Power Extension Load Test

Ғылым және технология

Skip to the actual test: 3:04
Today I made an (over)load test of the dodgy power extension from the last video. Most power strips may cause a fire when overloaded, but some are risky even when loaded within their rating.

Smoky the bear power supply in truth. Considering that the amount of copper in that cable was probably under 20c as scrap metal, it is amazing it actually held up under 40A for so long. Normally that kind of cable will blow open nearly instantly at around 10A.

Plenty of older linear supplies can do that, and server blade supplies can do 12V at 100A each, with 2 in any blade server chassis, though they are not too adjustable voltage or current wise.

I love your videos, you do a good job going through the theory and making the experiments fun. I really hope you are doing these in a well ventilated area however. The carcinogens in burning plastic are very abundant, even touching it with bare hands after is a really bad idea. It won't kill you now, but it will long term.

OK so my house has two types of currents 220v and 380v (because I'm European) and our 220v (which is for the house) has issues with the fuse box, as soon as you plug in a fridge or a computer to a outlet the fuse box turns every thing off, so we have to get it fixed, but like I said we have two currents and 2 fuse boxes completely separate from each other, (the 380v current is for our electric gate and wood furnace) the 380v has a working plug when the 220v turns off the 380v stays on because its separate, so my idea was to daisy chain power supplies from the basement (where the 380v fuse box and plug is) to upstairs to be able to charge our phones and dewalt batteries (the dewalt batteries we use for their torches) so my question is is it safe to daisychain powers extendors?

Sorry to disappoint you but most of houses breakers are designed to handle 15A continuously except for kitchen oven breaker and clothes driers. I don't think some will used extension cables to withdraw more than 15A in normal room in the house with a breaker destined to trigger at 15A load. It is just my critical thinking of the subject, however that doesn't mean that you can use any kind of extension cable with thin core in it.

My confidence in Chinese extension cords has actually gone up after this, it really took quite a lot of current to get this thing to fail short. 8 amps at the intended voltage of 220V (China's voltage) is 1760 VA, which, assuming they meant 800VA at 220V, is more than double the rating.
