Disney's Failed Next Big Thing: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Фильм және анимация

In the early 2010's Disney tried to recapture the magic of Pirates of the Caribbean by pumping out big budget blockbusters that went on to bomb at the box office. 2010's The Sorcerer's Apprentice is great example of this. In this video essay I examine what exactly went wrong, and offer some of my thoughts on the film.

The reason these movies flopped is cus the people who actually really enjoyed them (us) were children and weren’t the one’s making reviews or paying the money to see it unfortunately. Boomers are the ones that hated these movies. The Tesla Coil scene has stuck with me my whole life i thought it was amazing.

@@ashblossomandjoyoussprung.9917 Tbh I would count The Sorcerer's Apprentice as "Original" because the source material is like. A short film within a film with two characters. The 2010 movie script broadens the concept enough that I would put in the same shelf as Tomorrowland (which in itself is based on a Disney Park ride so). Could it be better? Yes obviously, but i'll take it anyway. Tbh I can't speak for TS4 as I stopped watching at TS3 because the idea of continuing the franchise just didn't speak to me (but then, I am also not the target audience for that one). I just wish if they were to explore within franchises that they actually gave us enough time to actually miss those franchises.

John Carter, Tron Legacy, Lone Ranger. I know these films bombed critically and financially but these films are way better then most of the blockbusters made today, at least Disney took somewhat of a risk with these films and also love the film look of late 2000s and early 2010s films before everything went all out Digital looking.

Tron Legacy pretty much got even in the box office, depending of the marketing costs. It MAY have even made some money for Disney on it's theatrical run. Even if i have some issues with John Carter, because i am a lifelong Edgar Rice Burroughs fan, that movie's bombing was a shame. Lone Ranger however was crap...Disney's cash grab to make Pirates of the Caribbean in the West with Verbinski and Depp was dull and unfunny...total charisma black hole Armie Hammer destroying The Lone Ranger character with his idiot antics was just the tip of the iceberg of failure.

simple. they broke the first rule of urban fantasy genre: DON'T REVEAL TOO MUCH-- IF ANYTHING-- AT THE BEGINNING. The viewer is supposed to experience what the viewpoint protagonist is experiencing:a mysterious new world unfolding, piece by piece, in the middle of the mundane. in the Sorcerer's Apprentice, they literally revealed the ENTIRE PLOT AND BACKSTORY right in the first thirty seconds. As a voiceover. By Nicolas Cage.

Honestly, this really deserved more love. I loved it as a kid and still do now really. It's not a masterpiece of cinema but it still works. The worldbuilding/magic/etc. is incredibly fun and it's endlessly quotable for me. I will also say the three main leads (Balthazar, Dave, and Horvath) are played to perfection. Really every actor understood the assignment on this one. Absolutely underrated movie that's perfect for an easy, good, fun night.

The thing about being a flop is that you don't get to decide that, it refers to whether or not it made money during the run at the box office. Office Space is considered a flop, but it's also a beloved cult classic that many people enjoy. But, like, it'd be really stupid to say "I didn't think it was a flop at all. I was entertained."

I remember watching it at the theater as a 13 year old, and back then I LOVED IT. My classmates and I left the room in awe, super hyped, feeling like we could be wizards too. I have to disagree for the most part cause I don't think this was a movie directed towards kids, instead it feels made for pre-teens/teens like me at the time of release. At that age I could not care less about the movie slowing down to show and develop the main character's love story with his crush, or that it sorta becomes his "training arc" for like 30 mins. That was actually the best part, and the one I most remember. The scene where they play Secrets by One Republic changed my brain chemistry forever. Watching it with our seasoned adult eyes changes the perspective and of course, makes you realise it has certain flaws. But I can assure you, it's a movie I hold dear to my heart cause my teen self ADORED the feeling after leaving the theatre that day.

I don't think this movie is amazing but I also vastly prefer this style of animated film reboot than the straight-up remakes Disney is making now. If Disney needs every big-budget film to be attached to a pre-existing IP, I'd much rather have them be based on thinly-veiled original ideas that draw inspiration or that pay homage rather than scripts that regurgitate characters and plotlines that have already been done better. Pirates of the Caribbean succeeded in the first place because it felt more like "let's make a good modern pirate movie" instead of "let's make a movie based on this Disneyland ride", and yet merely being based on things is what defines so many modern Disney movies.

John Carter deserves to be a series. It's the book series that inspired both Dune and Star Wars. It is the original Sci Fi, well as sci fi as you can get in 1912. Mind controlling, False Gods, Gems that hold light, the name Sith itself, giant ship battles, desert planets. Star wars is more like this than Dune but that book series was the first time science fiction was mainstream and its fantasy elements and western elements inspired basically every story to come after it. Sad that it didn't get its fair shot as Star wars got and Dune is getting right now since it is really the original and should be mainstream again

So, Nick Cage had a half decent idea that Disney started pouring millions of dollars into before it was polished. They casted the wrong people, sucked at grabbing their target demographic, and released alongside way too many other movies. Sounds like pouring millions into something that very few people will have the extra money to see after seeing everything else is a terrible idea.

This analysis really makes it clear to me that a little restructuring could have improved the movie without major alterations. Doll goes missing, experienced sorcerers start training their apprentices, romance subplot gets in the way of training, doll gets found and act 2 is a big imaginative fight sequence, big bad gets released for the climax. Just moving act 2 to act 1 and combining acts 1 and 3 minus the climax and finale provides a much better structure for the story.

Another attempt by Disney to launch a Harry Potter/ Lord of the Rings film series was the Chronicles of Narnia. It started out well with the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe but took a noticeable dip with Prince Caspian. Should make a video about those films. Also, a production hell video of the Last Airbender would be a breath of fresh air if you ask me.

I've noticed that when the theory that moviegoers were just burnt out on a certain genre is floated as the cause for something's failure, there's pretty much never an example that's brought up that matches the quality of the films that kicked the genre into gear in the first place. If people were just tired of the genre but the movie was good anyway, you'd expect them to end up as cult classics. Instead, people still enjoy Harry Potter, while we've pretty much forgotten Percy Jackson, Sorcerer's Apprentice, etc.

I actually loved The Sorcerer’s Apperience and I did see the effort there mostly in its acting and visual effects. But it is sad that we didn’t get an sequel due to the box office performance, of three things and I do agree with these factors - Overbudget, which if the story doesn’t match up with the budget, then maybe some problems with the budget unfortunately. - Hard to market: I did feel like there were like the Harry Potter vibes in it and that they are trying to make the next Harry Potter. Which unfortunately didn’t work out. - Tough box office: It went up against with two of my favorite films that is Inception and Descable Me in which they were more successful. Despicable Me not so sure at the time for me, but Inception for sure because of Christopher Nolan due to his successful film that is The Dark Knight at the time back in 2008. These are something I do agree with this video. Very well-said.

Film budgets include marketing. Marketing is something that the PRODUCTION team has to account for in their budget, on every film. So if you hear a film has a 200 million dollar budget, that is supposed to cover every dime from the room for the auditions to the placement of the dvds on the shelves.

I agree with so many of your points! Your point about Act 2 was particularly interesting. My big issue with it was Dave's development - for the title character of the film, I don't think his emotional journey gets as much focus as it should, and unfortunately that might be due to Nic Cage's influence, since Balthazar is the one who really wants to stop Horvath, not Dave. I felt the leap from doubt to confidence was a little too quick, and relied too much on the romance. I would also add that I'm not sure Sorcerer's Apprentice was meant to strictly be a kids film, or that it needed a child star to appeal to a young audience. Look at National Treasure, Nic Cage's other big collaborations with Disney: Those are all adult stars, but since it's a family film and Ben Gates is such a driving character, kids still want to know what happens (and it helps that Ben, like Dave, also gets introduced as a child in the opening scene). But splitting the protagonist role between Dave and Balthazar for this film I think weakened it.

I was at Kolkata when it came out and was reading its review on the newspaper. It got 2 and a half stars while another movie with weird shaped Buildings on the poster named Inception got 4 stars. Rather than disappointed, i was in disbelief. Then i bought its dvd, along with inception, cause why not and watched it. It was good, enjoyable but the 'wow' factor was missing. Afterwards, i watched inception, with the thought of how good could it be to get 4 stars and boy oh boy, a Christopher Nolan fan was born that day. Its still a precious memory as i'm thankful to it for introducing me to Inception.

Strong disagree with your take on the leads. Jay Baruchel was a fantastic awkward teen / young adult casting choice that made me (an awkward teen who loved science) feel validated when compared to the standard fare of protagonists in similar films. Cage's quirky humor and no-nonsense teaching methods felt like the role was literally written for him (which, apparently, it was), and he was my favorite part of the movie by far.
