Chris Hedges "American Sadism"

Please support The Sanctuary for Independent Media! For more information and to donate, visit: www.mediasanctuary.org
Author, activist, teacher and dissident Chris Hedges spoke at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY on June 27, 2021. In this talk Chris speaks about sadism, which he says:
-Now defines nearly every cultural, social and political experience in the United States.
-Is expressed in the greed of an oligarchic elite that has seen its wealth increase during the pandemic by $1.1 trillion while the country has suffered the sharpest rise in its poverty rate in more than 50 years.
-Is expressed in extra-judicial killings by police in cities such as Minneapolis.
-Is expressed in our complicity in Israel’s wholesale killing of unarmed Palestinians, the humanitarian crisis engendered by the war in Yemen and our reigns of terror in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.
-Is expressed in the torture in our prisons and black sites.
-Is expressed in the separation of children from their undocumented parents, where they are held as if they were dogs in a kennel.
Chris Hedges goes on to say that...
The historian Johan Huizinga, writing about the twilight of the Middle Ages, argued that as things fall apart sadism is embraced as a way to cope with the hostility of an indifferent universe. No longer bound to a common purpose, a ruptured society retreats into the cult of the self. It celebrates, as do corporations on Wall Street or mass culture through reality television shows, the classic traits of psychopaths: superficial charm, grandiosity and self-importance; a need for constant stimulation; a penchant for lying, deception and manipulation; and the incapacity for remorse or guilt. Get what you can, as fast as you can, before someone else gets it. This is the state of nature, the “war of all against all,” Thomas Hobbes saw as the consequence of social collapse, a world in which life becomes “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” And this sadism, as Friedrich Nietzsche understood, fuels a perverted, sadistic pleasure.the cultural and social forces that have given rise to extremism in the United States.
Meghan Marohn moderates a Q&A following the talk.

You censor too much. I took issue with a point Hedges made about men, using a highly intellectual tone and polite language. It was removed. This is shameful, frankly. If he can say what he said, why can't milder language remain in the comments?

In a "woke "age , folk are reluctant to use strong language in expressing their viewpoint .It can be very cathartic to state ones' case loudly and firmly .Desmond Morris , of "The Naked Ape " fame has apologised for his theory of the alpha male .he ,now , maintains that animals in the wild behave more like a family .There are forces in the world who serve their own interests by clinging to the concept of the alpha male to justify a cruel and savage portrayal of the human condition .@@l.w.paradis2108

oh shit the violence expressed abroad now finally comes home? yes! kill everyone that benefitted of the american culture that is born out of cowards avoid facing hardships. usa expelled or killed the only warriors they had that where willing to fight for the benefits of others and payed with their blood with a smile in a manjac crash. and now the fucking sheeps starts to cry when they realize their future. but dont dare to stand up.....in the end you get what you deserve. there is not a single us-citizen who doesnt deserves death. no matter if you are black or white, you put this on yourself by constantly kneeling down. it gets even more funny when hedges recites european scholars. they all basicly tell the same story: "stand up"! but you cant expect anything from a nation of cowards that killed in a francy their own heros.

Because before America became top dog the Russians went full on Communist, the Japanese invaded Korea and China, the Ottomans had gotten as far as Vienna before being pushed back, it's still illegal to be gay in 69 countries (most Islamic and women have virtually zero rights) and China has actual concentration camps and libya has open air slave markets right now. Even my own country the Netherlands, one of the inventors and original/oldest capitalists, is deep into neoliberalism now, so deep that our state is compromised, commiting crimes against us. It tooks decades but they succeeded in keeping the people in that capitalist/neoliberal belief, helped by nationalist/populist memories of the 70/80's when we were indeed perhaps one of the most free and social and progressive countries in the world at that moment. There is nothing left, we moved away from the German Rhineland model to the anglosaxon one shortly after that time, no leftist government since, and like the US and UK, the Netherlands has slit down the drain, and joined them. I applaud your naiveness, I was also in my twenties once. But I regret to tell you that even if the whole world watched this speech, it really wouldn't make much of a difference. Someone once said "Those who don't know their history are destined to repeat it" , but the truth is that the only thing that history has proven is that it keeps repeating itself. If knowing had any weight on the outcome of events, there would be no more wars, slavery, dictators, inequality, hunger, etc. all of which are exacerbated in present times. The only meaningful thing to learn about history, is its insight into our own human nature, that we are basically hairless chimps that are utterly incapable of handling a spoonful of power, that we lose all sense of respect, empathy and love in our pursuit of such power, and when we finally get a firm grip on a big chunk of it, we literally become the most dangerous and insatiable beast on the surface of this beautiful planet. The world we see is a reflection of who we are as a race, we are the world.

Chris had better be careful. I notice he's becoming a bit more charismatic lately. Americans are allowed to speak truth to power like this publicly as long as they are incapable of fomenting actual revolutionary acts. But once they catch on -- MLK, Robert Kennedy, Malcolm X, John Lennon -- it's a guaranteed bullet to the head.

I have done the same thing. Watched every speech and recorded it since he was doing it. Ron Paul. Michael Ruppert and so many others. It is important to have them saved as they get deleted of YT by whoever.

Definition of 'guns blazing'. What a riveting, truthful talk, spoken right from the core of truth and delivered into our very cores. Wish everyone would watch or listen to this.

I love Chris Hedges and I like how he describes his definition of Evil. So many philosophers and Religions have their own definition of Evil. For me, Evil is not wars, mass killings, corruption, pollutions, purging of land and people, racisms, rapes, and other atrocities, those are the results of Evil. Just like Trump is the result of forty years of NeoLiberalism and NeoConservatism, but the definition of Evil to me is the degradation and decay of morals and ethics. Many philosophies and spiritual beliefs see the root cause for Evil comes from desire. A hunger for Money, Power, Comfortability, Survivability can lead to hate, and demonization of others is what justifies Politicians and Elites to throw away morals and ethics to commit such heinous acts all in the name of Desire. But Chris has a point of Well. Thinking anyone outside of your family or circle can lead to Tribalism, which leads to the demonization of the other, and ultimately commit the acts of Evil's results.

Coincidentally a couple days before I discovered this speech, I had read an account of a woman who had had major surgery entailing taking out part of her liver, gall bladder and intestine. She was given Tylenol and ketamine intravenous "bomb", her pain completely uncontrolled until she begged the doctors to let her die. I thought then that our doctors are now behaving sadisticlly, and wondered how the healers have become the tormentors. If a nation can have a personality, ours has indeed become sadistic. An opoid crisis is not caused by doctors adequately treating pain, yet that is what they point to as a rationale for the barbaric and even murderous practice of medicine now. At the Cleveland Clinic they are also now giving "Tylenol bombs" for open heart surgery pain. Same for double mastectomy. The ordinary person, without power or money enough to dictate their care (most of us) life has become or can at any moment become completely unbearable by having commonplace events like a bad tooth or a broken bone or surgery inadequately treated or sadistically treated. We've entered a new Middle Ages, where, indeed, life is ever more "nasty, brutish, and short".
