102 y/o Dancer Sees Herself on Film for the First Time

UPDATE: Alice passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 6th, 2016. She spent the last day of her life in good spirits, enjoying listening to music and having her mail read to her. Thank you to all the thousands of fans who sent in cards, flowers, and art. You truly gave her deep joy and meaning in the last years of her life!
---
Alice Barker was a chorus line dancer during the Harlem Renaissance of the the 1930s and 40s. She danced at clubs such as The Apollo, Cotton Club, The Zanzibar Club, and on Broadway-with legends including Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Although she danced in numerous movies, commercials and TV shows, she had never seen any of them, and all of her photographs and memorabilia had been lost over the years.
After years of searching we found three "Soundies" Alice appeared in and were finally able to show them to her - she had never seen herself in motion in her life!
You can learn more about Alice at the little website we've set up for her: www.alicebarkernotbaker.com/
All of Alice's films from this video are collected here: • Alice Barker on Film
For more info about the dancers of the Harlem Renaissance, we recommend the lovely documentary "Been Rich All My Life" -several of the women in the film danced with Alice back in the day!
A little more about the who's who here: "We" are friends of Alice who searched for the films and made this video. I'm David Shuff, a volunteer who visits the home with my therapy dog Katie, and have known Alice for 8 years. The woman in the video is Gail Campbell, a recreation therapist (and an amazing one at that!). She never gave up on finding Alice's films, and uncovered the first piece of the puzzle that lead to us finding them - which was Alicia Thompson; a historian of black female performers who had been looking for Alice for years (her site is forclassicmovieloversonly.trip... and her KZread channel is "MusicandDancing4Ever"). She told us that Alice was in films called 'soundies'.
Using that clue I found jazz historian Mark Cantor of jazz-on-film.com and he was able to send us three of Alice's soundies from his collection. Shortly afterwards Alicia got us a few more films.
This video was filmed on cellphones (and almost as an afterthought!) by my friends Darin Tatum and Tom Hunt.

It's so incredible to imagine that she was born in 1913, and while this video is almost a decade old by now and she's long gone already, it's still insane to think just how much she lived through. She lived through both world wars, has experienced the creation of the TV, colored film all the way to the creation of the computer, internet and smartphones and of course more.
So sad to think everyone in the dancing videos are dead….yet we are seeing them on this video in their youth, so young vibrant full of life. Life is crazy.
She said something that hit home, "I was being paid for doing something I love " I wonder how many of us can say the same thing

You can tell she was beautiful. She looks incredible for 102. Her bone structure is stunning. Then I saw the film…wow. It has to be so hard to outlive everyone you knew and loved in your youth. She witnessed so many changes throughout her life. It makes my heart ache from the beauty, and the pain, all at once. Life is wild.
Alice Barker was a vibrant, joyful soul that lived her life to the fullest. I strive to be as happy and at peace with my life as Ms.Barker. Her dancing was fantastic, and her smile seemed to brighten the room. Rest peacefully, Ms.Barker.

Man I was about to write the same thing. I literally repeated that part of the video a dozen times and my whole life, past and future reflected right there. The feelings I got are mixed, feels like you finally end your life story and prepare to move somewhere else but man I almost cried literaly. She wanted to do it all over again. As I would probably like to when I also inevitably grow old... Life is such a bitch really.

What she said has really opened my eyes. I imagine myself looking back on my earlier years and sadly I spent much of my time on the computer, not really doing anything other than playing games and watching tv shows. This really motivates me to go out and do something with my life, something other than video games and tv shows and movies. I want to explore the world and create new memories; to something that is more memorable.

That a long time ago, might felt like a moment to her. She looked happy to looking back through old memories. Hopefully, she had a fulling life. Many might see long life as either a blessing or a curse. I hope her ending was peaceful . She reminds me of my mother .😢

He remembers how pretty she was then and, even though injured and alone for 2 days, she made no fuss, casually sharing how she pulled herself along the carpet and up on her couch and didn't call anyone because she, "didn't want to be a bother.
