Congo: A journey to the heart of Africa - BBC Africa

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a vast, mineral rich country the size of Western Europe.
Alastair Leithead takes an epic journey from the Atlantic Ocean to the far reaches of the Congo river to explore how history has shaped the Congo of today and uncover the lesser told stories of this beautiful, if troubled country.
In the largest rainforest outside of the Amazon he comes face to face with its gorillas and hunts with pygmies, he travels into the heart of the Ebola outbreak with United Nations peacekeepers, and explores the cobalt mines which will drive our electric cars of the future.

I know all the 54 independent African states have a story to tell including my home Kenya but Congo has the saddest story of all since Leopold's time. When you close your eyes to pray tonight please remember to pray for Mother Africa and her ever ailing heart, the Congo.

A major problem, not only in Congo, but throughout Africa, is the politicians who are corrupted to the core. Most of the development aid the West sends to Africa goes into the pockets of these politicians. As a result, the infrastructure will not develop, there will be no foreign investments etc. It's sad that the ordinary people are suffering from this problem. I am from India and am here in DRC for a short stay of 7 days. This is my first time in Africa. People here are so friendly. But the corruption is a real problem here... As soon as I landed in Lubumbashi International airport I went for immigration counter.. there was an officer checking my passport and Visa. He was asking for an printout of an Document which I had as a soft copy. But I was not having it. The officer asked me to come closer and asked me like "Give me Money". I started asking why should I give money(with a little louder tone) he started to change the topic. So corrupted. But other than that I loving my stay here.♥️

Once again, over and over, slick leaders of slick nation's, exploit the common citizens of nation's. I am Caucasian, I detest the attacks on Asians, and the plundering of black nation's and peoples. And that Leopold murderer-lesder sure plays the role of an oppressor, to a tee. Humanity is Free?...to choose outright sinfulness. Greed blinds. Lust blinds. Covertness blinds. And I am no saint, no scholar, no attorney, just disappointed on my journey. Peace and Grace to all who don't go out of their way to be cruel, stupidly cruel, shamelessly mean and greedy beyond a normal appetite for foods and land and money. I grew up not far from beni in the eastern part of Congo, and I remember teacher telling us that our country is the richest country in the world, we have almost every mineral you can name in the world , my family is not a poor family, but when I was looking how people suffused around us ,I just felt really bad , in the future I want to teach my children just to work and hustle, never count on the so called minerals, maybe GOD gave us this land but didn't give us the minerals inside it .

THEY ARE PLUNDERING ITS NATURAL RESOURCES: GOLD, DIAMONDS, COBALT ETC. UNTIL IT IS ALL GONE AND THEY WILL KILL ANYONE WHO LIVES THERE OR GETS IN THEIR WAY. YOU NEED TO SPEAK TO THE LEADERS. CRY OUT TO YOUR LEADERS AND TELL THEM YOU NO LONGER HAVE ACCESS TO THE CONGO. YOU HAVE TO LEAVE THIS COUNTRY IMMEDIATELY. NOW YOU HAVE INVITED THE CHINESE AND THEY WILL BE WORSE.

I remember when my Criminology professor recommended that I wrote my thesis on King Leopold of Belgium. I was shocked that I wasn’t taught about these things before. I guess it is a way to keep some people ignorant and myopic

Masha Zheleznov so who deems what “important to know” and so forth? You’re acting as if the education system provides individuals with the tools to properly analyze and deconstruct the various narratives.

Masha Zheleznov so what about the other aspects of the world? Most of my fellow classmates in Canada aren’t cognizant or knowledgeable of this. Most of them do not even know about the Starlight tours that happen in Canada against the Indigenous People so for you to say that is skewed to say the least. Unless you go out and search for these information you will not if ever see it in the news. Maybe, it is a way to deflect and negate the plights of others or it might be a coping mechanism for those in power 🤷🏽

Masha Zheleznov why isn’t the same due diligence taken and or given when educating people about the exploits of Christopher Columbus? Why is it that people are selective-as to should be taught? Thats the basic premise of my assertion. Why?

Masha Zheleznov I like how optimistic and positive you’re and that in itself is an aspect of privilege which is not offered to a lot of people. As such you can look at the glass as half full whilst many see the latter.

From Wikipedia Bandar Tun Razak was once a very small town in Kuala Lumpur in the 1970s, previously known as Kampung Konggo (or Congo Village). It was named Kampung Konggo as this area was a settlement for retired Malaysian army personnel who served in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 1960s under the United Nations. Some veterans still live in their modern houses built during the redevelopment of the area.
