After 25 years of evangelical Christianity I knew more about the bible than most of the population. I believed it until I stopped , stepped back and realized that I was an expert in the beliefs writings of ancient superstitious Goatherders. It served no purpose in my day to day activities. Presently Christianity American Nationalist style has been a source of division and a huge threat to democracy. Hitchens claim that religion poisons everything was a prediction that rings so true it’s scary. He said all religions are the same. We can see how extreme islam is against homosexuality and wants to control a woman’s reproductive system….how is that different from what the wacko evangelical right wing nuts are trying to implement? When I left Christiananity my morality was unchanged. I didn’t want to kill anyone, steal or commit a crime any more or less than when I was when I was a firm believer. Most people will be tortured forever just for not believing and being slaves to Jesus. Except for possibly Messianic Jews, the rest burn forever. The whole concept is very comparable to Nazism even if the victims are more broad and slightly different.

Rhonda you know absolutely God exists. Without Him, who exists outside of time? The major flaw with a cult like atheism is 99% of all followers follow not even asking questions. Those that do ask tough questions ultimately leave atheism for God. Evolution is possible, in your minds, until you question…. Who existed outside space and time to create space and time? Science agrees that space and time has a beginning. Your dead charlatan hitchens wouldn’t answer that question because he knows his religion would fall apart. You could start asking those tough questions or continue as a blind sheep in a religion with no answers on the origin of life.

@@2fast2block Let me start off by addressing your most petty and basic of grievances: "word farting" is not something even Hitchens's harshest critics would use to describe his impeccable and effortless command of the English language; whether you agreed with him or not, he spoke eloquently on myriad subjects of which he was well educated. Which brings me to the second part of that same sentence you ironically farted out onto the computer screen: your inane argument that the man whose position it was that theists have no concrete evidence of a divine creator, hasn't provided any proof that there isn't. It should be stated clearly that theists are the ones who claim to know with certainty ... not Christopher Hitchens. He only claimed to know with certainty that you hadn't provided a single shred of concrete evidence for the assertions by which you base your entire life. After all, if a deity didn't need a creator and just "was", why exactly would the universe need one? Ok ...now let's address your distinction between biblical faith and, well, really any other faith: there is none. Faith is defined as a belief or trust without evidence. But you instead assert that it's a "trust by evidence seen." What evidence? That is what Hitch was asking for ... evidence. You say that God asks us "To reason. To get knowledge. To study." Well, I contend that Christopher Hitchens did just that and reached his conclusion based on reason, the knowledge available to any of us and only after careful study. But then you circle back to your definition of "biblical faith" which, according to you, is "trust by evidence seen." Again, what evidence? Clearly, Hitchens didn't see any evidence or I am certain he would have taken your position; and the thing is, neither do you have evidence. Lastly, you say that "God has nothing to hide"; do you mean aside from him/her/itself? Reason - as you say God asks us to do - would conclude that a ubiquitous, omniscient, all powerful and loving god would reveal himself so that we all may bear witness, not make a game out of eternal damnation. Your entire argument is as shallow as you claim Hitchens and his "followers" to be. And the fact you failed to acknowledge is that Hitchens never asked or commanded anyone to follow him - he only argued that you examine the evidence or lack thereof, which we have done here.

My we need more people like this in today's world. Putting to one side the the subjects of his thoughts and whether we agree with them or not the way he describes them is pure genius. And it is impossible for any reasonable person to at least consider and listen to them. I guess that's the sad thing (for me) despite the almost complete saturation of news and information we haven't moved forward at all since those days. Mr. Hitchens would be appalled at the way things have gone. In fact the same forces are still at work even in main stream, ....authority, education, media and celebrity. Influencing and intimidating people into conforming and agreeing to 'their' view of the way things should be. Fascism needs to be redefined, not as a political ideology but as anyone who is intolerant of dissent and seeks to bully others into silence. Dont care if its left or right, black or white. Its about right and wrong and how you behave towards others !

There is still an ample amount of freedom to say what one wishes. Most who make that argument of "being silenced" have mistaken true censorship with having to face consequences for saying things. There is a difference. Of course you and anyone else are judged by what we say just like how we act. A friendship built over decades in mutual respect and forged in vigorous debate, can be completely destroyed in just one sentence. Is the person who said such a thing to ruin the friendship, justified or not, being "silenced", censured, literally being stopped from saying that sentence? Of course not. I'm much more wary of those who claim political correctness or society's norms are stifling them. From what? If something is true AND hurtful, there are skillful ways to bring the idea to attention. The person feeling they are being oppressed for not being able to say these things however and wherever without consequence doesn't realize that what they want to say isn't worth saying in the first place and that feeling comes from their own subconscious or from their own conscience knowing this. Fascism is defined as it should be. Those who would wish to change what it is seems very suspicious to me and also quick to muddy the water on a very hard learned lesson from history.
