I love how frayed the toys look. They were so absolutely loved and that is why they look like that. I'm guessing Channel Awesome staff that were involved in reviewing this movie don't have any of their childhood stuffed animals. Being frayed and worn is not ugly...it's a show of how much they were loved.

And if you had more functional brain cells than the piss poor ones you’re working with he already explained what he assumed the intent was given the context of the film. Completely agree. I loved that they looked old and worn, because that was clearly the intention, plus they still looked like real stuffed animals. It hit home how Christopher Robin had grown up, and how the characters were being worn down through time, as was Christopher Robin himself. Nothing in this film felt forced or manipulative to me, and I found it to be a really nice reflection of childhood memories and a wonderful story about the innocence we lose when we leave our childhood behind.

I'm coming to the realization that Doug (at least of late) rarely allows a film to simply work on him on an emotional level. He's constantly over-intellectualizing the moviegoing experience. You can say "But isn't that the job of a critic?" Yes and no. Sometimes a film is intended to work on a cerebral level and sometimes it is supposed to work on an emotional level, but you need to ALLOW it to work on you. The plot of "Christopher Robin" is standard. You can absolutely nitpick it and say "It has been done countless times” and that statement is absolutely true, and yet on an emotional level it works, again, if you let it. There's something simple, pure and affecting about hearing Jim Cummings voice come out of a realistic looking doll (done in the original Pooh design, not the Disney-fied design). It is nostalgic in the truest sense of the word. It is a reminder of being a child. Even though it was a different voice (Brad Garrett is honestly perfect) seeing Eeyore smile and say "Christopher Robin is playing" brought me to tears. It was such a simple moment but powerful. The message of "Christopher Robin" is familiar, but as is so often the case, it is how the story is told that matters, and this film does the message of staying connected to your inner child, remembering to play and balancing work with family just about as good as any movie.

Alec Kerr True. But if my job was to analyse and nitpick a film to death, I’d probably end up doing that to regular movies too. It can be hard to “untrain” the mind during your down time. Like how Lawyers are constantly in argumentative mode even when at home. It’s kind of how the mind works, I guess. Doug spends so long nitpicking movies he probably does it unconsciously at this point.

I've been noticing that too. For me i think the movie is a love letter to those who either grew up with the earlier animated movies starring Pooh or for those who read the books. Either way the film satisfied me in a way that i haven't seen a movie do since Toy Story 3. This easily is one of the best live action movies Disney has done in a long time. 9.5/10 for me.

  • @AlecTheMovieGuy

    @AlecTheMovieGuy

jesus barrera What I was getting at is you sometimes need to let the magic of a film to work on you. A cliched plot is only truly noticeable when it is handled poorly. The Nostalgia Critic just did the Santa Claus 3 and that has the dad that works too hard trope, and it makes little sense for that film and is sort of redundant since it was already done in the first film. I’m not suggesting a bad film can become good if you simply ignore it’s obvious flaws, but that you can miss a good film if you get focused on the plot detail instead of the how the story is being told. “Christopher Robin” is a film that is meant to play to the heart not the brain. Any number of things can take you out of a movie. If you think the dolls are creepy that isn’t something you can really recover from. From the first trailer, I was hooked by their design, the execution and choice to go back to the original look of all the stuffed animals. I was ready to go on the journey and was thrilled by a film that was almost more for adults than children in terms of tone and themes. It was charming and endearing. Yes, I was innately aware the plot was a trope but the charm of the film melted the cynic in me. That’s what I mean by a allowing a film to work its magic on you.

Very well said. But when I first saw the teaser trailer back in March 2018, I was not given a single hint the troubled man was him. And yet I connected to his worrying 'What to do, what to do, what to do" thoughts. All it took was the very first word of "What to do indeed" The Split second Before the man turns around to see the source of the voice, I was thinking, "No, can it really be?" The Man turns around and sees an old friend. Me and the man: "Pooh?" Me In the split second between: Is it really you, Pooh? Pooh: Christopher Robin Me as the Title appears: The Man is Christopher Robin? CR: I've cracked Pooh: Oh I don't see any cracks. A few wrinkles, maybe. Me: It IS you, Pooh! And Christopher Robin! (Voice starts to crack) I don't believe it! You-you grew up. (Starts sobbing) Like me! I cried for at least a solid minute realizing how much I'm like CR in that moment of not knowing what to do. Some movies like this are meant to be more emotional than logical. So Doug overanalyzing a film like this makes his very disagreeable in my eyes And personally, due to Doug's recent hatred of Live Action Remakes, even though this one is not a remake, I don't really pay much attention to him anymore. Not as the Nostalgia Critic and not as himself. He can hate those movies all he wants but his gloating with his brother against films like Beauty and the Beast 2017 makes them come off as immature children who think their opinion is better than others and well as disrespecting the fans who found something to enjoy in the remake films. My point: Every film, even films with "objectively bad choices" has its fans and need to be treated with respect. Not scorn that makes the fans look like idiots for enjoying something they like

I could tell just how much respect the movie had for its source material, and upon seeing it in theaters, I fell in love with this movie. It was a very pleasant surprise for me, and instantly became one of my favourite live-action Disney movies of all time. So much care went into it, and I think this is a great example of how Disney should be revisiting its older material.

Oh cmon, Doug! I love the simplicity of WTP too but I also love when they doe go big, in fact seems even more legit because it’s something rare. Have you ever seen the stuffed animals from the 30s? They look pretty much like this, witch make sense for the movie. The fact that they are all kind of dirty even at the begging also makes sense, if you let stuffed animals “living” in a forest they would probably looks like this too. In the 80s show this guys played in puddle muds, swimming on the river and so far... About the cliches, yeah, it is cliche, but I think I find it pretty well executed.

I honestly think this one of if not the best "Live Action remake" from Disney. I say that loosely because they didn't just remake The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, it honestly feels like the continuation of that story. I cried when they dropped the trailer and when I saw the movie, so maybe it's nostalgia goggles but it honestly warmed my heart. And again this is a new story rather than a new telling of the original so I have to give it credit for being just that.

My friends and I love this movie, and I think it's because of the Christopher Robin portrayal. He's not just some stick in the mud adult drowning himself in his work; we see exactly why he's like that. He was sent away to boarding school, his father died when he was young, he went to WAR, so we can genuinely understand why he is the way he is, and I love that. It's a little cliche, sure, but the fact that it's done with a character we all know and love it has that relatability to it the most stories can't hit.

The voices were on point, the CG was very impressive, the acting is of course great, the writing was fitting and fun, there were so many callbacks that made people feel nostalgic, it brought back so many wonder memories to fans of the original cartoon, it’s just so good. The detail was great too, even the toys themselves looked weathered and dirty in the beginning of the main story, then looked all clean at the end, symbolizing the childhood joy returning. This is how you do a new-age movie on a classic tale. I’m looking at you Mary Poppins...

The problem with Mary Poppins Returns was that it tried to be too much like the original. Instead of building on what made the 1964 classic great it reused some scenes like the rooftop scene to a similar degree in my eyes. I think Mary Poppins Returns is a good movie at least when compared to Disney's other films in recent years, but it still has a lot holding it back from being great.

  • @TheReviewingNetwork

I really enjoyed the movie a lot, in terms of the Pooh movies, it's right up there with stuff like Many Adventures, Pooh's Grand Adventure, and the 2011 Winnie The Pooh film but I will admit there are some noticeable flaws primarily in the climax of the film and how Christopher Robin comes to solve his problem which when you hear what it is, I remember asking myself, "wait, nobody really thought about this idea before Robin said it?" As far as the rest of the film itself goes, I thought they did just enough by making it mature but not going overboard, like the scene where Christopher snaps at Pooh in the Hundred Acre Wood, it's harsh but it's not incredibly dark, it finds the right balance of how to take that scene in particular. The casting as a whole is well done for the most part especially by MacGregor and Cummings, the lessons they're trying to teach are very solid, the story while predictable is still very good, again never taking it overboard on certain aspects, the CG as a whole is good and I like the blending of the original A.A. Milne designs and the Disney designs to create the characters. It's a really solid movie and probably (if we're going to go down that route), the best of the live-action Disney adaptations they've done.

I really like when you get a little more serious. Your funny stuff is funny, but I like that you can get deep too. Good video man!

I remember watching this in the cinema and being annoyed over the cliches but still enjoying the movie overall. My favorite scene in the movie is when Christopher picks up Eeyore from the river while Eeyore continues being his old depressy self. I don’t know, it just felt like a fun scene.

This movie actually made me cry. I’m 20 now, and Disney’s Winnie the Pooh is what I associate the most with my childhood. It’s perfectly innocent and beautiful, just like the whole world was when I was a kid. So now, when I saw Christopher finally starting to have some fun with Pooh, and coming back to his childhood, I just couldn’t hold it in. Even the last shot of this video, where Christopher hugs Winnie, hits me right in my heart. This theme is very personal for me, and this movie gave me just what I needed. Sometimes I miss my childhood days so much, and this movie perfectly understands people who feels the same. And I’m not even that old yet

I like it!^^ Yes, we've seen this kind of story often, but it makes sense to do this with Winnie the Pooh, cause the end of the first Disney movie already goes in this direction. I also love how many times they reference the old movie. I just like how Pooh reacts to the real world and everything he says sounds pretty deep - but he's not intending to sound deep, he's just seeing things from the eyes of a child. For example, I love when Pooh says: "I know I don't need that balloon. But it makes me happy." I'm a sucker for these kind of stories. xD Yeah, it looks not that good, but I don't really care. Also, I didn't have a problem with the voices, since I watched the German dub and they had their original voice actors.

Say what you will about the reboots, this was an amazing film! It made me cry so much, Pooh and Paddington made my childhood haha this was such a poetic film - well as long as they're in the 100 Acre Wood it's fun

Incase you didn't know, and for what it's worth: this movie's forest scenes were filmed on location in Ashdown Forest - this is where the real Christopher Robin grew up with his toys. Although the vibrancy just can't compar to the cartoons, it's still pretty neat knowing they filmed this in the real 100 acre wood.

I liked this film. It was certainly better than most remakes. I liked Pooh in it and they seemed kind of cute. Also I see where the problems lie.

The only reason I watched this film was because Simon Farnaby was in it for 5 minutes (the scene with the taxi driver) lol

As someone who has a very close nostalgic connection to Winnie the Pooh; has just turned 18 and missing childhood; and has even had a heffalump plushie for 12 years now... you could say this film did a lot for me.
