5 Electric Shock Toys from China

Ғылым және технология

Today, let's have fun with yet another collection of dodgy Chinese toys that give people electric shocks as a questionable kind of prank. Let's also take a look inside, see how does it work, reverse engineer the schematic and do some measurements using my multimeter and oscilloscopes. All of those electric shock gadgets are very cheap on Ebay, about 1 - 3 USD.

In the 70s I built such device on a box with electrodes on the edges. It was a simple circuit from a magazine. Just one small transistor, a tiny transformer and a couple of resistors and capacitors connected to a 9v battery. I taped a note "Do Not Touch" on the box and left on my work desk. Those who could not resist got a nice shock.

When I was almost 13, I had a big heavy wall wart (the kind with a 60hz iron core transformer) that lost its power cord. I had the 'bright' idea of removing the rectifier diodes and briefly attaching a 1.5 v battery to the 12v side. Basically the same principle as this circuit, except instead of 83 flyback pulses per second, there is just one MASSIVE one when the battery is disconnected. I can't recommend trying to give anybody a shock with this circuit. The 120vac plug would deliver a high voltage pulse which had no problem flashing over a millimeter gap (and would go several mm with sharp electrodes.) The peak current was somewhere north of .1ampere (I didn't use an oscilloscope, just a neon pilot light with resistors in parallel to measure the current). A bite from that monster would make your whole arm jump. Needless to say, I learned pretty quickly to keep my hands away from the output.

How are you measuring high voltages with a scope safely? Do you *have* to use a diff probe, or can you get away with just leaving the scope floating, or, in my case, having my USB scope isolated on my laptop running on battery power, and possibly further isolated with a USB isolator? I'm brand new to electronics, so I'd love to know, because I'd really love to measure ripple on switching power supplies, but do so without killing myself, or a computer or oscilloscope I can't afford to replace. Thanks in advance! EDIT: Regarding the transistor on time, I wonder if it's staying on because it's effectively feeding into a massive inductor, and is resisting the change in voltage, hence keeping the transistor on longer. I dunno, I'm an idiot, so that's likely not how it works.

They're probably using a ferrite core here since the transistor has a simple fixed duty cycle. They're only after a short high voltage pulse. If it were iron, they would have to actually modulate the pulse width rather than rely on the transformer to limit the shock current since iron would build a much stronger field than ferrite.
