Both are great but I'd take the PPSH-41. More powerful caliber, more robust and super simple. Also a more comfortable stock. Fun fact: Germany actually attempted to copy the PPSH because troops liked it so much

For penetration is PPSH-41, but 9mm have HP, JHP(ammo that makes bigger wound than FMJ without kevlar or any other body armor). I think that MP-40 is compact, FA controlable and lighter. PPSH-41 have high rate of fire and it is chambered in 7,62×25(good for penetration), i think it is more accurate that MP-40(becouse of wobly overlapping stock on MP-40).

ppsh is heavier, some has low quality reputation but the ammo and fire rate packs a punch. Even the drum mag is heavy, ppsh is heavy in general. Mp40 lighter, more accurate but less damage less weight. If I have low ammo and enemy are far away, i use mp40, if u wanna sweep the floor, use ppsh. For me I want ppsh41 with 71 drum mag becuz I'm not sweeping or sniping, I'm having fun but ill also be happy to get mp40 and see how it goes

Its funny how people are choosing their gun based on stoping power & fire rate, as if any of these two guns wouldn’t send you 6 feet under before you can blink once. One well placed bullet is all it takes. Remember kids; real life isn’t call of duty.

I’ve fired both and while the MP-40 is one of the smoothest firing guns I’ve shot, it doesn’t have the punch or the rate of fore that the ppsh-41 has. German soldiers used them frequently because of their reliability and rate of fire. They were even rechambered to fire 9mm by the Germans.

No matter how many times I see an MP40 fire, it always surprises me how manageable it is. I would rather have the PPSH, it's ammo is truly fascinating to me. I own a TTC pistol and it's the most accurate handgun I own. 7.62x25 is capable of approaching 5.56mm carbine terminal effectiveness when fired out of a barrel of at least 16".

Not a lot of people talk about how the MP38 was originally a vehicle crew weapon, it's kinda lame for a reason, it shoots slower; saves ammo, has a folding stock with no cheekweld; compact, this is a great gun for vehicle crews, but Germany definitely could've used a better submachine gun for their infantry. Something for example like the MP28 or MP34 which both could use a bayonet, had fixed stocks and had a faster rpm than the MP40.

The movie "Stalingrad" a German movie, a German officer tell his soldiers if they find any ppsh 41 take them because they are better than their mp 40. In this test, despite two guns are being shot by the same shooter, it is not the way to test the accuracy and the penetration power. Guns needs to be fixated on a clamp or something like that. The way he keeps the ppsh is not the same as he keeps the mp. His left hand on mp stands on the magazine, on the ppsh stands very close to the right hand which makes the control harder, So not a true test. My opinion, ppsh wins in every kind of competition vs mp.

Both have advantages and disadvantages. But the production of PPSh took significantly less labor costs, it was cheaper. And the Soviet army has much more of these submachine guns, than Germans have MP-40, 38. The PPSh is not the only submachine gun in the Soviet (Red) Army. There was also a SudAev submachine gun. It is better to write in English PPSh. Sh is the initial sound in the surname of the designer ShpAgin. In the Russian language there is a separate letter "Ш". In English, you have to use two letters "Sh".

German units usually only had the platoon leader carry an MP-40, while his men carried rifles or the light machine gun. Soviet units had far more soldiers armed with PPSH-41s because these could be produced quicker and more efficiently than rifles. The large ammo drums used onthe PPSH-41 weren't very practicable though. Each drum took longer to reload and it was difficult to carry spare drums on you. I believe they also issued PPSH-41s with 30 round magazines later on for that reason. And of course the PPS-43 which followed was produced in even larger numbers and looks more 'svelte' as in a 'Russian MP-40.'

the ppsh spews out bullets at a much faster rate - about double the mp40 - which is a slight drawback because in a firefight you could quickly burn through a lot of ammo, but in urban and close quarters combat where a split second can determine life or death it has an edge over the mp40 which is probably why many German soldiers preferred it.

I’ve heard that this is a myth created by Stalingrad. The soviets used the ppsh and its fire rate very well there, and the german troops realized they needed to swap their Mauser rifles with smgs to match the soviets there. But German logistics plus smgs being concentrated in the German officers meant that German troops had to use captured Ppshs to get their needed smgs.

Awesome video. Not trying to be a armchair quarterback or anything but I did notice you flinch right before each trigger pull. Maybe you are not used to these beautiful antiques but this is extremely common and even seasoned shooters don't realize they do it. Interesting that your flinch tends to send your rounds only up based on the pattern and spread of the two guns. You can probably just compensate for it but a better way would be to train yourself to correct it. One way to do that is to load a magazine with a random amount of live and dummy rounds and when firing it take your time with each trigger pull. Focus on your movement and take it as slow as you possibly can. You'll notice the flinch when you pull the trigger on a dummy round. The idea is to stop that and to keep pulling the trigger slowly until you no longer do it on a dummy or live round.

My Opa was in the 8th Panzer Division 43rd Abt Panzerjager. In the 70s I had a book on military small arms. I showed Opa the MP40 and asked him if he carried it. He said no and took the book and flipped through the pages and showed me a Ppsh and pointed at it. Here that’s it. I asked why he carried that one he said. “Because it worked” Then 5 years ago I bought a book about the 8th Panzer Division and in the book was a mannequin dressed in a Panzerjager uniform carrying a Ppsh… I found that interesting

MP40. Lighter and more compact, especially with the folding stock. As a soldier you’d spend waaaaaaaaay more time lugging the damn things around than shooting them so as long as the weapon is reliable and able to get the job done I’d go with weight and ergonomics every day of the week. Plus you’d need a second man with a wheelbarrow to carry all the ammunition for the PPSH. 😛

The PPS-43 is sort of like a hybrid between the MP40 and PPSH. Its all metal construction and folding stock have the features of the Mp40. Its ammo, handguard, and magazine takes that of the PPSH. Honestly the PPS is my favorite SMG of the war. But between these two id take the MP40

I used to have an MP40 and now have 2 PPSH41s. For the fun factor the PPSH41 wins but not for ergonomics where the better one is the MP40. The ergo on a PPSH41 with a drum is terrible not to mention the problem of not having a pistol grip. The PPSH41 has the upper hand on the power of the round, solid construction, reliability and that it is auto and semi fire. The MP40 wins on ergonomics, magazine changing and handling. Just note that the Russians then made the PPS43 with a stick magazine a mag well like and a folding stock like an MP 40, what does that tell us? In the choice of only these two, I guess I would take the PPSH41 with the stick mags. If the PPS43 has a selector switch in my opinion it would be the best subgun of WW2 with the best features of both the PPSH41 and MP40 less the selector switch. Also the PPSH41 is only an inch shorter than an AK47. In a modern SHTF situation where I needed a subgun I would take the Vz26.

The MP40 is superior in terms of accuracy but the PPSH-41 is the better of the two in terms of rate of fire, stopping power, magazine capacity and reliability. The 9mm is a more accurate round, but the 7.62x25mm combines velocity of the 9mm with the stopping power of the .45 ACP. Another bonus that PPSH-41 has over the MP40, much like the Thompson for example, is that it can be used as a melee weapon due to it having a solid wooden stock. You can easily beat someone with it because of that. Imagine being in a firefight and suddenly you and your opponent run of ammo. Hitting or striking someone on the head with the PPSH-41 is like getting hit in the head with a baseball bat. The MP40's collapsible stock isn't really well suited for hand to hand combat, all though it still could theoretically speaking. The PPSH-41 is the best out of the two. There's a reason why the PPSH-41 is still remarkably in service in several countries and by many groups and militias world wide to this very day.

The DUX-53 and DUX-59 were submachine guns developed at the Oviedo Arsenal in Spain. They were based directly on the design of the Finnish 9 mm Model 44 submachine gun, which in turn was based on the Soviet PPS-43. Фирмы Аншутц и Маузер жо 1980 года копировали советский пистолет пулемет. тут даже не надо спорить. ППС - лучший в мире.

Not quite. Both sides valued _any_ submachine gun they could find as they were almost always better than bolt action rifles in the context of the fighting they were involved in. They absolutely did not have the luxury on the Eastern Front to pick between the two (especially the Axis). The PPS43 (PPSH replacement) of course appears to have taken many of the features of the MP40 including the slower rate of fire and folding stock.

But by comparison the M1 carbine was much lighter - at a bit over 5 lbs -, fired a significantly more powerful round, was more accurate, and had a much greater effective range than either the MP40 or the PPSH.
