5 Electric Shock Toys from China
Ғылым және технология
Today, let's have fun with yet another collection of dodgy Chinese toys that give people electric shocks as a questionable kind of prank. Let's also take a look inside, see how does it work, reverse engineer the schematic and do some measurements using my multimeter and oscilloscopes. All of those electric shock gadgets are very cheap on Ebay, about 1 - 3 USD.

WOW. I've never seen anyone else use a large nail as a screwdriver, bravo! Memories of being a completely broke 8yo with no allowance until I got my first job at 18yo come flooding right back. No tools, I just used whatever I could find! :D
The CE sign on some of the packing is a nice attention to detail :)

15:50 That's a pretty obedient cat.

I remember some shock "chewing gum" we used to buy on field trips. Then our friends were coming and saying:"You want a chewing gum?" And when you pull you get shock. Some moments will never be forgotten.
Finally, you're taking a look at a "FLESHlight"

Like "Instant Casettes" in Spaceballs.
In the 70s I built such device on a box with electrodes on the edges. It was a simple circuit from a magazine. Just one small transistor, a tiny transformer and a couple of resistors and capacitors connected to a 9v battery. I taped a note "Do Not Touch" on the box and left on my work desk. Those who could not resist got a nice shock.
I almost always learn something from your videos. Thank you!
6:23 now we can say that you "nailed" it
When I was almost 13, I had a big heavy wall wart (the kind with a 60hz iron core transformer) that lost its power cord. I had the 'bright' idea of removing the rectifier diodes and briefly attaching a 1.5 v battery to the 12v side. Basically the same principle as this circuit, except instead of 83 flyback pulses per second, there is just one MASSIVE one when the battery is disconnected. I can't recommend trying to give anybody a shock with this circuit. The 120vac plug would deliver a high voltage pulse which had no problem flashing over a millimeter gap (and would go several mm with sharp electrodes.) The peak current was somewhere north of .1ampere (I didn't use an oscilloscope, just a neon pilot light with resistors in parallel to measure the current). A bite from that monster would make your whole arm jump. Needless to say, I learned pretty quickly to keep my hands away from the output.

Awsome review, thank you.
Oooh, the black case of that multimeter looks gorgeous!!!
I love the fact you use a nail to unscrew the screws and as a pointer :D You don't even call attention to it till after you're editing LOL
00:54 - ElectroBOOM jealous.
oh i am so looking forward to your next couple of videos! and why did you switch back to 720p?
I've always wondered those bloody toys worked.. Thanks for the teardown.. Didn't dare doing it myself.
I love this
I've used a screw driver as a nail, never thinking I could reverse the idea. :)
I think we have to make you an honorary Australian mate, saying "Bloody!" like that!
Can you show us how you draw out your schematics from start to finish? Please. And Thankyou.
The red tactile button type from China usually has lower actuation force than the black. Probably they want it to first light up when you squeeze it across, but when you accidentally press harder, shock you.
Hahaha that nail. I would never have seen it if he hadn't said it
2:37 Skrrjuuuuuu
22:15 you may have "purchased" some shoplifted stuff. Usually it goes off before you check-out or the detector at the exit shouts the alarm.

How are you measuring high voltages with a scope safely? Do you *have* to use a diff probe, or can you get away with just leaving the scope floating, or, in my case, having my USB scope isolated on my laptop running on battery power, and possibly further isolated with a USB isolator? I'm brand new to electronics, so I'd love to know, because I'd really love to measure ripple on switching power supplies, but do so without killing myself, or a computer or oscilloscope I can't afford to replace. Thanks in advance! EDIT: Regarding the transistor on time, I wonder if it's staying on because it's effectively feeding into a massive inductor, and is resisting the change in voltage, hence keeping the transistor on longer. I dunno, I'm an idiot, so that's likely not how it works.
Pocket medical resusciter , to revive heart attack people 😂
10:36 - as he presses the shock button, the image goes black for a while... Is this an editing mistake or is the device messing with the camera?
Greetings from Brazil to everyone. What did we learn today? That everything in China is a shock !!!! 15:18 the cat assistant appeared. Very good. Congratulations. Success.
Grabbed a nail to take it apart. They must work lol!
This turned to a math lesson
That "Shock" game and the 0 - 3 Sad Onions remind me of Ashens
Please do the conversion of the 24V 10A 240W power supply or similar :-)
Hello, great videos, and funny as well. What makes the shock ? Just 3 mA or there is a high voltage generated by the transforrrrrrrmerrrrrrrrrrr?? !!
If i want to connect this circuit with other circuit to control it work by 3.7 v what i will need ..!??
I am shocked :)
Shocking stuff... :P
I can see that you have some kind of post-soviet oscilloscope. I suppose it's analog?
I wonder what would happen if you power it with to high voltage ?

Thanks :). This is probably because I'm on the left side of the camera... But I don't notice it while editing, my laptop has only a mono speaker.
the 2nd shock toy's picture is actually from a chinese anime kind of childrens show called pleasant goat and big big wolf
How many Volts is the shock?
Bro bro what's the circuit of that chep used
how much can that thing push if you use alkalines instead?
reminds me of a digital camera i had that developed a fault, The body of the camera would give you a shock when taking a picture and i mean a serious shock from a fully charge flash capacitor it was enough to send your hand into spasm lol
Bloody helll
11:18 Big Smoke: did you said *number five?*
Gave like without actually watching the video
take away a curiosity from me. please. according to you. how many volts schok. 50?
the marker could have been a good prank unless it said on it "shock marker"
I love your voice. I like your video. Best of Luck.
We Miss u bro :'3
They actually sell them here in America, I bought one in Florida and then immediately lost the thing
Soon, you'll be able to make "Top 10 electro shocking toys from China"
i dont understand how the tape measure one isnt always energising the coil...it conducts through the spring?
@DiodeGoneWild
5 жыл бұрын
The "end of the measure tape" only touches the battery when you pull it. Yes, the spring works as s conductor.
What that little chip does?
Very funny hand and man drawing.
Keep going,full support from me
I really want to know who created the trend of toys like this.
They're probably using a ferrite core here since the transistor has a simple fixed duty cycle. They're only after a short high voltage pulse. If it were iron, they would have to actually modulate the pulse width rather than rely on the transformer to limit the shock current since iron would build a much stronger field than ferrite.
funniest thing is that the nail worked like a screwdriver
