Chris Hedges "Fascism in the Age of Trump"

Journalist, author and war correspondent Chris Hedges spoke at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY on November 10, 2017 on fascism and empire in the age of Trump.
www.mediasanctuary.org
Chris Hedges is the best-selling author of War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (2003), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. A quote from the book was used as the opening title quotation in the critically-acclaimed and Academy Award-winning 2009 film, The Hurt Locker. The quote reads: "The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug."
Hedges, whose column is published Mondays on Truthdig, has written twelve books, including the New York Times bestseller Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (2012), which he co-authored with the cartoonist Joe Sacco. Some of his other books include Unspeakable (2016), Wages of Rebellion: The Moral Imperative to Revolt (2015), Death of the Liberal Class (2010), Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle (2009), I Don’t Believe in Atheists (2008) and the best selling American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America (2008). In 2011, Nation Books published a collection of Hedges’ Truthdig columns called The World As It Is: Dispatches on the Myth of Human Progress.
Hedges previously spent nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent in Central America, the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. He has reported from more than 50 countries and has worked for The Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio, The Dallas Morning News and The New York Times, for which he was a foreign correspondent for 15 years.
Hedges was part of the team of reporters at The New York Times awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for the paper’s coverage of global terrorism. He also received the Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism in 2002. The Los Angeles Press Club honored Hedges’ original columns in Truthdig by naming the author the Online Journalist of the Year in 2009 and again in 2011. The LAPC also granted him the Best Online Column award in 2010 for his Truthdig essay “One Day We’ll All Be Terrorists.”
Hedges is a senior fellow at The Nation Institute in New York City. He has taught at Columbia University, New York University, Princeton University and The University of Toronto. He currently teaches prisoners at a maximum-security prison in New Jersey.

Glad i'll soon be 77 years of age, i think we need AI to take us over maybe, not looking forward to being young again, only the young can sort this out now! - imagine communists like China or Russia top dogs, your freedom will be gone then, as capitalism declines. Hope America comes to it's senses soon. Doubt it, as long as big business is the monkey on it's back. 🤨

I would bet real data on the relentless drastic reduction of Arctic sea ice, destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, increasing frequency and severity of forest fires and weather disasters, and other very real examples of rapidly worsening climate change, are not covered. Neither are the ever-widening wealth gap, the record debt levels of both individuals and corporations, the decimation of the middle class in the U.S., and other very real examples of how an uncaring ruling class (the 1%) has totally abandoned the vast majority of ordinary citizens (the 99%). @Allison Bauch I agree. The version of hope most people cling to has been called "hopeium". When I think about hope I think of two quotes: “Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are.” -- St Augustine “Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism. It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out. It is the ability to work for something because it is good, not because it stands a chance to succeed.” --Vaclav Havel, former dissident and first president of the Czech Republic.

And you think Hillary Clinton and her corporate globalist agenda would be best for humanity? Sir, do you understand what corporate globalism is? The entire world is moving away from corporate globalism and it's agenda of governance by means of unelected elitist bureaucrats appointed by the Rothschild private central banks and the mega corporations. Donald Trump is leading that way. Please do not confuse him and the "current" U.S. with the old corporate globalist minions such as Barack Obama, the Bushes and the Clintons. Each individual nation's sovereignty will be respected in this new world that is about to unfold. Please don't be fooled into believing that China is leading the way to a more sovereign and democratic world. China was created by the same corporate globalists that tore Serbia up over 20 years ago, and is still meddling in Serbia, Kossovo, etc. China is still run by the Communist party which serves that country as a board of directors would serve a mega corporation. There is absolutely no democracy, none whatsoever, in China. The Chinese people are a smart and a good people. They too need to rise up and throw the shackles of their authoritarian government off, like Russia, which had communism imposed on it by the corporate globalists in 1917, did. Behind the scenes my friend, Presidents Putin and Trump are working together to rid this world of that corporate globalist menace.

My wife is a pastor, and I will get her to share them with her congregation and denomination. His time in the Middle East and many other places has obviously engrained in him an empathy for the most vulnerable populations which most Americans will never feel. So I see now that every day I don't do something, I am also complicit in being part of the problem. Thanks Chris. I will do better. I will do my part to try to create change.

The US terror of communism has led to the WORST health services in the western world, and everyone sits there saying "we are the greatest" and refusing to have a decent health care system for all Americans out of this irrational fear of "socialism/communism". Now look at the situation under trump's denial and slow response to the Corona virus in a truly crappy health care system (where he also dismantled the pandemic response unit!). Americans are dying from ignorance and their "fear of communism". -- As at the end of March. Just watch April. And he will keep blathering. And the GOP will keep trying to destroy Obamacare. @J. Milton Jeffreys Because we have evidence to support the natural beginnings of the universe. If you have evidence, you don't need faith. Those claiming a supernatural beginning have a much worse problem. Natural forces exist. They can be demonstrated. Not one supernatural force or event has EVER been demonstrated, not once in history. So until that changes, 'supernatural' is off the table. Ever been to a party? a gathering of friends? Did it end? So why even bother going if it's going to end one day? My life has meaning to me, and those around me. Arrogance is assuming that 100 billion galaxies with 250 billion stars in each, was made as a pretty backdrop for us.

These are not mass meetings. He speaks truth to a small minority who most likely do not have the skills or contacts to make use of the insights. Many informed socialists have long held similar views. I meet it , hear it in London. Neoliberalism is destroying any chance of restoration of progressive movements. That is why we have Boris, a cynical narcissist. And you have Trump. They are both cause and consequence. My son is in China learning mandarin, because he is an internationalist and those able to communicate across cultures will be vital in overcoming the obstacles that are preventing us finding solutions for humanity.

Globalist NWO are still at work with tools of Homeland Security, Google ,Fb ,Cell Phones wit new 5G ( control of Neurological & Biological Alterations ) to CONTROL how you Think,Act and Feel. Jonathan Cook he's a great speaker but he borders on being a dramatist. He takes truths, corporate influence in democracy, imbeciles in bureaucracy, military industrial complex, and the influences and protections of the wealthy, but he turns these up to 11 and concludes "the US will not exist in 10 years", and Davos will choose and become the rulers of the fascist super structure that rises from the ashes. My dad worked for a company who's owner attended Davos. He's not an illuminati who makes the real choices behind the facade of democracy. He's just a wealthy business owner who has influence in economic policy, too much influence (not him personally but as a group) probably. I've read 2 of Hedges books, listen to his speeches. He should not be a civic leader. He's misleading and destroying faith in institutions that are not obsolete or too weak to rejuvenate our country. Orwell gave a vision of where democracy can go if it's not tended too, he did not falsely state the United States was 10 years from being Oceania.

It can choose to be, or it can become an oligarchy. It has chosen the path of the latter. And that is why the USA will be gone, split into little warring states in 10 years. The ultra wealthy, the small fascist fraction* will make sure of that as they strip away what's left of the nation's soul and wealthy. * Rothschilds, Waltons, Koch Brothers, etc.

The leftist are trying desperately to collapse the country so they can bring in their global utopian nightmare. Don't believe the hype. Trump was elected with overwhelming support because Americans realized the fascism that had infiltrated their country over the previous Obama years. While the problem is not partisan, it is ideological. Fascism, socialism, communism are all LEFTIST ideologies. I really feel for Chris Hedges on a personal level. Unlike say Blyth, or Chomsky, whom seem to revel in being intellectual bad boys, Hedges seems to be at heart a very conservative man in the true sense of the word, driven to the extremes by the rabid greed and sociopathic nature of mainstream politics. The corruption of it seems to visibly torture him. It takes a special kind of courage to take an unpopular stand like he does.

And this speech is from an intellectual giant and a brutally honest member of homo sapiens - which is rapidly approaching its shelf life as a species. But this John Coltrane-torrent of ideas may be over estimating how well-read the majority of us may be, or how much we can cognitively handle, minute-by-minute. Meh, maybe I am just confessing my own limits Would love to hear a dummy's guide to Chris Hedges, a bit of a sparser Miles Davis approach, with enough empty space between ideas to give this dummy a chance to fill in the gaps for myself. Have read only a fraction of his many references, much less channeled them to the point of spiritual cleansing and action. Thank god for KZread videos, the pause button, and replay. @David Chorak He describes it dramatically, but if it sounds like doom it is because shit is pretty bad. It's to avoid downplaying how bad it is. And it is not being a star eyed idealist to point it out. Regarding China, if i can agree with Tucker Carlson that those senators deserve jail, you can reach it. An authocrat government is ultimately shit. But they didn't sell their system piecemiel for votes. When 2008 came you could have an organised response (a lot of shit was built very quickly). Same now w/ the virus . Which, even if it is downplayed, cannot have reached the proportions of Italy or Spain. Granted i'm loose w/ the word preacher. Jordan, your nation empire is dying. Gone by 100 years after Germany's filthy flag became the image of its shame; now it is USA's flag that is the ugly face of your dying nation's false steps. Unless a Roosevelt, possibly Bernie Sanders, comes to lead this beleaguered nation out of desperate times, your nation will break apart into minor states. Roosevelt was old and wise; Sanders is even wiser. So there may yet be a future for a United States of America.

If my father was still alive I would owe him an apology, because he was right. The rich get richer, and more powerful. Only a chosen few own and run everything, and boy you ain't shit. So shut up try to make a few bucks and be happy with what they let you have, cause they could take that too. And that's what we face today, These people are coming for it all...

Even when I read a Hedges article, I hear his oratory tone, his resonance is eloquent and stylized of that of speakers of our recent past. And I adore it. It brings the filth of the topic to a state worthy of digesting. It flings mud at the guilty, while making the accused 'feel' lower than otherwise would. Bravo, once again, Mr Hedges.

Thank you Chris Hedges - I've had wafts of these thoughts over the years, but could never articulate my misgivings. Mr. Hedges, this was stunning and coherent! My Mother (84) and I watched together. She didn't say much, but she was nodding her head the whole time. Our system has a way of numbing/drowning/distracting us to the truths you spoke. Thanks again.

yes , and its all double talking dem's like this guy hedges...you cant hear it?? he supported every bit of what he dont even know he talking about is why it happened...he quoted the muslim guy abu'' as if he was morally superior to us...listen and you hear the run hide, dont take the blame for political correct swamp that has led to all this...he part of it, did nothing.. bc truly, i know he cant see the forest for the trees, bc he is clinging to dem philosophy...way past normal lies...just believing ''hope and dreams'' ..not reality.. that has been the problem...obama did it for 8 yrs...and pushed some of this ''guilt racism' junk talk about muslims dreaming also...there has and will be more than ''just a few'' bad...obama and this type guy allowing muslims now into usa unchecked is insane..while we are at war with them in their own country..and trying shift blame... must change belief, .'' when dem's quit sanctuary illegal...and we need stronger cia...not snowden types ratting you and your gov out ...that is treason my friends...same for chelsea girl... need jail time...we used to and still do get trouble in military just for attitude.. we have chance to make america some'' greater again... this type ''journalist'' is not ... he is what has helped it sink..dosnt want to face it... wake up, this guy 'is' one of the dividers...current collapse 2020 now proves it... or keep ''dreaming''' into the swamp...trump ''has'' the right idea, even with some wrong attitudes, way better... we need ''stop all immigration'' bc of dem's letting so many ''illegal''s in...until we can handle it...and yes, muslims need checking more than others...we are at war and dont want to be.. this guy certainly wrong about that also...and so sad we cant follow our legal immigration policies and quotas correctly bc of this guy type thinking.. wake up some... this guy needs to stop being 'white guilty'' and white apology' this kind of talking is exactly what drags us into wars and tells the enemy that they are right...such as in vietnam...wanting one country should have been democratic as we wanted...sorry it ddnt and so many americans duped into thinking ho chi minh was a good guy ...it was a total miss of attitude created like this and jane fonda types...who total ddnt think right... and played with ppls lives like a game....we never should have been there in that capcity...i dont think either...but communist were way more dirty nasty killlers than us....in the end it proves again...its up to the people of the country to do their own fighting.... lets change that now also....simply this guy needs to quit blaming america and others to start with... takes too many words.. he used a lot.... cia, yea, simply if you remember...it was these type ''journalists' that exposed cia men/women names out to the world and got many of our good cia killed and their contacts...same in UK where the near top guy was finally the one doing it for payoff...many killed in russia...and that guy had no remorse either when caught.....we must get smarter...and punish leakers... there is a whistle blower system...use it...some tough, but got to go there.... many of though have been backstabbed by this type guy...and dont know it.... ive seen at job...and many have caught them at it...women specially...pray we fix

Same here. However I still will vote for President Trump before I would vote for the left. President Trump has just made a statement about the wars and that we have no place in that part of the world. We should not be policing anyone. Im at least holding faith in my Lord Jesus Christ that the prayers that went up to the heavens would help us heal our lands and our hearts and that he would forgive us. Only he can turn this ship around and its going to take us working together. The things I hear like global warming and carbon footprint I think of how many years its been used to get money to further global New World Order takeovers and the ones that brought it to us is the very ones that called us to war. We can't start or stop the global warming or weather that has seasonal changes always different from year to year but the studies show its got a pattern and its always the same in its changes over the decades. The twisted of what is good is bad and right is wrong and up is down. However out of this has been seen and it would not have been seen if we didn't have President Trump to show us the hypocrisy and enslavement of our people and the need to spread our love to our people everywhere even if its not safe because if we don't give our love to the ones that are lost and in despair we will lose this and I'm seeing the conversation begin and the outreach of our people wanting to help each other and Thats the unity that makes us stronger and gives us the strength to prevail and forgiveness is what we work towards everyday and to not give up especially in the face of oppression and suppression of our own people. If we stay distant from those that are over the top the more they will grow even more with people that feel badly and if one is bigger than that anger and is willing to reach out and ask them to forgive us from our failures and maybe they can see that we did not know that what they had gone through might be different from ours and they can open up to wanting to know what happened to you and why you feel your way and that is the opening of what is needed to be done to start to heal. God Bless

That is what Gesara or Nesara was created to do. 1951. 130.nations deposited in underground facilities in the Philippines in TRUST" millions of tonnes of gold, diamonds platnium and art works. To be returned in 2012. GOLD STANDARD. Is return to sovergn law, sovergn wealth. The end of fiat currency, debt promisary notes. All gov and banking and the Fed are bankrupt, the world over under martial law. We are all occupied by the private banks, under bankruptcy. Your corporate identity registered at birth is your given name, the surname and family name are owned by the Vatican. Using all 3 names is trading while bankrupt. You should only use your given name. Everytime you use all 3names together you are guilty of fraud. But we were never taught these things. Anyway look up Q-U-E-E-N-S K-O-R-A-N DOCUMENTS ON FACE BOOK has the details and more. Then look up lawfulpath.com "Silent weapons for quiet wars" a builderburg product designed to destroy us through financial constraints. NASA is a "flywheel" as in a hamster wheel. An entertainment device to funnel money through while giving the people something to watch on TV. Oh gets a whole lot more interesting. Pearl harbour, the ships were paid 100x the market price for amour plating, one round would shatter the steel like glass ! The boats were a ponsey scheme,, and had to be sunk to ensure tge funding to pay for new ones. Does anyone believe the Japanese sunk the floatilta then turned around went home then surrendered ! Monet changers is an excellent read into the corporate hijacking of the nation's. All $$, now it's not about more money, it's about killing us to hide the lies and treason. Cheers.
