Chris Hemsworth's Optimus Prime Sadly Won't Be Australian in Transformers One

While Chris Hemsworth will voice Optimus Prime in the upcoming animated movie Transformers One, the leader of the Autobots won’t be Australian. During a press junket for Extraction 2, Collider’s Steven Weintraub uncovered how Hemsworth approached his first animation gig, which sadly won’t feature his natural Australian accent.
While the entire Transformers franchise revolves around the eternal war between Autobots and Decepticons, no movie has ever explored the origins of the feud between Optimus Prime and Megatron, the respective leader of each faction. That’ll change with Transformers One, an upcoming animated movie that’ll tell the origin story of some of our favorite robots in disguise. The movie will stay true to the TV and comic book history of the Transformers, promising to tap into the nostalgia of adults and the excitement of children to deliver a fun experience for all ages. Transformers One also counts a star-studded voice cast, with Hemsworth in the lead role of Optimus Prime. However, while the Australian star will lead the Autobots, he won’t use his natural accent. In Hemsworth words:
“No, I mean, we talked about this; the Optimus Prime that you hear on the screen in the films is an older, mature… you know, he’s been around for many, many, many, many years. This is the sort of origin story, so it's the younger version of him. So there are sort of hints and colorings that hopefully resonate enough with the Optimus Prime we know, but it is a youthful version of him, and different. But he won't be Australian.”
This Is Why Chris Hemsworth Got Involved with Transformers One
During the press junket, Hemsworth praised the animation of Industrial Light & Magic, who previously worked on Bumblebee. However, as good as Transformers One might look, and as solid as its script might be, Hemsworth joined the Autobots thanks to his children. As the star puts it:
“It looks incredible. I love the script. That was one where I was not sure, I hadn't done animation before, and then I mentioned it to my kids, and they went, “Oh yeah, that's awesome!” It's been really fun putting down some of the dialogue and weaving it in with the early days of the animation. It's cool, it's exciting. It's Optimus Prime, come on!”
Transformers One will reunite Hemsworth with his MCU co-star Scarlett Johansson, who’ll voice Elita, a fellow member of the Autobots. Transformers One voice cast also includes Keegan Michael-Key (Schmigadoon!) as Bumblebee, Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) as Alpha Trion, Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as Sentinel Prime, and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) as Megatron.
Transformers One is set to roll out into theaters on September 13, 2024.

No one can ever compare to Peter Cullen.
It is really nice that they are making Chris is voicing the younger version of Optimus (or Orion Pax since that was Optimus's original name).

If its Orion Pax I would be ok with that, but as Optimus it has to be Peter. Call me nostalgic but I cant see anyone other than Peter as Optimus. If only they could get Frank Welker to play Megatron.

Why does the title say "sadly"? because knowing he won't do an Australian accent for Optimus is a fortunate development.
I think it’s good he’s not using he’s own accent because if it feels too much like Chris the experience could be distracting

100% agree, however, I think it has mostly to due with the fact that over 80% of transformers voice actors are American and therefore most of the transformers are gonna have an American like sounding accent, so American accents have sorta become a staple on transformers ESPECIALLY Optimus Prime.

The fact that this title is labeling it as "sadly", it's funny to me. When an actor wants to play the character how they're supposed to be betrayed, then let them do it. Chris Hemsworth is an underrated actor and I love that he is voicing a young version of Optimus!

Producers for Transformers movies and shows should start looking into good, underrated actors to voice their characters. The likes of Chris Hemsworth or Tyrion Lannister are beloved but mostly forgotten actors who know how to act and give life to their characters. We need more.

Or have them look for actual real and professional voice actors because casting big-named celebs to voice act in your animated movies because you couldn't be bothered to hire real voice actors because they don't have enough name recognition is disrespectful and backward.

If I had a nickel for every time an iconic character colored in Red and Blue that debuted in the 80s and would be voiced by a Chris, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Peter Cullen could have still done it, This decision to cast Chris was a studio tone deaf business Man or Woman in suit that wanted a star to attract box office receipts but Chris will still do a good job so as the guy who's voicing Megatron even though it's not Frank.
It’s CRAZY hearing Lorenzo’s name here (which is normal since he’s the producer for all the TF films) ever since I have worked and started knowing him personally. The man is a GEM amongst Hollywood producers, which is rare to see for his status

So excited to hear his take! A younger Optimus (and Orion before that) works a lot better with a younger, more energetic voice since the war would only really be in its infancy (and technically hasn’t even started yet in TF: One), so I definitely don’t think he’d have to sound remotely like Cullen. After eons of experience and war, an older, more grizzled and wise tone of voice makes a lot more sense. Super excited to see how Chris handles it cause the potential is insane!!

An Aussie Prime would sound weird, coming from an Aussie myself. I hope it sounds good, he worked with Peter Cullen to "perfect" the voice for Primus' sake. I hope it's good.
