It really is torture for most non-smokers. I can hardly believe we allowed smoking in public and around kids. Your right to smoke ends when you blow that toxic shit into my space. I was ten years old in 63' and we had visited Gettysburg that summer....I awoke to find the 'Johnny Reb Cannon under our tree! Back then, we played 'guns' all day long! None of us grew up and 'killed' anyone, in fact we all grew up with a healthy respect for them. When my Mom passed away several years ago, we cleaned out my old boyhood home, and tucked away in the attic was that old cannon! It now sit's proudly on a hutch in my office! It's both a happy and sad reminder of days long passed! Merry Christmas and thank you for the memories!

You brought such happy memories for me sharing your home movie . Thank you . 63’ we had moved from Germany back to US ( military ) . Dad got Stationed in Ohio outside Columbus. That was my first Christmas in the United States , I was born /raised in Germany. Christmas Eve mom made a ham for dinner, we went to late mass ,came home opened 1 gift, and went to bed so Santa would come. Dad opened up the curtains to see the falling snow covering the yard in white, the lights on the tree, and the glow of dads cigarette (lol) .. off to bed. Years later Dad was killed in Vietnam, mom of cancer, a sister in a car accident , brother to drugs .. but what stays happy in my heart is that Christmas 1963 America 🇺🇸. I loved the way we decorated the living room back then. The twisted crepe paper diagonally across the ceiling. Bell decorations that started off looking like cardboard boots until you brought the card ends round to meet and it was a lovely coloured bell shape. You could hardly see the ceiling for the decorations. They went out of fashion in the 1980s. The house looked lovelier and the coal fire was so cozy. No climate liars to tell you you can’t heat your house any other way except the way they want you to, forcing you to buy their energy at vastly inflated prices. Why can’t people see that no government really cares about our health or safety. It’s ALL for control and profit.

I was 6 years old at Christmas of '63 and my sister was almost 2yo. I got a farm set from Sears that Christmas. The barn was all metal and came with a lot of farm animals and farm equipment made of plastic. I still have it in my attic now. I am sure I also got socks and underwear from my grandparents that Christmas. I think that is all the ever bought me for Christmas and my birthday. This also had to be a very sad Christmas for my parents. My little brother, then 3yo, had died just two days before Christmas the year before. I want to say this was a simpler and good time in 1963. But just remember that President Kennedy had been assassinated just a month before. We were just starting to get involved in the Vietnam war and segregation was still rampant in a lot of the US.

What a nice 'snapshot' of an American Christmas celebration, early 1960s style! I was thinking, that was literally a month after the JFK assassination. I was 9 that Christmas. The other thing I personally recall, that was the year my dad bought one of those aluminum Christmas trees, that were the rage back then. At first, it was tough warming up to a tree that wasn't green, and that you couldn't hang regular lights on it. Over the 11 Christmases we put it up, I grew fond of it, and the "color wheel" spotlight.
@p.foster28
7 ай бұрын
Same exact thing in my family. We went from fresh cut green trees to the year my Dad thought an aluminum tree was the thing to have. All red ball ornaments and, of course, the color wheel. My brother and I hated it. My Mom didn't really like it but she went along with it because of Dad and also, she was just that sweet. However, she did miss the smell of the traditional tree so she when she went to the grocery store, she would stop at the Christmas tree lot out in the parking lot and pick up a few small discarded tree branches. She then brought them home and shoved them under the sofa so we could have some genuine Christmas tree scent. Eventually, my parents went back to a regular tree. But I sometimes wish I had that old aluminum tree ( & color wheel); they're worth a lot in the vintage shops today.

My Dad used to tell us that you drank from the long bottle by sitting back, putting it between your feet, lifting it and tilt it back to drink. Whether that was true or not, those tall Chianti bottles were common. What a window to a past part of our lives. No thanks! As much as I loved the era (I'm 68) I could have done without my aunt's unfiltered Pall Mall stench and my mom's constant stream of Winstons fouling MY air. It really is torture for most non-smokers. I can hardly believe we allowed smoking in public and around kids. Your right to smoke ends when you blow that toxic shit into my space. This is one area I'm damn glad we finally woke about.

Cherish family and memories you make . God Bless

How long was your family stationed at Ohio. My dad got stationed there the following year when I was a few months old.
You can almost smell that beautiful fresh cut Christmas tree. The best Christmas tree lights are STILL the C9 multi colored lights, those STILL do it for me every time and ALWAYS will.
Christmas ' were the best during Camelot , although this one belies the national sadness that came a month previous.
This was so sweet. Memories galore. And the kitty surveying all the empty boxes: "All these scratchy-things for ME?"

Wow, thanks for the memories. I was five, looked like the little girl. I have an older brother and we had a black and white cat too! Our grandma was also with us too. Lots of nostalgia.
Our Air Force family was stationed in Germany at the time. I went to a German school, and they got out for Christmas on December 6. My best present was a set of legos encased in a beautiful compartmented wooden box with latches on the front and two layers of different compartments. I was 11 at the time, and the snowfall, chocolate ornaments, and sweet treats made everything so magical.
Yes, wonderful memories. I was 4 in 63. Wish we could have those times again.

I love this! Christmas of '63, I would have been 1 1/2 years old. Reminicesent of my own childhood. There were four of us children, our Christmas's would have looked very similar to this. A magical time to be alive, indeed!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I was 5 years old, and all I remember was my Christmas was in BLACK AND WHITE, we didn't have COLOR yet! 🤣
I was just six (November 9) in 1963 but I remember the Christmases of my childhood like they were yesterday.
@p.foster28

WOW. What was it with the tall Chianti bottles in the 60's? We had one that stood on our Fireplace. I never understood how they poured the wine. My Dad used to tell us that you drank from the long bottle by sitting back, putting it between your feet, lifting it and tilt it back to drink. Whether that was true or not, those tall Chianti bottles were common. What a window to a past part of our lives. We also have a very similar picture of us kids just like the opening picture in our PJ's in front of the tree. Memories........

Yes Christmas was special. I was not around until 1972 but since we were poor I did not know Christmas until the Foster Home in 1977 and learned about Mary giving birth to Jesus....the next year I was adopted and was surprised about Christmas again and Jesus....and I asked my adopted mother, "Was Mary going to have a girl this year?" It still gets told and laughed about even today....we used to open our presents one at a time so we could see and enjoy what someone got....and we wrote thank you letters to everyone who gave us a gift....I can still see myself at our kitchen table, while it was snowing outside and Christmas tunes on the stereo....writing those Thank You letters.....

It was the only white Christmas I've ever experienced. I also remember it as a time with some sadness. It was just over a month since President John F. Kennedy had been murdered in Dallas, Tx. Christmas of 1964 found my family and I living in Dallas, having moved there from Bossier City back in the summer. On Christmas Eve of 1964, the mercury in Dallas hit 99.F.
