Chris D'Elia Tries to Understand the Concept of Space Time

Комедия

Chris tried to figure out what "space time" means. It did not go well. He then watches a video about it with William Shatner and Neil Degrasse Tyson which doesn't help much either.

We're physics podcasters, Chris. We can explain it to you! 😂😂 You can't really explain it without understanding special Relativity which is already a mindfuck. It comes from the fact that experimental physics showed the speed of light is always the same speed no matter how fast youre moving when you measure it. For example, if you're moving at 100m/s the speed of light is not 300,000,100m/s it's actually c = 300,000,000m/s just like if you weren't moving. This means that you can write the equation for the velocity of light as c = distance / time. If c is always constant, this means that space and time must change based on what frame of reference light you're watching light move in. This means that the faster you go, to someone looking at you from the outside, you actually get flatter along the direction of motion

This is why understanding space-time is hard to do with an accurate definition. It’s much easier to understand with an analogy. The best analogy in my opinion, is to think of space time as a vertical potato.

Here we go chris, disregarding the physics and maths real quick - just real simple... you want to meet someone how do you do it. Meet me in Times Square ... ok, well ... when? Meet me at 3 o'clock ... ok, well ... where? To get on the same page you need to give them a place AND a time. Otherwise youll never meet. That coordinate you set for a meeting is a coordinate of space-time. 3 dimensional space is east-west, north-south, up-down... you can set a coordinate point in that 3 dimensional space for someone to meet you, but you'll never meet unless you add another coordinate of time ... which acts as the 4th dimension. Spacetime is what we all move through. And we all move through it at the same speed... as beings with mass we move mostly through time, and slowly through space... while a photon with zero mass moves exclusively through space and not at all through time. The closer you get to moving that speed through space (the speed of light) the slower and slower you move through time... thats called dilation, thanks Einstein.

I know this won't matter, I'm just doing it for me to see if I can type it out and such have understood it properly: Space time is the idea that time and space are fused together. Before the concept of space time, they were seen (in science) as two different conepts. Time was a vehicle for chemical reactions to take place, and space was the place in which they take place. The origin of the concept of space time, as I have understood it, comes from astronomy and the time dialation that can occur around maaaaaassive objects in space. Now this is the part I have no understanding of, and I think it's mainly theoretical, but around a black hole (a very, very, very massive thing) time will slow down, or speed up I don't even know which one, as you get closer to it. The idea then is that as the fabric of space (or just space, to naaaarrow it DOWN) bends under weight, and so does time, because of reasons. In conclusion, I also don't know shit about space time, but apparantly I liked to think I did before typing out this comment. You live and you learn.
