Chinese-built light rail in Ethiopia changes lives

Ethiopia's first light rail train system has been launched in the capital Addis Ababa since September 2015. The 34km light-rail project, which was built by China’s Eryuan Engineering Group, is the first fully electric train service in sub-Saharan Africa. CCTVNEWS reporter toured the project and experienced how it's changing traffic conditions and lives throughout the city.

China needs to do more of this because the West won't: they screwed up the continent and don't need it anymore. but China does to actually help the country so hopefully we'll see more of this.

The amount of jealous and hateful people this video has brought out is astonishing! This is just the beginning. There are already 40 more light rails being constructed. More train lines are being built that will connect Ethiopia to its neighboring countries. We're becoming a super power in East Africa and a beacon of hope for the rest of Africa. China has the greatest relationship with Ethiopia of all the African countries. Thanks to the EPRDF government we're marching forward!

Hong An Lol you are so delusional. China do not care about Africa, I was in China. They see Africans as animals. China is doing similar stuff that US did. Hence it does not attack but provide a loan to poor countries with high rate so poor country will have to pay to China. If they cannot, China could legally get some land or recourses from host country. Africa is a rich continent with resources, just think about it.

who invented this credit system ? surely not China. Many Chinese had to go abroad to learn this discipline. but anyways. The essence of commerce is exchange. under mutual agreement. Every country can have business in another land if the country has an open economy. From what I know, Indian companies have even bigger presence in Africa in many sectors, such as IT technology. When less developed countries upgrade their technology, they can also offer other things other then resources in exchange of other things. China has also been selling resources to foreign countries for years.

If you're wondering why the driver at 2:51 is pointing and yelling. It's due to a technique called "pointing and calling". Invented by the Japanese (of course) and in use in most asian countries and even some lines in America as well. It makes the mind more focussed because even if your mind overlooks a step in the procedure, the body does not. It also cuts away training time for new drivers in half, because it's easier to have muscle memory trained than brain memory..

the funny thing is that all the recent railway upgrades (Ghana,Togo,Ivory coast,Burkina faso,Angola) in that most useless of continents have been done by outsiders - my point is WHY in 2016 does Africa NOT have the ability to plan.construct.build & run their own railway network? "no country is built in one day" - yet you Africans never stop telling us that Africa is the cradle of civilisation - you had the head start and yet you are still one of the poorest continents on earth with the highest infant mortality rates, the most corrupt governments and the worst dictatorships.Don't you think after 73 years of independence its probably time to get the Europeans back and help you child like people out of your own self made horror story?

The issue is you don't need handout or gifts. Africa has continuously been approached aggressively with handout and creating situations to make you feel that you need it when it is your money with agreement to pay them high interest. The masses don't know who took it because your leader didn't tell you. He just said we need a loan from IMF. Then you take the handout and they feel they have the divine right to intervene and tell you how to live. None of their gifts are true gifts and it doesn't come without a cost attached. They say don't look a gift horse in the face but who said that ? You don't have to take everything people offer. The origin of giving gift is distorted. When people tell you that is totally reverse psychologically. The quote is misused and abused. If this falls through I don't think giving a gift is going to do anything! I could come and give you dirt wrapped in a box. Is that a gift! I gave it to you! You see the water down meaning of vocabulary. Africa really needs true friends ! Please be selective!

So far so good. The physical infrastructure, the management knowledge, the tech training and even the light rail corporation itself. But I am afraid that Ethiopians do not understand that urban planning can not be done piecemeal, it has to be integrally planned, so either you plan other developments around the light rail or you have to come up a master plan first which the light rail will fit in. Or else .. Fingers crossed.

As an example of how the Bitish and Americans "help" countries who have resources they want,I remember back around 1951 or thereabouts one of the Arab countries wanted to nationalise their oil fields and refineries whereupon Aramco started to pull the operators of the refineries and oil fields out of the country. I remember at the time that the refineries were standing unused because the "benificent" Americans and british hadn`t trained any of the Arabs in anything but the bull work.I remember the news networks were saying that if the refineries were left idle for much longer they would have deteriorated to the point that it would be cheaper to build new ones than to repair the old ones. The arab government finally returned control of the production facilities to the American and british, with the stipulation that they train local people to operate the company. So we didn`t voluntarily train local people either. I remember seeing this in the newsreels at the time, but I haven`t heard anything about it in the intervening years.I was just a teenager at the time so I don`t know what countries were involved as teenagers don`t pay too much attention to such things.

China want to get in the middle of Africa, unexplored and rich lands of South Sudan, Congo. Africa as a hole has huge potentials, but without highway and railways, it's difficult to develop the continent. I believe that China see money as a tool, not a master. They are playing a smart game where only them know the rules. Africa is getting deeper to their Web, they will get their money further ahead. China is the perfect complement to Africa, Africa is the biggest continent in the world, China has the biggest population. China is highly industrial and a giant in manufacturing, Africa is naked. China is poor in oil, africa has plenty. Where Africa show weakness, China is strength. It's a perfect wedding and money is the energy that pull them together for a kiss

Mainland China learn technology, management skill from Hong Kong and jacked up economy. Now China also teach these technology, skill to other countries in need. Mainland China used to copy the prosperity path of Hong Kong and now Mainland would like to duplicate the path to other countries. I am a Hongkonger too.

I hope the government will build the a good and save traffic solution. I heard from ppl, it is very scary to drive in addis and the rest other regions as well. it is about saft y it is not about what you have. Every city has to have qualified DMV for God sake. I am really happy to see the economy growing fast but they have to do it with secure and safe. Ethiopiaye yemechesh!!✌& 💓

Just so you know, the claim that "The 34km light-rail project, which was built by China’s Eryuan Engineering Group, is the first fully electric train service in sub-Saharan Africa." is incorrect. The Gautrain is a fully electric train service and so are numerous other commuter trains in South Africa.

China didn't built it they provided funds only, Eithiopia's state owned railway corporation built it because of it was given to Chinese it would cost 12 billion $ like Nigeria, not 475 million $ that it actually cost them to built on their own.

Yashraj Singh even it not a high speed train they still don't have the capability to build it that's why they hire the Chinese to build and train them how to run the train. It will take a long time for this poor country to pay off debt that the Chinese loaned to them.
