My family was very poor, and the family across the street were well off. I was always thrilled about Christmas Day because I could go across the street and play with their toy gifts. I and my sister didn't get much. I still got to enjoy it!

It is amazining to realize that unless you were very rich or very poor most peoples Christmas was pretty similar back then. I was 10 years old in '66. I got the best bicycle l ever had that year.

It seems a little odd, a bit voyeuristic to watch these videos, but I recover so many fond memories of my own family life that has been sadly lost to me. The clothing, toys, decorations, furnishings, every detail can trigger one of my own. For instance, on this date, I was 10 with my brothers 9, 11, and newly turned 13. I'd love to thank the people who put these out. The old running joke about the fear and boredom of being forced in watching home movies doesn't apply anymore? It's the opposite. It warms my heart instead - the joy of these families and the memories it produces of mine. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

When watching these, it's inevitable there are toys I did get and those I didn't. That Plazer Ray Gun was a toy Santa didn't bring with him on his way to my house. For fun, I looked it up, and found that during that time, it retailed for $8.88. Brace yourselves: that $8.88 in 1966 is the equivalent of $77.85 in 2022. $77.85! It was "transistorized", which meant it needed batteries to work. We always liked getting batteries in our stockings, because that meant something cool was waiting for us under the tree... just not that ray gun. I'd never heard of it until now. I was 4 that Christmas, and would be 5 the following January. My sister was exactly 1 year and 4 days old then. Your Christmas looked very much like ours. EDIT: I forgot to mention that my sister had red hair, too.

Exchanging gifts was fun back then but my wife and I stopped that a number a years ago as empty nesters. We found it impractical in a way except if it something very unusual or unexpected. We would rather gift a person or relative and not expect anything in return. That is true giving.

The elderly woman in the opening of the video must be thinking if this will be her last holiday season with her family. Hopefully she had many more wonderful holidays to spend with them.

I love dad's yellow velour shirt, at 1:50 the kids just want to touch it. Remember velour?
