Chinese CS/LS2: A Modern Bullpup SMG with no Redeeming Qualities

/ forgottenweapons
Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
This the fairly modern Chinese CS/LS2 - the 9mm Parabellum export model of the 5.8mm QCW-05 submachine gun. It takes most of its design cues form the QBZ-95 rifle, as you can see form the grip layout. It is a bullpup, with a right-ride ejection port that cannot be swapped. It is a bullpup style design, with the magazine behind the trigger, and it fires from an open bolt with both semiautomatic and full auto selector options.
The receiver is made of aluminum, contributing to a quite light gun. The bolt is also relatively light, resulting in a high cyclic rate and more felt recoil than many 9mm SMGs. The bolt is slamming into the rear of the receiver on each shot, which causes a lot of movement in the gun while shooting. The iron sights are a removable option on an integral pica tinny rail, which is a good thing - they are awful. The same minuscule rear aperture that the QBZ rifle has. The suppressor is not particularly efficient.
I have no prejudice against Chinese small arms - Chinese AKs were/are extremely well made. But this modern bullpup family is really pretty mediocre in all its forms.
Many thanks to Movie Armaments Group in Toronto for the opportunity to showcase their AR-10 rifles for you! Check them out on Instagram to see many of the guns in their extensive collection:

As a matter of fact...This guy uses the "Wrong Ammo", this submachine gun is not actually designed to use 9mm Para Bellum, it is actually applied with a specially designed subsonic 9mm ammo. Based on a weapons magazine in China, they said that subsonic ammo will make the noise sounds like "using a pencil to punch holes on a paper".

  • @Bialy_1

    @Bialy_1

@@NailKingTJ With that logic every submachine gun should be using subsonic ammo... as it have less recoil and any gun with that ammo will be more accurate. Also "9×19mm Parabellum" have nothing to do with "not subsonic", you just using less propellant and making your ammo silent but much weaker. So in your theory you need crapy ammo for this crapy gun and in the end its somehow decent combination? heh

But yes, many AMD chips for global markets are made in China with western quality control. However, AMD is moving it's manufacturing to TSMC in Taiwan so not China. It's what I was thinking of when I read the title! Of all the Engineer PDWs, it's the one I use and like the least. Every other PDW (maybe aside the Grozas, there's something about them in the game that just doesn't float my boat) is reliable, or serviceable at worst. Little ol' JS2, though, has not gotten more than 20 kills with me. Maybe it's the ridiculously high muzzle climb (it skyrockets upwards and to the right, IIRC) paired with the high fire rate, which guarantees that I'm missing my target at quickly as possible even at medium range for a PDW. :/

That explains why this gun exists, it's still bad but they wanted a PDW that could pierce soft body armor and decided to make a Chinese ghetto P90 using the same pattern they used to make their intermediate riffles. Dear China, you suck, but I will tell you how to fix this crap gun, it needs an RPM limiter to bring it down to sub 700RPM, that system will likely be able to feed a recoil counter system, or just use more springs, I heard you were running Quad stacked mags and that is horrifying, swap to drums. Suppressors are going to make this thing even more shit, don't do it, you don't even have subsonic ammo. If you want a noise reduction device set up a slightly longer barrel assembly than you need and put a mini can with a pair of baffles that cause the interior portion of the can to revolve in two different directions inside the can under gas pressure with vent ports in an x pattern on the outside of the can, the can needs a rotation lock so that when it gets jammed up from gunk the gyroscopic system can't fuck up your accuracy. Refitting this gun for all of those systems would be maybe a fifth the cost of each gun in a new rear housing to fit a new limiter system and the muzzle device/barrels.

You can't really beat an open bolt design when it comes to simplicity and cost of manufacture. Sure it comes with some disadvantages but so does every other option. A high fire rate SMG is not designed for accuracy or long distances. It's designed to put a lot of lead into the air between you and the perps at short, often indoors distances. Something like this will do that and do it on the cheap. As for reliability some of the most reliable SMG's are open bolt blowback designs. The advantage they have is their simplicity. The disadvantage is that the open bolt tends to invite dust and debris into the mechanism. The simplicity however allows for very loose tolerances which means a gun can still work with a lot of crud in the works. Having said all that I have to admit that I have no idea about the reliability of this particular SMG. If you start looking at guns around the world it's quite surprising that there are so many unreliable guns that not only made it into production, but even got adapted by military forces.

well bullpup can give you longer barrel without prolonging whole weapon - but then if prolongation of a barrel comes at a cost, of well, basic weapon's functionality, then question arise if they really should have done that. and yeah P90 beats this thing on probably every level...... ok maybe not every - if this thing's magazine works properly all the time then there would be at least this advantage.... (P90 had issues with bullet's jamming on rotation part of their magazine)

Aneudy Sanchez, it also reminded me of the P90. If only it didn't have that horrible magazine sticking out! With a horizontal one, it would at least be nicely compact - and more expensive, complex and unreliable, I guess.

Chinese went bullpup with everything, even LMG (type 95), which has asymmetric drum mag. They even made their light rifle and pistol/SMG ammo the same bore size (kinda like Soviets did in the 1930s).

Sound depends on the ammo also, you can get an MP5 so quiet with subsonics that you only hear the bolt and impact.

Sound suppression works best on closed bolt weapons but with five five tuning and the right sub sonic ammo you can get a truly quiet rifle. I saw an Ak made so quiet the machinery of the cycling bolt made more noise. It was like a loud sewing machine.

@Zach cash Subsonic ammo is rarely used at long range. The primary use is sentry take out. The last 20 feet is the most dangerous part. Well placed 9mm subsonic ammo performs quite well at that range.

I think that if someone jumped up and unloaded that thing in my direction, I'd be pretty startled at least. The jiggly effect would likely give it good area coverage, for when you just have to put a bullet in everything all at once. Seems like it would be good indoors and in trenches, though I think I would immediately cut a piece of gel boot insole for damping the bolt. Then I would rub some dirt on the threads of them sight rail bolts to take up some of that clearance. It also seemed like you were not using subsonic rounds with that suppressor. That could be causing a lot of the trouble. At least it doesn't have a drum magazine. :P I suspect that the ideal use for this would be mounting it on low-value robots and drones. The scatter, ROF and smallness are good features for communications lag and hit-and-run attacks within battery time limits.

In terms of that rubbish iron sight block, CS/LS2 spotted in Chinese police force hands often mounted with other sights: red dots, EOT552 and etc. And in recent years, they're moving away from all those bullpup chassis and embracing the more conventional designs. Rumour has it that they will debut the new standard issue AR model this year.
