Citroen C3 - Should You Buy One in 2022?

Citroen's third generation C3 supermini gets a wash 'n brush-up here, with a slightly smarter looks, comfier seats and extra personalisation options. It's still one of the most comfort-orientated small cars you can buy too. Ultimately, there's nothing really revolutionary on offer here, but as a complete and highly personalisable package, it's desirably different.
Market and Model
Pricing is a little higher than it used to be because Citroen no longer offers entry-level 'Touch' trim in our market. That means a price range which now spans the £15,000 to £21,000 bracket. There's a choice of four trim levels - 'Sense', 'Shine', 'C-Series' and 'Shine Plus'. Potential buyers will need to make sure that they leave some budget aside for personalisation. Thanks to changes made to the way that you can specify this revised model, this is now the most customisable supermini in its segment, with the number of visual spec combinations increasing from 36 to 97. This includes fresh body colours and bi-tone choices (incorporating the roof, door mirrors and the rear quarter panel trim), plus new coloured inserts around the fog lights and the Airbump panels, as well as new graphic trims decorating the roof for a more distinctive pavement presentation. There are seven body colours, four 'Colour Packs' and three roof decor options, plus you can now specify bigger 17-inch 'Vector' alloy wheels. Inside, there's now the option of a 'Techwood ambiance' pack with 'lightwood' trim, soft-touch materials and special stitching.
Equipment levels remain pretty generous. Even base 'Sense' trim gets you Airbump panels, LED headlights, a seven-inch capacitive touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic air conditioning, six airbags, lane departure warning, speed sign recognition, coffee break alert and power folding door mirrors. Plus there are some really clever optional touches. Of these, our favourite is the 'ConnectedCAM Citroen' system. Here, you get a forward-facing two-megapixel, GPS-enabled camera mounted in the rear-view mirror. It's there for two reasons; sensibility and fun. The 'sense' bit lies in its capability to record any traffic incidents or accidents, since it activates in an impact and stores the preceding 30 seconds and following 60 seconds. However, there's a fun purpose too, given that the driver can also click a button to safely take exterior photos or videos of the view through the windscreen and then share this content through social networks.
Summary
As superminis go, this improved C3 isn't an orthodox choice, but then that's part of its appeal. In time honoured Citroen fashion, a C3 is just that little bit different, with smart, slightly quirky looks and some fun aesthetic options if you want them. Of course, there'll be lots of people who just won't get what this car is trying to be. After all, there isn't really any need for Crossover cues on supermini. You can probably survive a trip to the supermarket without the protection of Airbump side panels. And will your friends really want 'ConnectedCAM' pictures of your journey to the gym on their Twitter feeds? Probably not. If you're tempted to take this perspective, then you'd probably be better off considering another contender in this class, a supermini that might well be better to drive and more spacious inside than this one. But also a car that might well feel bland and boring after experience with this Citroen.
All of which leaves us.. Well where? From an objective point of view, this C3 isn't the best car in the class. Subjectively, though, you could easily argue that there's nothing in this segment to touch it. It all depends on how you view the automotive world. We think this C3 makes it a brighter place.

Absolutely YES YES, I LOVE THIS CAR, yes, THE BEST CAR IN THE UNIVERSE🤣🤣🤣🤣 I don't care it has next to nothing safety features, 4 stars ANCAP rating, high retail price, and yes, I love this car edit: respect freedom of speech, don't delete my post
Spot on review - as ever - even 9 months later when I'm watching this. Thank the Gods ('if you have one' as Dave Allen used to say) for Citroën, who are getting their individuality back. Cars for people who can think for themselves, don't act like sheep and want something that is refreshing, individual and darned good.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply I have one, just coming up to 12 months completely trouble free motoring. No teething problems, no squeaks or rattles just good stuff. I’m in Ireland so probably couldn’t avail of your services. Out in the country where I am the roads are quite ‘basic’ sometimes and this car has not been phased by them at all. Great on the motorway too. I have a 2021, pre facelift, 110 turbo, 6 speed. Much better than it should be😀 By the way, I moved over here in 2008 having lived in Horsham for 23 years; I recognise the scenery in the tests! Great reviews.
At last a reviewer who realises that we don’t all throw our cars around like racing drivers.

Need a new car as my big old vectra is starting to fail. Mostly looked at sporty cars but really love the styling and that it focus on comfort as I mostly drive on highways to work at 100km/h. So yeah might get a C3 as my new daily as I will still have my more sporty hobby car for those sunday drives 🙂 Thanks for a great review!

Does this have pop out windows in the back?
Citroen advertise the C3 for £12995 OTR, undercutting the Fiesta by £4500 - £6500, I would be prepared to overlook certain "problems" to save such money, provided of course the C3 is a reliable car to own and drive in daily use

I have had three of these starting with the base model and the best. The 3 cylinder 82hp engine is rough and struggled on hills. The 100hp engine with turbo is best but not economic and you have to buy a top spec for the turbo. It’s good on rough roads as you would expect from a Citroen. The plastic interior and touch screen are awful and it’s not very roomy. Best as a pensioners (I am one) runabout if you don’t waste money and buy the base model that doesn’t have the Fisher Price touchscreen. I thought the base model rode better on the skinnier tyres which are cheaper to replace. I always used super unleaded. The diesel is excellent but again it’s only available in overpriced high spec.
I had a C3 1.2 82bhp courtesy car in 2019.

@OsvUkVehicleSupply It was good at 50mph but still quite noisy . In town it sometimes sounded like a 2CV under acceleration & it also had a high biting point.
Not a bad car really and 60 mpg is a big plus with fuel at nearly £2 a litre . So good cheap run about car with good spec . Dont know if they are reliable ?

Absolutely not! Had to endure one of these for an entire weekend back in 2018 whilst we were waiting for delivery of a brand new Golf. Brand new it was, had 40 odd miles on but you could be forgiven for thinking it had 100k the gearbox was that bad. Really notchy with such a long throw. Vague steering. Loads of bodyroll. Cheap interior with an abysmal infotainment system. Also felt like I was sat on it rather than in it. Such a strange thing to drive. Out of the hundreds of cars I've driven in my life so far this is right up there as one of the worst.

Weird how opinions differ. I had one as a courtesy car and I thought I was fantastic and I'm considering one as it's one of the few cars I can afford to buy brand new for cash.
i would rather buy this because i saw this c3 pulled a GODDAM 13,000 TON BOAT IN WATER.
I own one and find it offensive you calling it a super mini its not mini and its not super at 110 hp fuel efficiency is absolute bolloks and fuel tank is tiny I live the car but can't wait for it to be gone

Had this for a week as a rental in Spain for the second year in a row. This time it came straight out the factory. Sloppy gearbox, noisy engine, drives like a elephant, horrible Infotainment system, unstable over 140 km/h, terrible build quality, everything you see and touch is just pure plastic. Plastic bumpers at the back is very loose. In total, it's a dreadful car

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply no, I have a Volkswagen Arteon. I only had the C3 Aircross as a rental car and really was disappointed. For a starting price of 21.000 you expect more.

Anyone who enjoys a sharp driving car with great handling would never ever buy one of these things. Gearbox like stirring porridge and handling that borderlines dangerous. Dreadful car

That's probably true. This vehicle isn't aimed at those people... There's plenty of cars that are, but this one isn't. TBH it's like someone sat Citroen down, opened a bottle of Merlot and a photo album and had a long, nostalgic talk that reminded them who they are.

Got to say I test drove one and wondered why all the negativity. Plush inside, steering/ gearbox as good as expected and for real world driving it handles and accelerates as well as the average person needs. I bought one and I'm happy.

C3 is best lookin super mini to me. And if that is so comfy to ride what all experts say, so i would defently by one if i neaded new car.
