Chinese Plug-In Mosquito (and Human) Zapper

Ғылым және технология

Another deadly dangerous insect (and people) killing device is here. Test, teardown and schematic of a cheap Chinese plug-in fly zapper (mosquito killer) from Ebay for just $1.60 including shipping. You can very easily touch the high voltage grid. The protective bars have very big gaps and they are very soft The protective cover comes off almost instantly. This can zap you even when unplugged, because the capacitors have no discharging resistors. There's also no fuse. The capacitors rated for 400V run at 620V. The LEDs should be ultraviolet (UV), but they are blue. I'm not sure this is going to attract any insect. But at least, it didn't blow up :).

    BigCliveLive tore down two of these things. The circuit in this bugzapper resembles the first one he tore down, in that it uses a four-capacitor multiplier. However in the one BigClive tore down the capacitors in the multiplier all had the same capacity but were rated for different voltages, resulting in a pretty spectacular explosion.

    I have one of these and it does work well in small rooms. I have a small bathroom/shower and mosquitoes are often attracted to it because there is standing water there (U-traps and such). So eventually the mosquito will go into that room, and being so close, the trap is mostly effective. It has killed over 30 of them so far (I take many precautions to keep mosquitoes out of where I live, so that is a significant number).

    This is interesting... I happen to have a small photocell night lamp that is exactly the same as this, but with some white LEDs inside, a small photocell where the switch would be, an added plastic cover and different color scheme. It's pretty neat, only turns on when there is no light. It seems like they reused the casing, not surprising since it's China.

  • @theirisheditor

    Seems like they reused an instruction from a tube version, i.e. "Prolong fluorescent tube de service life". I also wonder if the factory got the 630v capacitor for the LED mixed up with 400v capacitor for the 620v stage of the voltage doubler. As for effectiveness, it would be interesting to try out, e.g. put it in a dry sheltered area outside, leave to run for an hour when there's mosquitoes about and then check whether any got zapped.

  • @DiodeGoneWild

    @DiodeGoneWild

    Yes, the manual is a horrible mixture of an old recycled text and a terrible google translation. The multiplier should have had the 630V capacitors (there's 620V) and the dropper should have had the 400V one (there's only 310V). I will test it, but I believe that insect is sensitive mostly to 350nm UV, not 455nm blue.

    While I agree with other points, what's wrong with 1/8W 1MOhm resistor? Mains will heat it for almost 0.05W, which is less than a half of it's power rating, and if it isn't defective, it will not short unless exposed to elements. And if we expose such device to the elements, MOhm resistor will likely be amongst last things to fail.

  • @DiodeGoneWild

    @DiodeGoneWild

    7 жыл бұрын

    The power rating is OK, but resistors do also have a maximum voltage rating. In high-resistance resistors, the power dissipation can still be well below maximum, while the maximum voltage is exceeded. The 1/8 W resistors are usually rated just 200V and the 1/4 W ones are 250V. The peak value voltage of 220Vac mains is 310V (and for 240Vac mains it is 340V). So for 220-240V mains you have to use at least 1/2 W resistors, those tend to be rated for 350V.

  • @Norzel7

    @Norzel7

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well, resistor voltage rating is not something i heard about before. I mean, i knew that high voltage can "convince" materials into better conductivity by means of ionisation, but 200V? And datasheets agree. 200V working, 400 max overload and dielectric withstanding for 1/8W. Damn, i think they should've told this to me at colledge D:

  • @BenjaminEsposti

    @BenjaminEsposti

    7 жыл бұрын

    Norzel7 Yeah, unless we are talking about high resistance resistors like this one, usually the resistor voltage rating doesn't matter so much. (Otherwise, if too high a voltage is put across the resistor, it will dissipate too much power and burn up anyways. Say a 100 ohm 1W resistor on mains voltage, as an example. XDDD)

  • @johnconrad5487
