City States and Civilisations - History Of Africa with Zeinab Badawi [Episode 11]

In this episode, we see how city states and kingdoms gave rise to rich and diverse civilisations, including some of the most iconic works of art on the continent: the Benin bronzes, dating back to the 13th century.
Zeinab Badawi travels to Nigeria where she is granted a rare interview with the King of the Benin kingdom in southern Nigeria. She meets the Queen Mother of Lagos, at her ancestral palace on Lagos Island where she relates the history of the Yoruba people.
And Zeinab also has an audience with the former governor of Nigeria’s central bank who became the Emir of Kano, one of northern Nigeria’s Muslim city states.

Utter nonsense. Obas of Benin = Agent of developmental retrogression, occultic confusion and perverse patriarchy. The Oba of Benin is an outdated, lawless and pagan man who does no useful work except to dress up in ridiculous clothes in the day and sleep with a harem of low-class women in the night. His harem even includes two sisters and in this modern days he does dog sacrifice and keeps slaves. Triple shame on educated Edos for wasting energy on an antiquated institution which will soon be consigned to the dustbin of history where it belongs!

Very many similarities with those in early East Africa in terms of States/kingdoms, Justice system, education and commerce. It is very unjust that many of the early history told/recorded in the European's point of view depict Africa as having been a place of lawlessness, primitiveness and disorder. The beautiful true history is slowly emerging. I hope to visit this hallowed land one day inshallah.

@@pejuodunlami238 yoruba people may say "every 5 5 days" because we count the first day twice. like if it's Monday and you are talking about next week Monday you might call it "8 days from now", because you are already counting this Monday as day 1....making Sunday day 7, and next Monday would be day 8. But that's just a particular way of speaking/counting....it' doesn't mean a modern week actually has 8 days.

I'm not from nigeria but I study 10 african languages. In my studies I found that Nigeria's history is older than Egypts. Linguistically igbo and yoruba languages are old . Many igbo and yoruba words are found in. english,Hawaiian, amharic. Most of all the egyptian names of gods and goddesses originate in nigerian linguistics. African linguistics are very organized.

@Heru Behudety that's what I've been doing for the last 7 years. Trying to use african linguistics to unravel africas past. From my studies I recognized a commonality that is purely african. Linguistics is like a trail ,that is the best source of preserving oral history. Artifacts can only explain so much . But egyptologist are scared of touching African linguistics because they know it will only show an advanced system of languages in subsaharan africa. The main african languages that created kemetic languages are igbo,yoruban,zulu/shona/chichewa. Ethiopian languages are only made up of igbo words. What kemetic people did was preserve the oral history of africa to document the 300,000 years of african intellectual knowledge. Kemetic people relied only on african knowledge , that originated from the heavens . Linguistics can prove what pharaoh was from what tribe.

Kano, the ancient city, very unique in culture, hospitality and investment potentialities as it has the largest and oldest market in west Africa also the city is Nigerias` center of commerce. Zainab Badawi made me laugh hardly when she said i musn`t slip again when she was showing, touching and narrating admiringly about the ancient city wall. 30:28-30:59 even if it was deliberate, it honestly made me want to watch till the end. Seriously i enjoyed the part where Joke Silva, a Yoruba actress danced and was giving some explanations. She is so eloquent and lively. 22:48-23:35 The whole of Nigeria is interesting.
