I watched my farther die online and could not travel from NZ to the UK to attend his funeral. I appreciate that we need to be calm and collected about getting answers , but answers I want. Jabbed I was, locked down we were for months, my kids education effected. I’m sitting here now and I want answers, I want people to be held to account. We could see this was a mess from the outset, but we were forced to abide, coerced if being polite. No, we do not need more political input, they caused this mess, trust has been completely lost. A political apology, who are they, sorry, it time for change of the whole system.

Congratulations to Professor Jay Battacharya for winning his case against the US Federal Government.

It’s do-gooders like Renton, who make the problem worse, not better. Someone with a sense of guilt trying to understand someone with a sense of victimhood will only create animosity against those who were never involved in human trafficking.

What about the West African countries that enslaved the victims in the first place. Will they pay reparations for their actions ?

Whats the difference between a miner in the UK at that time and a slave in Jamaica or USA, both worked 6 days a week, neither could run away, the miner paid rent to the mine owner, had no money left after buying food and paying for health care, clothes, etc, etc. Then he was in the same place as the slave, if not worse off, i.e. black lung, dead by 50yrs old. No reparations for the miner. This is utter, utter nonsense...............................

Do you think a slave was paid so they could buy food, healthcare and clothes? Was the miner owned by the mine and therefore not free to leave? Which mines and in which county? Not Wales.

@@phwbooth Untrue. There were laws (in part of Scotland at least) which prevented miners or their families leaving the mines. If the mine were sold, they were forced to stay on as part of the enterprise. Effectively, the miners were sold as part of the property. They were de facto slaves, even if the lawyers might shave hairs. Even without those laws in other parts of the UK, the original point is totally valid about life being virtually the same (often worse) for miners (and many other industrial workers) in the UK, when compared to that of the slaves. Neither had any power to improve their lot in life; both were subject to arbitrary punishment; and the working conditions of the miners were arguably worse.

​@@borderlands6606 Indeed - and there's multiple questions that would be exceptionally difficult to answer. For example... How do you differentiate between slave descended and slave-taker descended citizens of the nations of origin? And what do you do with people descended from BOTH? How do you harvest tax money to pay reparations in a way that doesn't tax the descendents, or people who aren't descended from anyone who benefitted from it? It's all awfully complicated and would cost more to administrate and calculate than it would to pay up fairly (Sir Humphrey would approve)... When slavery is still present in the world now, perhaps we'd be better "paying it forward" on behalf of those in the past, by preventing people's today from having to suffer the same helplessness they felt - I imagine they'd approve more of that than of an unthinking and unspecific reparations whitewash.

Alex Renton’s selective sackcloth and ashes is just a modern day parlour game where the rich participants pat themselves on the back for aligning themselves with the supposed oppressed. Being an historian involves resisting groupthink and here Tombs demonstrates he more than capable of this while resisting the supercilious barbs of the amateur.

Alex Renton strikes me as a very emotional and easily ruffled man, unable to hide his indignation at a nuanced differing opinion, responding only with sarcasm and obtuse hyperbole.

If the pompous chap who parades his slave owning ancestry is so keen to see reparations made, why is he so keen to spend other peoples money on it but makes no mention of having donated any of his own? If Britain should have to take a lead on this, despite already having done so by investing huge amounts in stopping the trade across the seas (leaving us with a national debt only recently repaid) then shouldn't those with actual clear links and privileges be the first to pay up individually? Unbelievably sanctimonious twaddle on a subject where the impacts of the wrongs committed are hard to break down in terms of blame and impact multiple generations on.

It's such a shame that the ideal of equal opportunities was so short-lived before the extremists got hold of the narrative and pushed the divisive idea that equal outcomes was a better target. Renton's snarky ad hominem attacks didn't help his case. All he did was prove that the professor was a far more able debater with greater in depth historical knowledge. And quibbling that 1834 wasn't 200 years ago. As if that made any difference to his argument was just plain childish.

Maybe Renton's too stupid to be expected to be a good faith actor? I suspect that the interaction of his performative benign activism without responsibility for having to pick up the bill has created a bit of a mistake in action?

As is often the case, people like Alex want to show that they are truly good people and distance themselves from slave-owning ancestors, but please don't self-flagellate on our behalf. While CARICOM might put forward a robust plan with tech transfer and debt forgiveness as what they are seeking as reparations, it is a fact that Caribbean politicians intentionally mislead the electorate by not correcting the assumption that local people will receive piles of money. So for Alex to characterize this as just a "right wing" understanding of reparations is incorrect. The average person in the Caribbean is not calling for reparations. Self-interested politicians, academics, and self-styled "activists" are the only people doing this. Caribbean people want their governments to get their act together and stop shaming us with this incessant begging. The majority of the historians Alex alludes to produce work with little intellectual depth. The standard of evidence used to declare their writings as historical fact is virtually non-existent. Eric Williams was a brilliant, Oxford-educated historian who would later become Prime Minister of Trinidad, but neither his brilliance nor the passion of his arguments make historical fact. The thesis of his Capitalism and Slavery is still debated among historians, but most Caribbean politicians and academics pretend this is not the case. Professor Tombs is spot on with his arguments. "Historical truth is not decided by counting heads but by the assessment of evidence".

As a former Soviet Jew living in UK for the last 30 years, I could easily prove that the Jews of Eastern Europe have no less reason to demand reparations from the UK than those whose ancestors were enslaved. I could claim the right to reparations not only for the fact that Jewish and Slav people were enslaved by the Anglo-Saxons for much longer than the Africans. But mainly for vastly limiting the Jewish immigration to the land of Israel before the WW2, when it was the British mandate. Only 15 thousands were allowed to come (instead of 50-100 thousands of those who would have done), due to the Arab revolt, not wishing to confront the Islamist leaders, and many other issues. Which of course, one could argue, facilitated Jews remaining in Europe and being obliterated by Holocaust. And it’s very concrete perished 11 members of my Belarusian family I’m talking about. Guess what. I’m not going to demand anything. Because I have a wide vision of history and, sorry to be so old fashioned, a sense of gratitude. I believe that Britain already made the reparations to me and all Jews of Eastern Europe. By defeating the Nazi, at some point fighting them on its own. By helping to bring the totalitarianism of USSR down, thanks to Margaret Thatcher’s influence on Gorbachev. By sending massive humanitarian help to the falling apart Soviet Russia in 1990-s (when I learned what marmite was). By allowing me to immigrate here legally, and by giving me a fantastic chance to participate in an advanced socioeconomic society, that the people of this country have been building for centuries. Through the blood and sweat. I came here to study with £3 per day in my pocket and with poor English. I HUGELY APPRECIATE what chance I was given. I worked hard, made a use of myself built a carier of a piano teacher, paying my tax, had a lovely family with 4 kids, and remained grateful ever since. And I wouldn’t allow some demagogues with a rather narrow history views to try and train me to become a professional victim. To satisfy their narcissistic saviour tendencies.

In fact, you are talking about the actions of Germanic tribes in central Europe more than a thousand years ago, before England even existed. I can't see that that has any relevance here.

If the CoE has some spare dosh perhaps they should spend it on the homeless in the UK? If Renton wants to assuage his own personal and family guilt perhaps he should donate his wealth and then go and live in Africa to work his guilt off?

Do you think malaria tablets prevent you from getting malaria? You probably do 🤦‍♀️ so l’ll educate you. They don’t. What they do do, is significantly reduce the chance of you dying of malaria if you do get it. That’s it. That’s the best there is so despite taking malaria pills you still need to try very hard not to get malaria because like Covid there are some nasty side effects. You’ve used up your one-stupid-comment-per-day so no more allowed today!

Slaves were owned by less than 0.01% of British and Commonwealth citizens. They know the families involved, because the other 99.99% of society had to pay them off to free their slaves. I would suggest, that this is where any reparation money should come from. My family history does not involve slavery, rather the reverse on my mother's side they were fisherman and farmers from Norway, on my father's side they were the poorest of the poor from Irish stock. So sorry, you are not getting a penny of my money through taxation to pay for the sins of a tiny minority. The way forward is for the government firstly to enact a special tax on the ancestors of those slave owners, this should be split 50/50 between paying back the UK tax payer for paying to free those slaves and payments to the ancestors of slaves in the West Indies. The sum was 5% of GDP at the time, so that is about £150bn to be collected from that handful of families that benefitted so greatly from this. Those old land owning families are still extremely rich, this wrong should be fixed with their money, since they benefitted.

Christians were buying slaves in order to free them, but we don't hear about that do we. William Wilberforce a British white man was the person who freed all the slaves, they never mention him. Churchil fought against slavery in Africa for free and risked his life. No mention of it. Britain led the world against the Nazis and freed all their slaves. The media is shameful.

We should admire Mr Renton sincerity in acknowledging the utter shame of his family. But is campaigning for others, who did not receive his bounty, to pay reparations on his behalf sufficient? Surely he must now dispose of all his personal wealth and submit himself to live as a slave for the rest of his life?

Regarding the brief coverage of the mRNA intervention, there’s now a court case in Australia against Pfizer & Moderna due to them bypassing the GMO (genetically modified organisms) Legislation, which I understand, is also relevant in the UK. If you were asked to take a serum containing billions of genetically modified organisms which hadn’t yet been tested for long term consequences, would you have volunteered? Just asking!

When your mindset is biased towards the expectation of a high death rate yet very few actually die, then that is your conclusion. A very bad take there. Those drugs were never safe - as they weren't taken through the correct safety procedures of testing - and also use a highly experimental new type of technology. There's also the fact that were other treatments, which were well established - but were completely dismissed and not allowed to be used. We have sadly found out how dangerous the new "treatments" were(see former BBC presenter Liz Shaw).

We’re apparently offered the choice of two perspectives on reparations. No.1, a sober, pragmatic attitude informed by actual, historical research, or No.2, the belief that we should all rightly become activists for the inversion of a supposed hierarchy of wealth, power and privilege based on a neo-Marxist narrative. Er … I’ll take No.1 please, Kate.

The CofE is implacably opposed to reform of leasehold arguing it will deprive charities of much needed funds, not lest of which it’s own, yet it finds £100 million for this ridiculous venture.

Privileged education means a more expensive one, only accesible to a certain strata of society. It definitely doesn’t mean a better one.

If Alex Renton thinks reparations should be paid because his ancestors, and through inherited wealth himself, benefited significantly through slavery then I have no problem in him making restitution personally but that does not give him the right to demand it of others who did not. If he wants an idea of how much of his personal wealth he should pony up, may I respectfully suggest he starts from a figure of 100%, and then justify reducing that figure. Finally I found his snide dismissive tone disgusting and unworthy of a serious journalist and more appropriate to a bigoted activist.

I wrote twice to Grant Shapps (April 2020 and September 2020) expressing concern that i and many members of the medical profession considered Covid to be a scam. No answer. Many wrote to their MPs with similar comments. Another person here in the same village also wrote to Grant got no reply and went to one of his day surgeries. All Grant did was waffle and refused to answer ANY questions!

Since the pharmaceutical companies told us the medications were safe and effective and would prevent transmission of the 'virus', and it has transpired these were lies, should every pound paid them be returned to compensate families of had family members die or for those that had suffered serious side effects?

I was intrigued with the chap stating that he is up for reparations for the ongoing effects of slavery, I would love to know the ongoing effects slavery. My understanding was the UK finally paid off my the debts to get rid of slavery in 2015, so as far as the ongoing effects I would say the UK had some of the longest effects of abolishing slavery and so perhaps Africa and the USA should pay us.

How many government MPs, civil servants and government health professionals had shares in the pharmaceutical companies?

One can think that the introduction of free wage labour introduced by the development of capitalism on England also contradicted the need for slavery. Thereby slavery was indeed particularly onerous in the process of that development and that that development itself was needed to make slavery immoral. In his ethics, Aristotle could not conceive of a world without slavery. Its also important to note that if individuals want to pay salve their conscience, that's up to them. But british society is diverse and many people come from colonies that were not enslaved, and many people's ancestors were badly treated by the Industrial Revolution. Don't try and salve your conscience through inculcating others into your virtue signalling.

Remnants of slavery? They died as the people directly impacted by slavery died. Psychological hurt due to historical knowledge of slavery is self-induced and can affect anybody with an acute sense of empathy. Economical impacts? There is nothing to say that any country that has suffered from slavery would somehow now be more wealthy had slavery not taken place. Further, that GDP counterfactual is riddled with confounding events - wars, innovation, investment, political reforms.... Good luck with estimating how those countries would be faring now in the absence of slavery. The OBR and other economic forecasters cannot even extrapolate wealth beyond a few years let alone several centuries. And a rarely state consequence of slavery is that many of those descendants of slaves would not exist if their ancestors had not been enslaved and transported.

Kate Andrews pathetic defence of what has been described in Hansard as "‘.. the greatest medical scandal in this country in living memory, and possibly ever: the excess deaths in 2022 and 2023." really is beyond sickening.

The supercilious Renton was almost unwatchable. The irritating giggling throughout his sanctimonious tripe was equally as annoying as his unimpressive name-dropping.

30:45 Jay, I would reserve judgement as to whether the care homes disaster in Sweden early on was caused by poor quarantining methodoligies. It is possibe that the care homes fiasco could have been a mirror of what happened in the UK, a panicked use of midazolam-morphine end-of-life treatment as spelled out in that hastily scribbled Ng163 (or the Swedish equivalent). Let's not be too quick to blame the Swedish epidemiologists, if it was possibly the panicked medical establishment that was to blame. We need to urgently do an investigation.

They doctors panicked enmasse, with senior older doctors and olderconsultants hiding either through ignorant early fear of the virus or worse fear for their careers if they were seen to oppose the overbearing media and bureaucratic narrative. So leaving lost younger doctors to dose out the murderous sedatives.

Alex Renton blames the slave trade for racism in this country. Who is one to blame for racism, particularly against black people, in Russia? Or racism in other countries, the Middle East, for example. It is a fact that Iranians look down on Arabs, regarding them as inferior.

The MOD needs to stop wasting money and stopping design by committee would go some way to doing that. Look at the Ajax "Scout", there's just no way that's a scout vehicle. They should have just adapted the very successful CRVT design which gave us the Scimitar, Spartan and Scorpion. Modernised versions developed using iterative design would have been far cheaper, more likely to succeed and quicker to delivery.

A couple of points about reparations & slavery. If the African or Caribbean countries were doing better than us, would we still be talking about it? And slavery? How about we campaign to eradicate slavery *today* instead of talking about what happened 170+ years ago. Who makes a t-shirt which costs £2.50 available on all our high streets? (Clue: Famous retailer PRI....)

Until recent advances anytime two cultures come into contact for the first time they fought and one enslaved the other.

While defending our own shores is extremely important the only people to benefit from an increase in arms production is the elite or those with already huge amounts invested in said companies.

As a person with Irish heritage I look forward to my reparations from the Church of England and Scotland. Why isn't the church addressing reparations for the people of these islands exploited for hundreds of years?

I disagree with the suggestion that China has become more aggressive because it can. More likely, as in common with most other autocratic regimes, the leader needs to shore up his leadership by giving wealth to his supporters and uses some sort of threat to cover for the elimination of opposition. In my view the real reason for China's increasing belligerence is a result of its swing away from government by a coalition of men to government by one man, i.e. a swing into increasing authoritarianism resulting in all the usual court politics associated with kingship.

Renton is such an archetypal sanctimonious virtue signaller. Why oh why is the slave trade so much more important then any other crime against humanity? The horrors suffered by others people across the globe in different societies have been equally appalling , but Rentons attitude here will earn him high moral status in the current climate, which he obviously yearns for. The race card trumps everything despite the fact that those involved and profited from it were of the same ethnic background themselves.

Kate Andrews is a poor interviewer. Her personal opinions are usually quite evident, and as other commenters say, she argues with guests who differ. When there are two guests of opposing views, she sides with one and challenges the other. I can't remember a challenging question she asks of Renton (what a piece of work he is). Why didn't she say, it sounds like you have personally benefited from the slave trade--what are YOU doing about it besides bleating and pushing your book? Jay and Sunetra were gracious to her, but she was ignorant and rude, still stuck in maintaining the benefits of the lockdowns and vaccines.

I'm very happy with my annual covid Pfizer vaccine! When I finally contracted covid it was like a summer flu, and I credit the vaccine with the prevention, and saving me from far more serious symptoms.
