    Absolutely love Peter’s strong stance on minerality. It’s informed positions like this that elevates conversation around a nebulous topic like tasting wine that weeds out some of the BS. I hope his words draw some critics in the comments! While I’ve never had a riesling with as much bottle age as you’re all enjoying there Fox Run is the first riesling I’ve ever tasted and I’m always happy to drink it and recommend it. -Chris

    The point you make about terms like saline being used to describe wines in an analog or approachable way is spot on. Sometimes the biggest struggle is translating tase to words especially when talking to a consumer who hasn't got the full vocabulary of wine tasting terms in their head! Really interesting chat about minerality!

    Fascinating that we still don´t really know what the fuck actually makes a wine tastes good. I like the word "minerality" because it is kind of vague and so it is open for further discussion about the wine, but also allows guys like me to talk about the wine even if you can not pin point the exact taste. I like that you highlight important words, keep it up and keep more videos coming!=)

    The problem is they’re very rare here. That said, my good friend and fellow master of wine blind tasted me on a 2014 vintage sparking wine from England. I thought that it was either a very good nonvintage or a vintage having some years of bottle age to account for the toasty notes. I wasn’t surprised to see that it was English. Such a session would be a paid masterclass taking place either in London or at an English winery/vineyard.

    I think Peter meant some producers are calling their 100% Riesling Wine by another name “White wine” in the hope of attracting a larger market of consumers. At least, that’s my take on it and what I have noticed on bottles from the Finger Lakes. Maybe I’ll be able to reach him for a response.

  • @robertburgess5123

    @robertburgess5123

    Thank you, both for the reply and for the excellent video! Interesting that markets are so different. Here (Sweden), I believe Riesling is a fairly well-known and loved grape. Primarily Riesling from Germany and other European countries but according to the sales statistics from Systembolaget(*) even when it comes to wines from the US - the most sold white wine in bottles happens to be a Riesling (specifically Kung Fu Girl Riesling from Washington State). Wines from the Finger Lakes are extremely rare here, so I was delighted to see Oscar (in the previous video) mentioning Sweden as one of the countries they will start exporting to. When marketing Riesling here, I believe they would do themselves a huge disservice not calling their Riesling Riesling. (*) The Swedish government-owned liquor store chain with the only retail stores allowed to sell alcoholic beverages in Sweden.

    @bernadettewroblak9371

    Kung Fu Girl is very popular here today but it doesn’t taste like a classic Riesling whereas many of the Finger Lake wines do. Approximately how much is the Kung Fu Girl in Sweden?

  • @robertburgess5123

    @robertburgess5123

    2 жыл бұрын

    Then I really want to try some Finger Lake wines as I assume I would appreciate them more than I do Kung Fu Girl. Kung Fu Girl is fairly cheap here even though it is imported from the US; a bottle costs about US $16 at Systembolaget. It seems Systembolaget sold a bit over 200 000 bottles of Kung Fu Girl last year, so I guess the importer got some volume discount.

    There are some ambiguous expressions for amateur. I think these are minerals(white or red), savory(red) and oxidative(especially for champagne), etc.. If the circumstance allows, please explain some vague words on youtube. I always appreciate your video. Thanks!

    Mineral- think of the smell of wet stones just as a rain falls. Savory is something not sweet and fruity. Oxidative for Champagne ranges from toasty (good) to having notes of varnish (less good).

    사실 토양의 성분이 물에 용해되 포도나무 뿌리에서 삼투현상으로 전달되는 일반적인 원리인데, 당연히 토양성분이 물에 의해 포도나무로 전달될꺼라는 생각의 맹점을 집어 주신것 같네요. 예를들어, 토양에 없는 성분이라도 물에 이미 녹아있는 무기염류가 있다면 포도나무가 그 미네랄을 흡수할 수 있는 것처럼 관개가 허용되면 실질적으로 물을 주는 와인메이커의 역량이 반영된다는 이야기인것 같습니다.

    경험적으로 밭의 입지조건 (토양, 배수 기타 등등)이 와인의 품질에 영향을 준다는 것은 알려져 있었지만 토양의 성분이 그대로 와인에 반영되는가에 대해서는 많은 다른 견해들이 있습니다. 일례로 프랑스 과학자 제라르 세갱(Gerard Seguin)은 보르도 지방의 토양 성분과 와인 성분을 수집 조사했습니다만, 토양의 성분비와 와인성분비간에 유의할만한 연관관계를 찾을 수 없다고 결론 내렸습니다.
