Why is try-before-you-buy suggested for everything except the most important thing in life: who you marry. I lived with my girlfriend once and it saved me from marrying someone who would have destroyed my life. When it didn't work I moved out and moved on lost NOTHING. But of you marry and it ends in divorce you lose everything. Shacking up can save u many headaches.

So does premarital counseling and a prenuptial/postnuptial. Not picking. Ive only ever seen marriages growing up and so many of them would have been less of a bullet to the behind had they signed those documents and went to a counselor outside of the family. Im glad you made it out the way you did tho. So many of my friends are about to get burned bcuz of shacking. It's too late for them. Breaks my heart.

The Church says you shouldn't live together before marriage, but I disagree. It was thru cohabiting that I saw who my significant other really was. You can't get to know someone well until you've lived with them. I speak by experience. Cohabiting saved me from making the wrong decision to marry someone who would have destroyed my life. When it wasn't working I packed up and left. I lost NOTHING.

There is not just one right way for people to live. Its not one size fits all! People are different with different beliefs, practices, etc. What's right for one person may not be right for another. Shacking up works for some, but not for others. The same thing with marriage. Stop telling people there is only one right way to do things. I've tried to do things 'the right way' and I lost everything.

Eh I'm going to have to disagree to an extent, their's a difference between a person with an alternative life style and someone who's self destructive. I'm single and bouncing around from bed to bed yet I'm on step 3 but a few years ago I was in a committed relationship and in serious financial trouble. The things he mentioned are trends not absolutes but he is right though you have to make good choices or you're going to be in rough shape.

I haven't done so great on the relationship side, either but I am doing well financially. But if I actually was smarter about my relationships and found a good, financially responsible partner, I would be doing even better--probably a lot better. Most single divorced/people have very little wealth compared to people who marry and stay marry. Everyone loves to point out the exceptions--I am one, too, to a degree--but they are just that--exceptions. It also depends on your age. If you're 20s or early 30s and still bed hopping, you might be able to be ok. But when people get to their 40s, those who don't fit the patterns Dave is talking about are much less likely to be doing well financially. Just one example. If you're hopping from bed to bed, eventually the birth control is gonna fail and the gal is going to want to keep the baby--you're now on the hook for child support.

I rarely disagree with Dave, but I don't see how people living together before marriage is a bad thing. it's fiscally responsible to share expenses. and while being married is a big deal, it's not the end all be all. not everyone wants to get married and mathematically it's not even possible. I put sex and lust in another category. just because someone cheats on a significant other has no correlation to them stealing from a company. plenty of married parents steal for a variety of reasons. and if you're married to someone you obviously live with them, which can be challenging, so how can having a "trial run" lead to a divorce. I don't see those dots connecting

You should check the stats in your country for divorce among couples that live together before marriage VS those that don't, as well as the financial position of those that live together before marriage VS those that don't. I don't know what country you are from, but would be interested to hear your findings.

I no longer have a computer, just a couple hours per week at library, so don't have time to check that. I live in America, and I think one of the reasons people get divorced is they get married for the wrong reasons, such as familial or societal pressure. if you get married make sure it's for the right reasons

Truth!... I once heard a speaker tell the story of a pastor friend who told him, in 20 years of pastoring he never had one couple divorce where both people had these 3 qualities, generous, forgiving, and cooperative. It's interesting to note that these marriages weren't just enduring but happy, which I think is too often overlooked when talking about divorce and marriage. Marriages hopefully don't just last but are happy too... I don't know how you could prove that, but regardless it is interesting food for thought... Sorry to hear about your interwweb situation, holding out hope for your brighter tomorrow...

Victor Funk Forty percent of couples who live together will end their relationships before marriage. marriages that are preceded by living together have 50 percent higher disruption rates than marriage without premarital cohabitation -Journal of Marriage and the Family. Yale University, Columbia University and the Institute for Resource Development at Westinghouse say 80% higher divorce rate of women who cohabited. As cohabitation as increased, the divorce rate has also increased. The Universities of Chicago and Michigan reported that those who cohabit before marriage have substantially higher divorce rates than those who do not; the recorded differentials range from 50 to 100 percent. Statistics report that 60 percent of couples who live together will not go on to get married either because they break up (39 percent) or just continue to live together (21 percent). Such evidence suggests that differences in why people are cohabiting may be driving some of the associations between cohabitation and poorer relationship outcomes. The inertia effect is problematic when it drives a couple that would otherwise not have married, to become married. -Psychology Today. researcher at the University of Virginia found that the brains of spouses responded differently to stress than the brains of living-together couples. Basically it seems on the surface that cohabitation causes divorce, but if you look closely cohabitation is an indicator that divorce will happen because they shouldn't be getting married in the first place and cohabitation is a symptom of different problems.
