Mosquito Zapper with absurd manual - test, teardown & improvements

Ғылым және технология

Today I tested an electric insect zapper from LIDL supermarket. Its nonsensical manual calls it both a zapper and a repeller (two completely different things) and also confuses UVA light with blue light. This zapper has 4 UV LEDs, a high voltage grid and a twilight sensor. I've reverse engineered its schematic and then successfully improved it.

    I've seen a lot of products that have both real UV LEDs and also bright blue LEDs to let humans know not to look at it and to let people know that it is on. Of course some of them cheat and don't have any UV at all but most of the ones I've seen have both. And a lot of the fancy new UVC leds are double dye.... and have both in the same package as a safety feature. I've been ordering and experimenting with a lot of uvcc LEDs over the last few years since the technology is becoming more prevalent and maturing. It's really cool and exciting and they just keep getting more and more powerful.

    Turborider, 1 A fuse is given for the case when the 430k bleeder resistor or the capacitors shorts out. 200mA fuse would blow up immediately because the initial inrush current is huge due to the capacitors in the circuit.

OMG! One suggestion for product reviews: what about solar panels and MPP-Tracker for solar panels (max power point)? I think its an interesting technology and i bought a few solar panels recently to test them. Variying from 0.5W up to 50W Peak power. In fact they mostly reach 70% in best sunlight conditions. Some chinese cheap ones only reach 30 - 50% but they are getting cheaper and cheaper. you get 1W/peak for less than 1 Eur nowadays :-)

    DiodeGoneWild One suggestion to make it even more power efficient, for the mode that the UV LEDs are on; Currently the four UV LEDs are in series. What if we place them in 2 parallel branches, 2 LEDs in each branch. The 2 branches should have opposite polarity so that in one half cycle the LEDs of one branch are on and the LEDs of the other branch are off, and the opposite happening in the other half cycle. The Zener and 1N4007 should also be omitted. I guess this way the voltage drop capacitor (2200nF) will help more in decreasing power dissipation (For the mode that the UV LEDs are on).

  • @zwz.zdenek

    @zwz.zdenek

    2 жыл бұрын

    That would take some load off the Zener, but it would also make the efficiency of the capacitive dropper worse, so the only good way is still a full bridge rectifier.

  • @a000ab

    @a000ab

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@zwz.zdenek How does it worsen the efficiency of the capacitive dropper? With my suggestion, for when the NPN transistor (and hence the UV diodes) is off, no current passes through the capacitive dropper at all. Just when the NPN transistor turns on current passes through it.

    The new modification still shorts the LEDs. How it saves power ?

  • @DiodeGoneWild

    @DiodeGoneWild

    6 жыл бұрын

    Originally it didn't short the LEDs. Now it does. A capacitive dropper supplies a constant current, so the higher is the voltage drop of the load, the more real power it draws. If the load is shorted, its voltage drop is zero. Then the capacitor only draws a capacitive power, not a real power. Some power is still dissipated in the discharging resistors and in the inrush resistor, but the total power is less, because the output of the dropper has nearly zero voltage (just the voltage drop of the transistor, lets say 1V). Simply said, by shorting the LEDs out, the real part of the power decreases. Just the capacitive power remains, but it's not shown by the wattmeter and you don't pay for it.

    I've ask him before but there was no reply. He doesn't repond much to responses.

    It's this wattmeter: danyk.cz/wmetr_en.html Basically a power to voltage converter that allows you to display the measured power using a voltmeter. I've added a second, 10x more sensitive range to it by adding a 3.6 ohm resistor in series with the 0.4ohm one. That's it :).

    Would the PNP go bang with that mod?

    It didn't yet and I believe it shouldn't even in the future. The average current through the transistor when it's on (LEDs off) is only about 8mA and the voltage when it's off (LEDs on) is limited by the zener and the LEDs.
