I have my grandfather’s original 1878 Colt 10-gauge. It’s a lot easier opening and closing than the one you are shooting. I love the old gooseneck hammers and the old-style look. I’d love owning one of the new ones!

I have my grandfather’s original Colt 1878 in 10 gauge. It looks fairly similar but it has a lot more drop in the stock. Also it doesn’t have a rib extension for lockup. I would love to own the Cimmaron copy. I love the doubles and will always love the style, the way it points and handles. Great old guns!

Really enjoyed the video as I've been thinking about getting a 12 gauge coach gun for a while. Your gun is a beauty, it has a lot of character to it. I'll look into this model.

I happen to have two original Colt 1878s. One 12 gauge and one 10 gauge. I also recently came across a Cimarron 1878 with 26" barrels at a local gun shop and traded for it. It is MUCH easier to open and close than the one in your video. I do Cowboy Action Shooting and have three buddies that have the 20" model. They handled the 26" gun I have and said it was built much better out of the box than their's. The wood even looks better on the gun I have. Also, the 26" gun must have lighter barrel as it doesn't feel as heavy as their 20" guns. Everyone felt that it pointed (balanced) better.

I hope you will forgive my returning to this video, but I had to after talking to one of cousins recently about a "Back when we were young" event that occurred when some yahoos thought it would be a good idea to try and steal some our families (our farms were fairly close together and cattle were a cash crop for us) . The yahoos in question had stolen any number of head from other farmers in the area and had worked their way into our area, so, thanks to common sense and some "suggestions" provided by Sheriff's Deputies and State Troopers (Country Boys themselves as a general rule at the time) we went to bed early as usual....But with our shotguns (mostly double barrels) and deer rifles (mostly Winchester 94s) close to hand while keeping one eye and both ears open for the sound of barking and/or howling yard dogs (bread eaters as they were known back then). One night the yahoos took a notion to try and steal cows from our pastures....That did not work out well for them as us Country Boys and Girls grabbed our shotguns, rifles and a revolvers and opened fire.....It was a serious case of cross fire.....00 buck and 150 and 175grn .30-30 rounds and more than a few .38 Special "balls" were directed at their trucks and trailers.....And more than a few hit home.....The next day the County Sheriff and some of his more senior deputies made the rounds and congratulated us for helping his Deputies "identify" the trucks and trailers involved. Since both trucks and their respective trailers were basically riddled with buck shot, rifle and revolver balls they kinda of stood out on the road from those owned and operated by honest folks. No cows OR humans were stolen or injured (not for lack of tryin' when it came to the humans) in the above incident but my cousin and I nearly hurt ourselves laughing about how the next day our Dads and Grandads kept complaining about "earin' back those mule ears" on their 12, 20, and 16 gauge shotguns and "lettin' loose with both barrels at them damn cow thieves." Their shoulders and/or ribs hurt them a mite.... All six men involved were shortly arrested and spent time in the state pen for stealing and attempting to steal cattle despite their defense lawyers whinnin' and complainin' about their clients gettin' shot at "from all directions" over in the Sturgis Road Community.....It was a simpler and more justifiable time....

Both barrels at once is 'giving it to them w both barrels'.. and is another option in firing this shotgun. Sometimes, two are better than one. Excellent for home protection. Would love to own a couple of these babies.

I bought one and had to do a bunch of work to get it to dump the empties and it is very heavy. I sold mine and started using an old American Gun Co. of New York in 20GA hammer shotgun. I did like the hammers on the Cimarron 1878 they were smooth and easy to cock. My dad had a real Colt 1878 as well as a Remington 1889 with long barrels I used to hunt with for years and they were not as heavy as these reproductions.

I have several reproduction 1800's shotguns - they do not like the steel base shells like you are using in the video - they all stick or jam on occasion with steel - no problems with brass base shells. That is in doubles, lever and pump of pre-1900 design.

Today I finally got to try mine. Unfortunately I had the same problem as you, only it was the Remington Heavy Dove and the Federal Game Load that wouldn't open without the knee trick. (I didn't have any of the lighter load Federals to try.) Estate game loads shot fine except for two. I also shot a box of shells I loaded with Black Powder, various powder charges from 40 to 75 grains, and they all opened and extracted just fine, even though they were various brands of brass including Federal. These hulls had been shot through my Stoeger Coach Gun prior to reloading. Interestingly, the hulls that were difficult to open in the 1878 also wouldn't even close in the Stoeger, but empty hulls that had been shot in the Stoeger could be loaded and extracted in the 1878 just fine.

I was considering a stoeger but man I have to say I really like the looks the hammers on the outside and to be honest the safety factor is more appealing than the hammer less coach guns as well. I might just have to reconsider and get this one instead

Duke I've watched all your Cimarron 1878 videos and you convinced me I had to have one. I found a used one in excellent shape for a not-too-bad Covid 19 era price. It should be here tomorrow. I'm interested in how mine will react to those same ammo choices as yours. I had similar issues with my Stoeger Coach Gun, but only with reloads. It was sticking just until the extractor reaches full extension.

@@DukeFrazierProductions Mine is actually a TTN, made shortly before the owner of the company sold it to EMF and Cimarron took over the 1878. The gun's owner is an old timer that used it in SASS matches a couple times, then retired it in his safe for several years. It has the lightened competition springs and looks like excellent condition.

While I've never owned a Cimarron product I have fired and/or handled several that are/were owned by friends of mine. The single aggravatin' thing every one of them had in common (especially the shotguns and rifles/carbines) was how stiff and gritty they were out of the box, and even after a few hundred rounds had been fired through them. It's for those reasons that I have not purchased ANYTHING from Cimarron! I simply refuse to pay the price(s) that are on the tags or MSRP especially since I know that I am only going to have to take my firearm to a qualified gunsmith to make them work the way they SHOULD have worked from the factory/assembly line. I want a "mule ear" double barrel shotgun....Just not one from Cimarron and that's why I'm keeping a close watch on the local pawn shops and gun stores for a used, and yes older of course, "mule ear" 12 gauge shotgun. I only discovered your channel this morning and am working my way through your videos, all of which I think are excellent by the way, and subscribed as soon as I saw that you had covered the 1858 Remington revolver. Take care and keep up the excellent work you do.
