Chris Hedges 'America: The Farewell Tour' | Town Hall Seattle

How do we keep ourselves from losing faith in our country? Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Chris Hedges takes Town Hall’s stage for a provocative examination of America in crisis-in the form of his book 'America: The Farewell Tour'. America, says Hedges, is convulsed by an array of pathologies that have arisen out of a profound malaise of hopelessness. These have resulted in an epidemic of diseases of despair and a civil society that has ceased to function. Hedges asserts that the opioid crisis, the rise of magical thinking, the celebration of sadism, and a host of other ills are the physical manifestations of a society ravaged by corporate pillage and a failed democracy. Join Hedges for a sobering discussion of the changing landscape of our country-and a poignant cry from communities across America that seeks to jolt us out of complacency while there is still time.
Chris Hedges is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and former foreign correspondent for fifteen years for The New York Times where he served as the Middle East Bureau Chief and Balkan Bureau Chief. He previously worked overseas for The Dallas Morning News, The Christian Science Monitor, and NPR. He writes a weekly column for the online magazine Truthdig out of Los Angeles and is host of the Emmy Award-winning RT America show “On Contact.” He is the author of the bestsellers American Fascists, Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt, and was a National Book Critics Circle finalist for War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning.
Presented by Town Hall Seattle and Seattle University.

How inspirational can a man possibly be??!! Although not a religious person I have for him the utmost respect in just so many ways. Chris Hedges is one who honours and even more, practices his values which who of any inner substance can possibly deny. To be honest, I am in awe of this man in terms of his intellect, his understanding of history, his determination and strength to stand up for what is right, but beyond everything else, his courage against all odds is profound. And yet, even though there are in excess of 248,000,000 adults in the U.S. this video has in two some odd years garnered only 18,000 viewers of whom only 48 have even bothered to comment.

The human race is blessed to have this man at this time and we are so lucky to hear him speak in real time. Yes, amount of views garnered for this speech is shocking, which I think you meant to say. That's why we must send Chris' speeches to as many people as we can. Long live Chris Hedges, a giant for justice and peace.

@@jollyrogercrest663 - Well, we certainly are in the same camp vis-a-vis religiosity which is rife with right wing rhetoric and hate. You nailed that one, too. Why they don't recognize their own hypocrisy is waaaay beyond my understanding. We here in Canada mostly fear the election results if the Democrats are unable to get the poll numbers up into the stratosphere to decimate this current administration no matter what tricks they pull to skew the vote. Mind you, the Democrats including Biden, Pelosi and others are no street angels. Still, I was saddened to learn that Mr. Hedges plans on voting Green Party. IMESHO, splitting the liberal minded vote at this point is a self-defeating strategy. But then, Mr. Hedges is nothing but consistent in his values Moreover, I'd be a fool not to know that he's much more astute, learned, and experienced than I could ever be, so somewhat reluctantly, I must give a pass to this beautiful human being, not so secretly hoping that few others follow suit. There! A fine example of talking out both sides of one's mouth. The other thing I don't understand is that there are, in fact, a bountiful number of Americans who are socially liberal minded and have among their number people who have the brain power, the skill, and the ethics to get the U.S. out of its present quagmire. And yet Trump ends up as President. There truly is something putrid going on behind closed doors which we plebes are most decidedly not privy to. But, don't get me wrong, we've made some disastrous moves when "we" voted in Mulroney and Harper--both caused immeasurable harm to our social safety system during their terms of office. Obviously, we have our fair share of arm-dragging, non-discerning, non-thinking Neanderthals in our own camp. Bosh on the lot of them whichever side of the border they hail from. I read somewhere (source not remembered) that socially liberal voters far outnumber the Neanderthals but for any number of reasons don't bother to vote. If that trend continues into this upcoming election, we in the West are goners!!! I apologize for going on at such length, saying probably nothing you and other like-minded individuals don't already know. How I do get exercised over this issue I certainly hope the American people at large take this upcoming election seriously. Ultimately, so many lives are at stake, so I'm hoping that "our" side turns out in droves. Thanks so much for commenting and for "finding" Chris Hedges, truly a man of great integrity and wisdom.

@@Scathingly fabulous comment and really thought provoking, even if I knew alot of it prior it's good for reinforcement for matters as complicated as these. Chris has in a way convinced me to, maybe, persue to be an activist campaigner. But with so many causes including but not limiting to climate change, where I would rather called it a climate catastrophe, anti corporate, equality there are so many to choose. As I think about it more. I feel the choice I think matters the most is campaigning against misinformation and soft language on matters that are critical to survival I never heard of Chris till last week, but I knew Chomsky, Malcolm x and King. Which really makes me wonder....why, im 30 and moving back to Ireland this week due to the rise of right wing facism in the UK which is scaring my family. a few months ago It came to my knowledge that a person whom I went to school with in Ireland is currently the leader of an independent alt far right religious nationalist, which absolutely left me agasped. My home in Ireland is about as remote as you could imagine, this shocked me. How did this happen? Facism is not being spread by pamphlets like communism did with the labor movements in Liverpool and Birmingham and the northern towns of the UK after the first world war, it is in KZread comments like this and closed Facebook groups. I have watched some of the videos live streams and the straw man arguments and language used is inciteful. Dog whistling all the way through. How do we solve this? People living in their ponds absorbing any truth that's fed to them. Different cardinal truthes neither clashing nor meshing, nobody is invalidated but nobody is right. A world being engulfed with truth. I think this will be the killing stroke. I always knew it, but I feel Chris confirmed it. I hope some people can stop this. His idea of the daughters of hope are courage and anger (paraphrasing) but I think that is really reassuring and for that I'll always be thankful. I can breathe now, even if it's just a little

@@jollyrogercrest663 Wow! You are the hope of tomorrow but I don't envy the task that lies ahead of you and other like minded individuals of your generation. You are doing your homework which unfortunately, so many aren't. More to the point, you're using your brain to sift through so much of the misinformation that too many take for the truth at face value. But, it is hard, arduous and a no way easy endeavour. There simply is too much group think; independent thinking and astute observation are becoming lost arts. All one need do is check out the curriculum of our schools and how subjects are taught to realize that learning how to think is not even in the mix. Most of history taught in schools is a crock and it is rarely if ever critiqued in any kind of meaningful way--if at all. History of other countries is not considered important never mind its accuracy. Geography? Whatever is that? But consumerism? Now, that we have mastered and we've become hamstrung by it. You're right, there are so many CRITICAL issues that must be addressed and carefully assessed. Wherever to begin. As yours spins at the daunting task ahead, mind does too. @@IMSiegfried They've been doing it at pipeline protests as well. I've seen footage of them at Standing Rock. They are said to be mercenaries in the pay of the pipeline corporations in those protests. They showed up at Occupy Wall$treet as well, obviously in the pay of Wall$treet. Here, the only question is who is signing the checks, and the obvious answer is AgolfTwitler. How the money is being routed to give him and everyone else who needs it plausible deniability is just a detail. I've been researching all this for a while and the likeliest source of mercenaries willing to shoot at American civilians is Erik Prince (brother to Education Sec, who knows nothing whatsoever about education and was handed her Cabinet position for donations and other favors from her family) secret army that hires itself out for pay, and has no ideology beyond money. They acquire their personnel from soldiers as they are deploying home from the middle east, especially if they have especially useful skills, like sniping, explosives, special operations, you get the drift. Only then they get to use their skills for really attractive pay and benefits packages. Can you imagine some poor f*cker who has just been told that after he was promised a green card and a path toward citizenship for standing up as cannon fodder that the government is now going back on its word, his family has already been deported to some country they've never lived in, and instead of going home and reuniting with them, he is being sent to an altogether different country that he's never lived in and maybe doesn't even know the language? Think that makes him "love" America? And someone comes along, offers him a job using the skillset the USArmy taught him, maybe even against that Army itself, or civilians from the country that f*cked him over? For ten times what the Army was paying him? They can give him a place to live in any European or Commonwealth nation, bring his family back from wherever they've been disappeared to, and he just has to perform missions now and then. How much do you think he cares about what the president or the head of the CIA or the head of joint chiefs have to say about anything? The one thing that the orange moron has been incredibly good at is picking which propaganda messages to point at which audience. We are standing on a precipice of ice, and it is cracking and breaking underneath us. The rest of the world wants nothing at all to do with us and except for Putin and his henchmen, we have no allies at all, since we've shut down every trade agreement, violated every treaty, disrespected every nation that was on our list of friends. Having a professional victim as a prez doesn't really work very well at all when he wants to translate his schoolyard coward-bully tantrums to every one of our allies. He thinks they are "taking advantage of us"--the same thing he used to complain about when he was a slumlord in NYC, eh? "They're picking on me!" "Germany and England aren't paying their fair share of NATO costs?" Have you ever heard of negotiating changes, Mr. Let's-Make-A-Deal? No, your first go-to is whining like a little baby and your second is pointing nukes at our allies. Can any on you imagine that would have happened if this fuckwad had been behind the wheel during the Cuban Missile Crisis? The capital of the nation would have been in Denver since 1963, since the entire southeast of the nation up to about Pennsylvania and back to west Texas would still be a radioactive hellscape.

@@IMSiegfried Neoliberalism is definitely on both sides. You want to know who paid for mercenaries, strategically planted skids of bricks used by paid protesters to destruct, look at George Soros and the rest of the dirt that buy politicians and policies. Soros was a bloody NAZI at age fourteen, proud of it and came to the USA to do exactly the same thing he and his Nazis did to Poland, destroy the country from the inside out. Pieces of shit like this should have been extradited decades ago but oh no, people love to over consume in capitalism which is fine and dandy until the fascists and Neoliberals love to take everything away and watch the towns and then the cities rot from within. What's most sad and ignorant is most people don't have the sense, wit, intellect nor honest integrity or courage to look in the mirror and admit they too are nothing more than immigrants. Why does anyone wonder why the UN and the W.H.O. propagate a world wide BS Corona Virus? Fauchi and Gates vaccine is the same Neoliberal vaccine that's already killed, sterilized and paralyzed millions of people of ALL ages in Africa and India. Anyone can take this fact to the bank. Gates: "Population must get to near zero." Think they can bomb and shoot populations down to that without a civil war, which there will be one shortly or commit the world genocide by way of vaccine and 5G? I would bet on the latter. Unless there is massive moral revolts against the wealth dictating the next 30 years of mass murder everyone can kiss their children and grandchildren good bye and everyone can be assured the remaining 500 million to max 1 billion from the 7 billion WILL BE USED as they were in the hunger games. The ONE Ominous God gave every single person a mind, to use. The entire USA Army and every Police Force should be fighting against this TRYANNY. Arm Chair Critics avail nothing. A moral uprising as was seen during the Arab Spring may be the last chance for the American Empire before it falls and it all crumbles to the earth.

Chris Hedges is one of the few unsung heroes of our time. The reason he is not killed is because he is marginalised by the imperial media, and in "their" calculation he is small potatoes and does not have the power to make big changes. Now that more amd more people are paying attention to him, he recently said that social media companies are manipulating algorithims to limit his lectures and articles from reaching the masses.

Against all the odds of historic brutal murderous White armed outnumbered with draconian methodologies. Not sitting in the succor at home circumscribed to sitting quietly reading biblical strictures. Without sublime assertive public passive resistance against and outnumbered by a wicked murderous majority.

It betrays itself that somehow mankind has goodness in them as we know evil is abound. The only way to live is to know that we live in a universe that God created and he is coming back to collect his own. Real good comes from believing him. This world will end and life starts again but in a different kingdom.
