    Some factors change when you are selecting hooks and bait size for surf fishing ... casting out vs deployment We use 8/0 gamakatsu octopus circle hooks for everything ....smaller hooks, wider gap.... penetrate fast and better hook up ratio than thicker smaller gap hooks....but it depends on If you are going for just sharks or medium sharks, reds and tarpon all at the same time. We even got a 50lb king casting out with cut bait .....good to have a smaller thinner hook sometimes

    Great info. What are your thoughts about going barbless for easier release. I don't but thinking about it to make the releases easier/safer. Not sure if there is a bigger risk of lost fish by doing so. I don't do Sharks a lot so not enough experience with it.

    Hopefully I can catch a shark this year lol I don't really have shark specific reels, the only large spinner with a lot of line is a tarpon reel that has about 350 yds of line, I'm probably going to get spooled tho, I have two conventional that is a squall 60 ld and a senator 4/0 but I have them setup for snook and bottom fishing, the only other large spinner I have is a reel that is the exact same as a shimano stella 14k, the only thing is I have it for boat fishing with 20 lb mono

    Doondah so you use the swivel at the hook and at the end tie in to the braided line?

  • @chugginbeers

    @chugginbeers

    7 жыл бұрын

    Geoffrey Braun when using braided line, you MUST have a monofilament topping long enough to ensure your braided line is not being cut by sand or other debris on the bottom, the current will fray your line against anything it touches (very important, if you dont, reeling the bait in itself will break your line after so many hours of fishing, i use braided when cast and retrieving only ) the leader you make should have a circle hook on one end and a swivel on the other with single strand wire a bit longer than the shark you plan on catching because their rough skin can cut mono and braided line. im not sure what type of reel and rod you have but if you have the money, buy at least a 9/0 penn senator new/used on ebay or the penn site itself with a rod to match, that way you can just spool it with 100% mono and not worry about having enough mono out there, and they hold a ton of line. you will have to kayak the bait out for sure with a baitcasting reel, but with a cheap 9/0 reel or bigger, if you do hook into something bigger, your odds of landing are much greater.
