BBC World Debate ⎜WHY POVERTY?

This Debate is part of a global event hosted by the BBC and 50 other broadcasters around the world. The debate explores the causes of and cures for the enduring problem of severe poverty which still affects many people in the world.
It was recorded in front of a live audience in Johannesburg earlier this year. On the panel are Tony Blair, former UK Prime Minister; Oby Ezekwesili from the Open Society Foundation, Africa and a former Nigerian government minister; Moeltesi Mbeki, South African author and Chair of SA Institute of International Affairs; and Vandana Shiva, Indian activist, environmentalist and scientist. Chaired by Zeinab Badawi.

Yes, I love her too, she pushed the British Prime Minister to say something that he probably didn't want to admit, that if the African people stopped selling their raw materials and owned the resources from raw material all the way to finished product they could negotiate full value of their goods and make all the profit selling on the world market instead of sending their raw materials off to be processed in Europe, If they cut off the colonial middleman they can make all the profit on the stock market.

Tony is making a very crucial point but because it touches the host country, it is being ignored. Poverty is a result of interactions of many sub-systems, thus to solve poverty one needs to be holistic, we have to understand the major system which was put in place during the clash between Moors and Europe.

Debates on poverty, unemployment, insecurity in the society, inequality, gender issues, educational issues etc. are so common in modern world, but the reality is that poverty, unemployment and other burning issues are getting increased on global scale, so talking is not enough, but we need a practical program to address these issues; it is unfortunate for humankind that people talk …talk…talk but no down-to-earth solutions.

We have to get to the root of the problem. The first has to do with the moral disposition of mankind. We need to stop talking politics and get back to what lies in the heart of man. Why does man feel he has the right to steal , kill and contribute to not only impoverishing his fellow man but also killing him? There are wars all over the world in the name of colonialism and imperialism. Man has the evil desire to control and invade his fellow man. Seizing his land and natural resources. If you look at this dilemma in a clear light you will see that poverty is evil, man is evil and this is the real reason for poverty. The next question is how does man reckon the evils that he himself perpetuates?

Really excellent debate. Actually we are very much busy in theoretical portion of the Economic of Poverty. We are calculating the different critical methods to describe the kinds and the dimension of the poverty. Moreover we are always talking about different rubbish methods to eradicate the poverty like: agro-processing industry, industrialization, globalization which have a significant effect to boost up the poverty. We need to concentrate into the job security and livelihood that would follow the thematic principle of Sustainable Development, need to strengthening the poor people with the power of sustainable livelihood in the multi-dimension way. We need to understand the ground reality of the development concern and promote the effective methods to eradicate the different dimension of poverty.

Before the fall of Somalia, it was not possible for a young man to have a family or a large party, but later he sought a young boy with the greatest man who wanted to take that man. It is one of the examples of male life in economic control and that it is not a mistake or misunderstandings for women and young women who have time to control the economy and what they do when they want to marry others. We have a good idea of what we want to say in this story. We want someone to write his name and his name, and it's a matter of Somali people again and we pray that it is not used for women, youth and economics, and what has caused the government system to change the system of government becomes a real system with ccd kenya by 15; 57pm

Africa's problem is the same as Trinidad and Tobago. Petroleum, gas and petrochemical sectors are very capital intensive employing a few people. To boot, you still have to import foreign expatriates so the money largely goes to the Government. Very interestng debate though!

yeah, 4 years later, this video is now 4 years old, poverty exists everywhere, and nobody has done fuck-all about it. tax the richest 5% of people 5% more of their income, give it to the poorest, and there will be no more poor people. the richest will still have 95% of their money, they will still be INCREDIBLY rich, and people will have food in their stomachs, and maybe then they will stop dying?

I'm not sure where you live so I will just base it on the US. The US provides foreign aid in the form of economic and military to the following nations: Afghanistan Israel Egypt Jordan West Bank/Gaza Ethiopia South Sudan Malawi Uganda South Africa Nigeria Russia Iraq Tanzania Mexico Congo (Kinshasa) Haiti Lebanon Somalia Zambia Sudan Following the corruption index many of these nations rate in the top 50 for corruption and poverty. Primarily the developing nations in Africa. So long as financial aid is provided to these nations the leaders will not see their people as their primary source of income (assets). This has the effect of stunting entrepreneurship and genuine development in the economy and quality of life for all.

No really, you need to understand why the women keep on saying the same example. Land is being taken from people. This happends exactly because of lack of educacion to defend their rights. Is not because they are poor its because the acces to educacion. A country that deprived their citizen from educacion and their populacion accept they cant complaint. Dont let your goverment to do that insted go to the street and demand your rights to educacion
