immediately moved on when I heard the price (Edit: just looked at a core with performance (both diffs) and cold weather package, it's 37.5k which actually isn't as bad as I thought). Great review - and I think that my take is that the traditional hot hatch is dead. As the average car now costs $50K, these models are actually a lot of car for the money. These cars each offer something different that can appeal to a wide audience of drivers. As a 2022 Golf R owner I have no interest in the GR Corolla, but am curious about the Type-R, my take from the test is that I bought the best car for my needs and I have been delighted with my car. The spec.and performance of the Golf R is amazing and I enjoy the tech. A similarly equipped S3 would cost approx. $10K more and lack the new AWD system fitted to the R and the RS 3. As both testers pointed out the engineers of each company put a lot of work into each model and what you have is a truly high performance cars that appeal to a wide audience. I like each of them, but would always go with the Golf R for my own personal reasons!
Great video!
Awesome video and Comparison! Have my name second in line on circuit edition(fingers crossed) but am very up for one of the 3. Did not think the civic was that awesome until i watched this. excellent and very informative video on the 3 rivals!
Golf R with DSG and APR Plus tune is my choice all day. But I’m 35 and can’t see myself in a civic or Corolla. Maybe if I was 25 still… but couldn’t afford any at that age.

Great great comparison review
Right now, in Germany, you can go and buy a brand new Type R. They have it in stock. For 69900 euros, that's 76300 USD or 102700 Canadian dollars. Crazy.
I bought a used GS F for the price that these are selling for new. Couldn't be happier other than the lack of a manual transmission.

@@AXELBONNAIRE I've owned 4 other Lexus sedans in the past. The GS F is by far the most fun packaged into an everyday sedan I've ever owned. I absolutely love it. Make sure you somehow pick up a used one. I promise you won't regret it...... unless you try to drive it in the snow like I did. It's worthless in the snow as to be expected.
Bravo!!! What a spectacular review. Best one yet. I'm on the waiting list for a GR Circuit edition. 1st in line at my local dealer.
i had a corolla 1992, i had it till last year and quality and driving exprience with that car was really amazing, i can feel how enjoyable can be this new gr corolla
It’s been more than 20 years since TOYOTA did something special, and coming from a line of BMWs i must say well done TOYOTA, I actually own a Yaris GR rally now😁😁
Fantastic video guys. I agree about the type r - I drove it and I really RESPECTED it, but because its limits are so high it felt rather boring in most situations

In everyday driving "Going 'fast' in a slow car" is more enjoyable for many vs "going slow in a fast car" because it captures the essence of the driving experience that draws us to cars and driving to begin with. My 2 cents
Great job!
100% agree with the CTR assessment. Owned one for four years. Loved driving it, tracking it (on cool days), etc. But something was missing. And that something was giggle-inducing fun. It's FWD driving perfection, but it rarely made me laugh out loud. I now have a new non-1LE Camaro 1SS. I laugh often. And get around a track faster, especially on a warm day. Impractical and hard to see out of in some ways, but holy hell is it fun.
would be thrilled to have any of these vehicles as my new daily but not paying $40-50k for them. subaru dealer near me has a half dozen WRX's you can pickup same day below sticker at sub 30k. they're probably getting my money.
The longest wheelbase car is the lightest... I know what you guys are feeling. I have an RX-8 and a 300zx. The RX-8 is 200 lb lighter but has a longer wheelbase. Directly off center, when you first start to make the car change direction, the RX-8 feels the most nimble, because it has the least resistance to changing it's direction of motion. But paradoxically, on a switchback, the 300zx feels more nimble, because you've brought the speed down a bit so the momentum trying to keep you moving in the same direction is lessened. This means the dominant factor affecting a sense of nimbleness becomes the rotation of the car; its willingness - not to change the direction in which it is moving - but the direction in which it is pointing. And the shorter wheelbase 300zx feels substantially more nimble in aggressive, tight corners.

Great video! I drove my GR Corolla in those roads and what a blast 🔥 what a car for twisty roads 😮💨 so fun!
Great video! I’d go with the GR Corolla not just for the looks, AWD & power but very much for the reliability. I’ve got a Lexus RC F & I pound on it w/o issue.
All of these cars should be about 6k cheaper. The CPI inflation states 40k today has the same buying power as 34k pre covid march 2020.

Actually by this measure, the VW isn't too bad. 2019, the last model year that the Mk7 Golf R was sold you could climb into one for a now inflation adjusted ~$49.5k. Given the ~$44.7k MSRP of the 2023 R, VW is pricing well below current inflation rates. Type R on the other hand (also baselining 2019) would be ~$44.5k in today's dollars compared to an actual 2023 MSRP of ~$44.7k. So you're being screwed there a bit more, but no worse than just about everything else nowadays. Besides in my eyes, the biggest issue isn't inflation, it's the obscene dealer markups.
Just checked out a gr going for 15k over ticket like 30 minutes ago lol look so sick in person tho way better than the photos/vids

Great video. Each of these cars have mark ups and are over 50k in SoCal. I absolutely love my Manual Veloster N. For $33.7k it’s an amazing car and happy to drive it. It’s everything I love in a hot hatch. Affordable, practical and gives you everything you need. Ridiculously great exhaust tone, multiple personalities can be calm and can be so fun and crazy.

Sat in this new type R at the Chicago Auto Show and the interior is basically perfect. Simple, straightforward, & covered in nice quality materials/red suede/red carpet etc. It has great seats, great gauges/infotainment, real hvac buttons and nothing more. And I can admit all that as a die hard GM/Vette/Camaro/Cadillac guy.👍
If the pricing was identical, I'd probably go with the Type R....the issue is that the Core model of the GR is the same car for $4-5k less with all three options including the LSDs. The only difference between the Circuit and Core is then cosmetic (roof, wing, hood, seat coverings - seats are the same). After visiting multiple dealerships, I can found GRs for close to MSRP ($1k or so required accessories) while the Type Rs were in the $10k ADM/accessory range making the difference in price $13-14k. I loved driving the Type R, but I'm buying the GR.
