Citizens of Humanity - Rickson Gracie

Rickson Gracie's participation in this video is in support of the Rockson Gracie Foundation. The Rockson Gracie Foundation was created in 2011, in memory of Rockson, grandson of Helio Gracie, the founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Rockson, a champion like his father, Rickson, was a beloved member of a pioneering family. The non-profit organization honors Rockson by bringing Jiu-Jitsu to disadvantaged boys and girls.
The mission of the Foundation is to reach youngsters who will benefit most from the Jiu-Jitsu way of life: inner city kids tempted by the allure of gangs and drugs, who, by taking another path, will gain self-esteem through the structured martial arts environment.
Jiu-Jitsu translates from Japenese to the "Gentle Art," because it uses technique and leverage rather than violence and strength. As students climb the ranks, they carry the "gentle art" philosophy outside of the dojo, internalizing the poise and control necessary to face life's challenges head on.
By offering after school programs and training scholarships, the Rockson Gracie Foundation helps underprivileged kids find sanctuary in their Jiu-Jitsu academy: a life long community where students grow to become teachers and role models for future generations.

Funaki, a guy who defeated Bas Rutten, Frank Shamrock, Guy Mezger, Ken Shamrock, and Yuki Kondo. It's important to remember that modern MMA wasn't even in existence when Rickson was in his 20s/30s. The closest thing was vale tudo in Japan and Rickson dominated two tournaments there. And I think he was pushing 40 at the time.

He never beat any top champions. The only reason he didn't fight Sakarauba was because his son Rockson was found dead in New York. And he retired after that

Rorion didn't want to choose RIckson because Rickson would've wiped the floor with his opponents and it wouldn't have been impressive because Rickson is big, strong, and looks intimidating.. whereas Royce was much smaller than the other fighters. This is word for word what Rorion has said.

In fact, Royce never had an BJJ medal in a competition before UFC.. he actually never fought on street and was skinny and small.. But Royce listen to grandmaster Helio and become the champion.

i think if rickson wanted to put a rock down in pieces he would do it.. he never said he is the greatest of all time, and the fighters were not crap, bad bjj defense, was the struggle of his oponents, but rickson has to be seen not only as fighter more then a philosopher and insiring guy who loves to do what he does, in peace with him, thats important too.. peace

Yes i am sure.In a submission rules torny he would have beaten the lot of them but in a mma match he would have been knocked out sooner or later. He took one good knee from Takada i think it was and by the look on his face he knew it was time to get out.

Don't get me wrong i admire Rickson greatly but he has done a brilliant job of keeping the legend alive. He was winning mma when the other fighters were crap.I would believe all the hype if he had fought in say UFC 9 or ten something like that and faced the likes of Coleman, Frye etc.I don't think he would have handled big wrestlers who could strike well.I think he would have struggled against Tank Abbot.Ricksons stand up was terrible Cro Cop and Fedorwould have battered him around the ring.
