My Land Based Shark Fishing Setups (Tackle Tuesday #19)

Спорт

When shark fishing from the beach, setups can be tricky. In this video I go over my land based shark fishing setups, both the shark rod and shark reel and why I fish them.

    My shark rods were the OLD "original Gator blank" Star Rod delux 49 which are originally built as bridge rods. They are 80 lbs to 130 blanks. I used a penn 10/0, 12/0 or a Penn International 130 H reel. Always used 150 Ande. We did stand up all the way with custom fit harness and butt belt. Never a problem. Love seeing the younger guys still at it, keep up the good work.

    I only shark fish from the beach 4-5 times a year so I don't have huge money invested. But one thing I did do to my 14/0 Senators is change the drag material. I bought some carbon fiber sheets and cut out new drag washers to fit the Senator and I grease them pretty heavily with Cal's drag grease to saturate them. According to my non scientific test I gained 12 pounds of drag locked down. On a 6' unlimited class blank vertical it took 44 pounds of pressure to pull line. Just a thought as a cheap mod for anyone using Senators.

    Really helpful, thought provoking. Just getting back into fishing, mostly from beach. I am going to begin fishing for sharks off of Central Florida beaches--probably going to start at Vero. Actually looking more for medium small blacktip rather than monsters--love to eat shark. I always appreciate your insight; thank you.

    Roller guides were necessary years back when all we had was chrome guides and really bad drags, which put big friction and stress on the main line. They still have a place on rods you are going to put in a fighting chair or a rod holder, and they are easier on knots and terminal tackle that fits through them; also for stand-up saltwater trolling rods that need a minimum stripper and tip on big fish. Rollers are high maintenance, but I find people make more out that then needs be. We use a modified stand-up trolling rod. Even today, with the guides and materials we have, you are on the other end with that fish - your main line is not the only thing that is dealing with that friction and the stress. Roller guides take it out of the the rod guides and puts it on the drag; and lever drags rule!

    I am a fairly new subscriber to your channel, so I have not seen all of your videos. Do you have a video where you are casting these short rods? I used 10' surf rods just recently down in Florida and hooked up to some sharks. The rod seemed to hold well, but it was my reels' line capacity that failed on me on multiple occasions. Without kayaking bait out (Which I saw a group do), how would you cast out far enough with these short rods and let's say 6 oz and bait?

    Is 80 lb mono enough to catch a moderate shark? Going to the beach in a few weeks with the cheapest gear i could find only for the fact that i dont know what im doing so if a break or lose something it doesnt hurt the bank until im more experienced. I have shark rigs rigged up with 12/0 hooks on i think 250 lb tooth proof and around the same test barrel swivels. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Not looking to catch too big but not wanting to break the bank

    Absolutely right with the braid! Fishing off the rocks in the Caribbean I had a nice nurse hooked up. Went to grab the line with my left hand and was timing the wave so I could yank him up on the rock. Shark was tired and done but as I pulled the line my braid hit the rock and you right. Game over. Line cut and off he went for another day! But on the other hand I blasted a 7 ft nurse with same setup and I was able to get him in close to the rocks. No way I could pull him up by myself. So I said thanks for the good fight. And cut the line! Thanks for your video.

    @fireriver61047 жыл бұрын

    Yeah braid is definetly a no when fishing snaggy rivers becaise fish scrape your line on rocks and move into snags. Mono is super abrasion resistant. When fishing a river or a beach, any rocky areas I would definitly use mono. I've had time where I use braid and had a big carp on and it swam around a rock and completely snapped my line. When I caught big fish on mono, my line came out super abraided and beat up, but it still held up. Braid and mono both have there ups and downs, but for most types of fishing, mono is my favorite.

  • @randyschott494
    @randyschott4947 жыл бұрын

    IDK if we're your from, y'all do this but our beaches don't have structure so we use all braid with a top shot for about 100 yrds of mono it's better that using 1 solid type you have the stretch of mono but the capacity and strength of braid

    la la go fast car that takes up a lot of space on the spool, I run a Penn 3/0 senator which is only a bit larger than the 309. For medium sharks you should do fine with 65lb braid backing, and about a 200 yard topshot of 50-80lb line,

    the theory of mono makes sense never thought of it that way will draging it through the the water but for the abrasion resistance you run braid under the mono so the braid doesn't get every day wear so I can last a whole season. the only problem with mono is every time it stretches it becomes weaker where that's not the case with braid that's why personally I run 1000+ yards of braid under 600ish yards of mono. at the end of the day it comes down to putting sharks on the beach doesn't matter how you get there

  • @LandsharkOutdoors

    @LandsharkOutdoors

    7 жыл бұрын

    Exactly both ways work. If I had the option of going braid vs mono, I would run braid, but I'm not taking the risk with the whole reef coming into play. Braid gives you better hooksets, cuts through the water and line capacity, but it's no match for mono around structure.

    @@gvgconnor965 or less, depends on the diameter, not the strengh. but I wouldn't fish 150lb, even 200 can break on high drag and I fish just the amount I don't get pulled into the water, better braid backing and 250-300lb mono, but i have to mention that us made lines usually hold much more than they are rated, I fish german made line so my 265 probably holds less than some american 250

  • @maxschmidt9461

    @maxschmidt9461

    3 жыл бұрын

    the most I ever used were 130lb, I could squeeze out more but then I have to be tied to a truck or need some buddies holding me, by my self 130lb is the border. And don't forget the waterdrag and how much you're line holds after being abraided, if you are like me and willing to be able to land even an 20 footer, I'd always pick my everol 20/0 and spool it with either 500lb or 300lb(depending on structure and how long I need to drop my baits) hollowcore and 800lb or 1000lb as snagleader, you can go mono too but I want to feel the fish without stretch, by the way, I use 50-80lb rods and fight smaller fish with the rod, for big ones I point the rod down, that's the only way to physically withstand this drag settings, even a rod made to handle such drags is useless cause it put's an lever against you, the only use for heavy rods is when using the gunnel of a boat

    Yea I'm not gonna yak it out but I would most likely take out a balloon and go to the inlet and let it flow out with the current and the only sharks I would really catch would be nurse sharks, blacktips, and the occasional bull

    Nurses and blacktips you'd be alright as long as you don't feed out too much line. Hook into a nice bull and you might end up with no line on your reel! haha

    I've caught 5ft bull shark with 4/0 on 80lb braid, pretty good fight but nothing too crazy.

    No doubt you can land a 5ft bull on that setup, creep into the 7-8ft plus range tho and chances are you're going to be in trouble

    Still waiting for my wife to understand, got her an awesome setup for reds and blacks, , but sharks , blacktips(5 foot or better) , or whatever she hasn’t experienced. I set it up right but she hasn’t had that pull yet. I literally can’t wait to she what she does

    Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup kzread.infoUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

    hate to be this guy but your theory on roller guides is a good thought but doesn't work like that. rollers will cause you to loose fish it's old technology most great rod builders recommend to not have them as under a long fight with a shark they will lock up and pop your line. also rctbxxh 50-130 is good blank alot of shark fishing builders use them because there hard to break and have an amazing feel if u get a chance give one a try

    Roller guides can lock up if a bearing is seized. In a decade of fishing with them , this has never happened to me.
