Thiago is ginger, and doesn't have a nickname, that's to indicate that he's come from zona sul (south zone) of Rio, those nicknames are children's nickname, they earn them as children, growing up together in the hood. Thiago wasn't raised in the city of god, he doesn't need to be there, he had other choices, but ends up there because of his addiction. Benny knows from one look at him that he's a playboy. So he would have access to a mall in the upper class district of the city. You see, though Benny has a lot of money but he still doesn't have access to a mall in zona sul, because they'd call the cops on him if he was spotted shopping there. Even if he never stole anything, he would be seen as suspicious. That indicates that there was (in many ways, there still is) an unofficial appartheid in place in Rio de Janeiro, where people from de favelas are never allowed to visit the more famous scenerys of Rio, unless they are there to work on a subemployment situation (like Rocket as a paperboy).

The improvised pray before the war was an Idea from one of the actors who used to be part of a gang. He Said to the director they usually prayed before a combat so the director asked him to lead the prayer during the shooting.

Weird that you guys saw Tuba's death as a dark comedy relief. To me, that scene was VERY impactful. It shows how much disregard Zé Pequeno (Lil'Z) has for life. He just casually kills one of his righ arm mans just because he was annoying him. Also, you guys should check Elite Squad (1 and 2) and Bingo.

Well, Tuba went and kept talking about the guy who just sent them running to Zé Pequeno, of all people. He should've known what would happen, since he worked for him for some time

Not to mention, Bené (Benny) was basically the one who kept Zé in check. After he died, Zé Pequeno went full evil

Knock out Ned is played by Seu Jorge, who went on to feature in The Life Aquatic and provide much of the soundtrack of Portuguese covers of David Bowie. My buddy's uncle recommended it to him and we watched a bootleg copy way back in the early 2000s. First foreign language film I ever saw and definitively one of my favourite films. It's so immersive that there doesn't feel like there's a language barrier at all.

Curiosity: The opening song of your video is by Seu Jorge, who plays the role of Ned. He's a fantastic artist who used to be a homeless pearson before he became famous. I recomend to listen the song made by him called Burguesinha. He actually was in a Bill Murray movie and made brazilian versions of David Bowie's songs.

There's an intersting sub layer to this story: this movie is mostly set in the 60's and 70's when brazil was a military dictatorship and the brazillian government actually sent miltary/police death squads into the slums of cities like Sao Paulo and Rio and let them slaughter people en masse in order to try and control the crime in those places. There was one Rio police officer who was later convicted of 27 murders and was sentenced to 350 years.

Hammerhead547 Yes, I'm brazilian and my fathers lived the mess that dictatorship was. Many repressions ocurred in that time, and journalists and television companies worked with the government to cover up huge atrocities and scandals commited by the police force, ministry of interior defense and the army Intel detachment. Many artists and people who were against the changes taken on the constituition and the repressions were deported off country. This movie encapsulates this background very well.

@@TheTarikLI am also Brazilian and I was 9 years old when that coup d'état took place. Many innocent people were killed by the army and the police. In addition to being cowardly and corrupt, the members of the police who killed suspected criminals were racist. I feel a lot of anger when people who call themselves good citizens try to defend the military dictatorship and the coup plotters who helped make 1964 the beginning of 20 years of truculence, ignorance, incompetence and cowardice.

Awesome movie and review. Nice job guys. I also recommend Elite Squad 1 (Golden Bear winner in Berlim) and 2, with Wagner Moura (the Pablo Escobar from Narcos). Its the other side of the story: the brazilian police point of view - and the government corruption in the sequel. Best regards.

thanks for the review. a funny fact most people overlook, is that the name of Knockout Ned in portuguese is "Mané Galinha", which means something like man-chicken (i think i dont speak portugues myself).. anyways, this to me, makes the intro that bit better

Amazing review, I'm brazilian and have watched this a hundred times, but I never had noticed that idea of he losing "protection" when he raped that girl while he was wearing that neckace, thanks for the insight. This is the greatest movie from Brazil, one of the best ever made. Fun fact, the inprovised scene of the prayer, the hoodlums are saying it all wrong, instead of saying they'll do as god's will they're acctually saying they'll do what is their own will and desire, they saying it wrong obviously cause they don't go to a church. in Brazil praying when something inportant is about to happen is a cultural thing, even before a soccer game the players often make a circle and pray.

Me too, and to add to his perception the neckless that was given to him is actually from a religion originated in Africa, that came to Brazil when the first slaves arrived. This religion is still relevant until today, people earn their neckless and while wearing you can’t do some things, that’s depending on which neckless your wearing. The religion is Umbanda or Candomble

The film definitely touches on a lot of interesting themes in regards of humanity. Have human beings evolved beyond the need for their primal instincts, or are human beings not so different from wild animals if they’re stripped away of any societal safety net and have to rely on their primal instincts to survive in a dog-eat-dog world. It’s an interesting decision that the film never shows any of the kid’s parents. It perfectly highlights the very dangerous environment these kids have to live in where it’s every man for himself.

19:25 there's an interview with real life Carrot (now he's clean and condemns drug dealing and his past life), and while he was speaking, gunshots started popping. Unless we have a real shift on the entire political system (because many politicians are getting richer by drug dealing), nothing will really change in Rio and São Paulo. As a matter of fact, it's only getting worse and more violent.

See a doc called ''City of God, 10 years'', about the actors , 10 years later, many of then are no more actors, they lived and still live on favelas and many of them are in poor financial condition , city of god is not just a gangster movie, its a film about the social condicion, and this facts about the actors, at present time, prove it. The caracters are eternal, but the actors, many of then just did this movie or few works

If you like this movie, I also recommend the Elite Squad (Tropa de Elite) movies. They explore more crime on the police's perspective of Rio de Janeiro, told similarly like City of God. I think the same screenwriter is involved in these movies.

While there is need for people that do the "dirty job" and illegal activities, there will be crime in the most fragile and unstable parts of society. If you are a powerful person you go to desperate people, both to do crime or to work for you like a slave.
