I think the reason why the script is simplistic, it's because it's Winnie the Pooh, it's not supposed to be complicated, that's why the message of this film and the solution at the end was so polarized. Not every remake has to be gritty, cynical and action-packed and star characters with complex backstories. Sometimes it's best to think about it yourself, rather than movies handing it out to you on a silver platter.

I never liked Tim Burton's live-action Alice in Wonderland because it feels like it has an inconsistent tone, I have a hard time watching it because it tries too hard to be wacky and grimdark-serious at the same time - which is not out of the ordinary for Tim Burton, but it was executed very poorly here compared to his earlier work like Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas (even though Tim only created the characters and story while Henry Selick was the actual director). What makes me like Christopher Robin, Hook (even though Steven Spielberg made it with Sony and not Disney like he originally planned) and the Descendants trilogy as live-action adaptations of animated Disney characters, are that they use the medium of live-action to their advantage in making the characters feel more realistic by giving them more emotional depth than their animated counterparts, while recapturing the same charm, innocence and whimsy of the animated stories whose characters get expanded upon here.

I saw this movie yesterday with my younger sister and we both thought it was incredibly charming. I also felt two messages from the film in said viewing. 1. Growing up sucks eggs through a crazy straw. You're overworked, severely underpaid and Fate just drains all the joy out of your life. It's because of all this stuff that I say it's important to remain a kid at heart. 2. No matter what position you are in life, no matter how busy. NOTHING in this world is more important than family. Take time out of your schedule, if you can and spend time with those you love. Even if it means just sitting back and doing nothing. Because like Pooh said, "doing nothing often leads to the best kind of something"

  • @josepharmstrong1788

Here's the problem with these types of stories most of the time: the kids in these stories rarely have any reason to be upset because the parent wants to spend time. Also, this type of story can be seen as very insulting to a parent that HAS to work a job so they can provide for their family. The reason it works in something like Marry Poppins was because Mr. Banks viewed his family more as a trophy of his success than flesh blood with feelings that he has to tend to. Mr. Coat and Some Jerk with a Camera better explain it in their videos. Though judging how people have been reacting to this movie, this will likely be viewed as one of the better ones.

It IS important to work hard and provide for those you love. But if you work far too much and give yourself too little time to do nothing. You may risk yourself at losing everything. Like how Christopher almost lost everything HE valued in the movie. That comment his wife made to him really shook my spirit a little. I would say what it is...but I don't want to risk spoiling anything

That is almost exactly how I feel about the Disney Channel Descendants trilogy, which is sort of like Wreck-it Ralph in the sense that it has main characters who are not that evil by nature, but born to unfortunate circumstances and have a tough time learning how to stop being villains and start being heroes. What I like most about the Descendants trilogy is the fact that translating animated Disney fairytale characters to the medium of live-action in this particular story, helps keep the story a little more grounded in the reality of morality it presents to us, when being a hero and being a villain are not as clear-cut as the classic animated fairytale films that paved the way for Descendants made them seem.

I actually really enjoyed this movie. Yeah, the plot isn’t that original, but it definitely has a lot of charm and heartwarming moments. And it even got a lot of laughs out of me, too: from Eeyore’s dry and slightly dark sense of humor, to Christopher Robin and other adults trying to make sense of the Hundred Acre Wood’s logic, to vice versa with watching the simple-minded Winnie the Pooh and his friends try to interact with a more realistic environment.

8:43 We all love Jim Cummings right? I think it's because he really is that gifted of a voice actor and singer. No matter what part he is given, whether he'd be a silly old bear, a charming firefly, like any one off side character from Cartoon Network's shws or even help deliver a sinister villain song. This guy really puts his heart and soul into that given part and would always bring something to make that particular cartoon unforgettable. Yes, this film is definitely the case here as Mat claims.

Anna Linde Not to mention, he's such a sweetheart! I was at a local con and bought a DVD to get him to sign and a drawing to give him as a gift. Me being socially awkward and a nervous wreck I didn't know how to approach the guy who was the voice of my childhood. Well he happened to mumble " Who do you call when your in trouble? Without thinking I belted out "Darkwing Duck!" Well, then he recited the next mantra and belted it out and he complimented me on my singing voice. Well, this led to an almost 30 minute conversation. I gave him the drawing and told him how much "Winnie the Pooh" ment to me and whispered in his pooh voice to keep drawing and even asked ME for a hug!! To this day I haven't met a nicer Voice Actor!

I heavily disagree with you. the story arc and christopher robin's return to finding his inner child may be a bit of a cliche, but it fits perfectly for this story. We all knew Christopher Robin as the boy who played with his toys but in reality, We knew very little about Christopher himself what we saw in Winnie the Pooh was only a small fraction of his life and as we all know, the child has to grow up eventually

I agree. I don't think he really understands the essence of what makes movies about these characters so unique and special in the Disney canon. When you consider movies that featured Pooh and his friends in their animated form (The Tigger Movie, Piglet's BIG Movie, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and so on and so forth) what do all these movies share in common that most other Disney movies don't do? Charming characters, a very simple, heartfelt story based more in emotion and imagination than logic and complicated story threads, beautiful animation, and not a lot of action. Winnie the Pooh didn't NEED all the elements that a movie like Aladdin or the Lion King or Mulan did. The stories are more like Bambi or the Fox and the Hound or Dumbo......just a simple, charming moment of time that is captured in the lives of these characters who spend time with their human friend. I watched Christopher Robin recently, and I actually liked the subtle metaphors and symbolism they wove into this movie. Notice how when Christopher Robin visits them as a child, the Hundred Acre Wood is bright and sunny and everyone has gathered together. They are happy, even though they are bidding farewell to their life-long friend. When Christopher leaves and doesn't return and the years pass, the woods slowly grow dark and cold and more grey and foggy and one by one his friends vanish until its only Pooh left waiting at the door for his friend to return (because Pooh is the one who has faith that he will return). Almost like its saying now that Christopher Robin has grown up and left childhood behind him, the magic and imagination has been stolen away and the Woods have gone to sleep. When Christopher Robin follows Pooh back to the Hundred Acre Wood its still very cold and foggy and when he finally finds the rest of his friends, they don't recognize him. Not at first. Its only when he starts playing again with Eeyore and using that rusty imagination that his friends recognize that Christopher Robin has indeed returned and the Wood becomes bright and cheerful again. I also liked how they chose to design the characters. They didn't make them clean and vibrant as they did in the cartoons. They look time-worn and a bit faded.....like well-loved toys that have gone on many adventures over the years.....but the essence of these characters was captured perfectly. I looked at them and I saw the characters I grew up with when I was a child. The wisdom and charm were still there in the characters. He just had to find it again.

I respect your opinion but to be honest, yeah, the plot is simple but that's sorta what Winnie the Pooh was about. It wasn't about big complex story plots. It's Winnie the Pooh. It's a franchise that people watch to feel good, not a complex story. They tried to do that with the Tigger movie and a movie where Christopher Robin goes missing, but hardly anyone brings those up because they either were turned off by that or those movies aren't memorable because that's not what Pooh was about. And a story about a man revisiting his past, well, if I was thinking about an adult Christopher Robin, I think that would be the plot to go with honestly. It's predictable, yes, but Disney has often been about making movies for the feels and what your feelings want to see, so to me this plot is about that than a complex story.

Pooh's Grand Adventure and The Tigger Movie are still well received within the franchise's fanbase. And in fairness even those I wouldn't call 'complex', they delved into more poignant areas than the first film but they were still a fairly simple message just done in a heartfelt way. I think what makes Pooh entertaining is not really the story but the characters, nearly every story is a character study, I think this is why Disney can churn out so much Pooh stuff and only the minority of it people will even consider it 'bad', as long as they get the characters they're fun in nearly any situation.

Also, I remember AniMat reviewing The Peanuts Movie. While, I am glad he gave a positive score on the movie, I do admit that he was harsh on the story. Sure, the story is simplistic, but it supposed to be simplistic. Like Winnie the Pooh, Peanuts has a simplistic charm especially since it is a standard slice of life cartoon. Slice of life cartoons do not have complex storylines because it represents hardships on life.

The movie was so nostalgic for me that I remember smiling when Tigger began singing his song, bringing me back to my childhood memories. When the movie ended and the credits rolled in, I began to cry, I cried so hard that a family approached us to console me, there was even this little girl who showed me her Winnie Pooh teddy bear to cheer me up. It worked, but I won’t deny the movie marked me on a particular stage in my life: I was 4 years near turning 18 back then, I was about to enter high school.

If you look back at the original movies there wasn't much to them either. They were just a series of events in the life of a toy and his boy. The point was to tell stories that were just sweet and innocent. Sometimes they had a lesson, but usually they were just fun. I feel that these characters are protected by God and that they will be with us until the end of our time on earth, and maybe beyond.

I respect your opnion Mat. But i will say that for me i absolutely loved this movie. As a Pooh fan I grew up with the original books plus seeing and owning multiple Winnie the Pooh movies. The simplicity of these stories really touched my heart. These are stories that are about the simplicity of childhood and how imagination can affect you. What i liked about this movie was the fact the message was, dont forget your childlike heart. When times get rough sometimes having a heart of a child can make things better. Or at the very least easier to handle. So this film really did capture that. Overall, this was a film I needed. It was a soother to my anxious adult mind. It brings out the child in me.

Rebecca Partin But it’s directed by the same person who made the Jungle Book reboot, which’s actually pretty good...so I at least have somewhat hope for it. Same goes for Dumbo since Tim Burton is a relatively competent director. But I’m not excited in the slightest for an Aladdin remake. Seriously, Will Smith as the Genie? Who thought that was even *somewhat* of a good idea?!?!!

The Jungle Book remake was ok. It looked nice, but I wasn't too thrilled about the ending (and Christopher Waken) And there was at least one human actor in Jungle Book. There aren't any human casts so unless they add a pointless arc that involves humans, we're just watching another animated movie...which is something we already have. Tim Burton is good when he is directing his original works, not so good when it comes to adaptations of other stuff. And no, I'm not excited for the Aladdin remake either but at least they might be more sensitive to the source material than the Mulan remake might be (sooo stupid!)

Rebecca Partin I personally thought it was better than the original. Like the action scenes made the movie more intense, every actor pretty much nailed their role, Sheer Kahn feels a lot more intimidating and I like how they made him have a connection to Mowgli, and I liked the ending a lot better since it‘s a lot more fulfilling for Mowgli to remain in the jungle with the friends he spent his life with than to leave with a random girl that he suddenly has a crush on. The only scene that felt out of place was with Ka (and why in the heck is he voiced by ScarJo, of all people?), but it at least gives some important exposition for later on. But it’s fine to feel differently. And that’s true, but I still think it could be interesting if they change it up enough from the source material. I mean, Mulan doesn’t have Li Shang, for goodness sake! Still have no clue how they’ll put off a good story considering how important he was for Mulan’s development, but we’ll have to wait and see. And his adaptation of Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children was pretty good. At least for someone who’s read the book such as me. And Big Eyes can be counted as an adaptation too since it’s based on true events, which’s also pretty good.

I still love how the Hundred-Acre Wood gang are fuzzy stuffed animals straight out of their time period. Most other CGI Cartoon characters in Live-Action remakes look cursed and ugly. But Pooh Bear, Tigger, Eeyore, and the rest look as charming and cute as they were always supposed to be. It gave me a feeling of running straight to a toy store to buy plushies of these characters.

Thank God, a remake of an animated and/or book classic that DOESN'T have twerking, pop cultural references, a convoluted "makes no damn sense" plot or random breakdancing in it (looking at the Alice in Wonderland live action movie for that last one). We finally have a pure, sincere and wholesome remake. Let's see how long this lasts, because something tells me Disney is going to mess up the Lion King and Aladdin remakes. I'm just waiting for them to mess up.

I prefer watching the other live action remakes released next year. I'm not going to see any of them to be honest. The only upcoming Disney live action remakes I'm going to see are Mary Poppins Returns, Mulan and The Jungle Book 2. The others I just don't care. I'm starting getting tired of these live action remakes.

I thought the visuals looked okay ,but I knew I probably wasn’t interested from the get-go since not only is the premise a bit cliched...but is undercut by the real life fact that Christopher Robin existed (he was AA Milne’s son, if you’re not in the know) and he HATED how his dad commercialized his childhood.

Sure, the story is cliche but I don't expect anything original these days so I take what I can get. But I do agree with you in that it really did capture the heart of these stories which in my opinion is what actually matters
