"Marrying the right man is our biggest dream," one young Chinese girl's song goes. But while the cars and houses are coming easily to China's successful women, marrying their dream man isn't. Despite a gender gap of 118 men for every 100 women, China's conservative dictum is that a woman should not be too independent and that over 28 she's labelled 'leftover'. It means that most successful women struggle to get a date and with a third of China's millionaires now female an increasing number of China's women are prioritising their work life. The result is "200 million singles in China and it keeps growing...", as Johnny Du, the CEO of one of China's top internet dating sites, explains. According to Johnny Du the women also set the bar too high. "Woman are really picky; they want the man to be very rich, young, handsome, educated...". Some parents have become so desperate they are taking details of their single children around "marriage markets". As the ambitions of the West meet the traditions of the East, it's a dangerous cultural hang-up that's causing a social time-bomb.

Agreed! My parents said no dating in university as well, but they changed their views a year ago to "you may only date Asians", and recently when we got into a fight, they screamed at me about why haven't I gotten married yet (but they have been talking about wanting grandchildren seriously ever since I turned 18...)

+linvy kriselle I got married at 34 to a 5 year younger better educated cool looking guy. And I never compromised even though I was growing realy discouraged. Well, I looked for a man, and prayed to God and Jesus for a good man. And God answered the prayer. Pray girls, pray and pray and pray, and God will answer your prayer too. best wishes girls - do NOT marry under pressure!

+linvy kriselle I never felt pressure, but in my culture there really isn't any either. The only pressure is that women put on themselves, and each other, but I never followed that. My only regret is not dating more, because being lonely at any age is not healthy for the mind or soul!

I agree with what you posted. I live with my wife as an equal, and we get along fine. She use to be submitting to me because that was how she was treated. I don't agree with that. Cross culturing sometimes does not come out as easy as ones think, that is why ones still stick with their own race. In other word, some want to show off their new style of clothes they buy, and some are proudly happy with the same style of clothes they comfortably like to wear. While some people have experienced two, three, or even more times of marriages in their lifetime, i believe that the divorce rate and adultry in Asia is lower compared to the rest of the world.

+kk P In a America most older guy especially older guys who are rich marry younger women. They will not marry or settle for women their own age or a few years younger. Check out our Hollywoood older guys, they always marry a younger women twice their age. What do we in America call women in their late thirties, forties and fifties who men reject here in America? Think about it. How do you see societal norms, now? We have our own scale too. Just that we like to showcase other countries norm as just too contrast to ours. But, do not be quick to sorry for our older women because when they were young and hot they rejected and refused every men who knock at their door or they had too many criteria which could never be filled. But, now they are older and they bemoan being young again.

+MsYogaGrrrl Actually am this kind of man who believe women have earned their place in society. I came from a family dominated by women. Therefore, I have observed some of my women family members rejecting guys who I thought were credible. But, as years go by these same women family of mine ended up living alone despite their attainment and position in society. Most single individuals today are very picky about having a companion. Nevertheless, I appreciate your feed back.

+MacKenTayomo J That's an extreme assumption. Women are tasked with choosing a mate when they are the most attractive, but least equipped to choose well. We are also expected to earn our keep, rather than leverage our looks to gain wealth through men. So we live life, develop our character, are discerning with our time and focus on creating an enriched person. Men seem to only see women in the context of how women benefit them. If we're young and pretty (when men want us the most) then we should be what They want us to be....theirs. Think of your words and then apply it to your fellow man...you'd never think of them so callously.

  • @SergioGreyKnight

+MsYogaGrrrl I point to consider: you are allotted a certain amount of time and a hand of cards to do with as you wish. If as a man, I choose to not pursue a successful career, develop my character and mature then it would be foolish of me to whine if I end up a loser at 50 who had no skills, no education and no prospects. If you as a woman decide to prioritize your career into your late thirties or forties instead of creating and fostering a bond with a good man at your level when you are young and can do the choosing then you cannot be surprised if no one comes knocking when you are on your way to menopause to start a family. Women are perfectly entitled to pursue their own destinies as are men, but you have to lay in the bed you make. These "leftover" women are concerned because now well into middle age and well past their reproductive prime and they cannot land any dates, but they still have very, very, very high standards for what they will accept. This does not jive. The 48 year old furniture saleswoman cannot demand a hot 20-some millionaire. She does not have the cards with which to do so. But on a side note I will offer one thing: what pushes away men is not strong independent women, it is women who have no desire to prioritize them as important (and men DO make their women priorities in their lives when they have them). Consider this for a moment; you are hardwired to want to protect and provide for your mate as well as want to be looked to as a source of strength and comfort. But your partner has ZERO desire to look for you for anything like that, AND she prioritizes her work achievements instead of creating a family with you or cooperating together as a team. That is shitty and its why men are typically uninterested high powered career women. But if it is her decision to pursue that path, then by all means. But she will suffer the consequences of prioritizing work over family as will any man who also works so much he alienates his wife and kids.

I feel for this Katherine girl. I am engaged at 25 so I can only sort of empathize but it kind of drives me crazy how some people here just seem to get married or have kids only because it seems like what they're supposed to do. When I got engaged, my boyfriend and I had been living together over five years & if I had a dollar for every time I heard "Finally!" or "It's about time!" I'd have a lot of wedding money. Why are we conditioned to get married and reproduce as quickly as we can? I have my whole life to be married & I will only have my youth once. I don't see anything wrong with not wanting to force a child to share it's youth while I'm still having mine. And her parents sound like my mother. She always told me never to depend on any man or need a man to financially support me and then once I actually became an adult, she couldn't handle me dating anyone without a fat wallet. I was like, "Wow, nice contradiction there, Mom."

The problem with these woman with money they are looking for someone with the same level or status in life. While a man does not care about that really. Also why would a man be intimidated by a smart wealthy independent woman? When it comes to love money should not be the determining factor. So what if a man is not as wealthy or good at business as you are? At least someone is making the money to take care of the family.

  • @Pitchoo973

You don't have their mentality that why you're saying this. It might be true in western countries. Men will be intimated by independent women because they're afraid to not have control over them, it seems medieval, but it is the reality of chinese society. In other western developped country, society has accepted the fact women could be independent like men. If women are not submissive, you're not a man, quite shocking but it was like the same thing in Europe 30/40 years ago. Men going work while women are doing chores and raising kid at home. Love isn't the first factor in chinese society, wealth it is, they're materialistic people. Contrary to us, we marry someone because of love not because they have a huge bank account. You can see many chinese couple (talking about my parent generation and immigrants in foreign country) who last long seems to be joyful and etc, but the reality is they don't love each other (not talking about every couple, but there are many of them), it's all about the face even if within is rotten like hell. Marrying someone and have a family is more about a duty than the natural way of loving someone. But it might be true some of them are looking for the same statue. But let's remind you something, it might be shocking to hear some facts in China, but we in western side, we pass through the same thing, I mean about our industrialisation, our revolution, giving the right to speak for women, right for the laborers etc etc, anyway our history, we passed through it within a good amount of time, about a century. There is about 15 years China wasn't that developped like now, their evolving so fast that creates a huuuge gap with the former and the present mentality. The contrast is so huge that is shocking to us, chineses didn't have the time to adapt this evolution, that why it seems to fcked up to some people. As you can see older than 28 is a left over, in western country if you think like that your lapidate right away lool, it's because past 10 years ago and still in the country side, young ladies (teenage girl) were married to other guy in the same village, it wasn't about love, but the duty of the girl, they didn't take opinion of the girl. The chinese boy's parent give to the chinese girl's parent some cows, chickens or money, and it was deal.

I understand how society at large affects relationship so I will simply say China's men and woman have to mature to the realities of the times just like all societies. With all the knowledge that is available in this world today there is no reason for stagnation social or other wise. Like you said even in the western world social changes have occurred and the people had to adapt. Everything you wrote does not negate anything I wrote and most of your points was making excuses for why the society is the way it is. We are in an information age with knowledge of all kinds is now available but every individual is responsible for their own learning. The real failure in China's society is your government that tries to limit what Chines people learn to keep their control over the people. That is why China's social growth is being hindered. Also people in China have not gotten to the point of even pondering the evils of money in a society yet. That is why money is so important to them. It is still a childish mentality really. Nothing is shocking to me any more when you really start to understand life itself called the human condition. Even in China money is being concentrated in to fewer hands that will cause major strife in China's society that will lead to the government genocide based on China's past history in my opinion. China's government want to keep society like children to guide their thoughts anyway they want and these so called leftover women are the new casualties of China's lack of societal growth.

noobenstein Agreed. I need to open a school where i educate bitches on all of these stupid euphemisms for "complete cunt". For instance, :"strong woman", "independent woman", "liberated woman", "a woman with her own brain." These are all euphemisms to cover up the fact women who usually employ these titles to themselves are insufferable cunts no men want to be around. Women who nag and complain, nag and complain. Men aren't scared of these whores, they're TURNED OFF by them. Dating a "strong independent woman" would be like forcing yourself to date an elephant. The idea of dating an elephant is literally repulsive, same as dating any of the bitches in this video. Men need to be in charge of the relationship in order for it to work. Anything other than the man being in charge=2 people merely tolerating each other for the sake of being a "politically correct" couple. There's a reason bitches like these have trouble getting a man. MEN GET YOUR BALLS BACK! MANHOOD101. COM

Pitchoo973 You're actually completely wrong. In traditional chinese culture the woman is the one that controls the money and household in a marriage. Traditional chinese women are NOT submissive at all. It's actually not uncommon for the male to help cook and clean either in traditional households. It's very different traditional judeo christian cultures where the male has tyranical control over every aspect in the relationship. BTW, I would take these journeyman pictures "documentary" with a grain of salt. They clearly have an agenda to push. The translating, especially in the tortured beauties video, is so wrong it's almost criminal.

r6guy Yeah I'm wrong, Yeah my dad and uncles have all his wealth holder under their name, my mother who need my dad's permission to use any cent is quite controlling the money. And yes I'm pretty sure your traditional males who's helping my mom and aunties doing chores and cooking are laying on the couch helping them mentally. Idk from which textbook your traditional chinese woman is leading the family, but I'm pretty sure I'm wrong no ? And it was the same bullshit with my grandparents ! I''ve asked my mother why she didn't want to divorce, it would be better for her. She said you married once in your life, about family, tradition and image. It's quite beautiful right ? It's from that bullshit you can feel the real sens of chinese's marriage. Even when she's suffering like hell, they are still together. All this bullshit is because of the chinese culture and society. I know some aunties who have divorced, and I can tell you, the chinese community is looking down and trash talking on her because she divorced. But I'll tell you one thing, she's far better without her ex husband. All this shhit which happen to her is your traditional chinese. And your description, it is not the traditional chinese, it's the second generation who was born in a foreign country (precisely in an advanced country like europe or us) who knows about their parent culture and their new culture (where they were born).

This isn't just an issue in China, it's happening all over the world. Women put off serious relationships to focus on their careers, and once they hit their 30's and their youth starts to fade, they find that they don't have the choices they once did.

Then there is the issue of biology - which if central to their desire to start a family, their prospects for safe child birth goes downhill in the mid-30s to very poor in the mid-40s . Nature/biology did not consider our modern social, material and educational pursuits as priorities to reproduction (one of the fundamental purposes of life). In the end...you can't have it all. P.s. I am not suggesting that men don't have to consider age when planning a family, it is just that nature allow (viable) sperm production for a much longer time. Hence why you have Larry King at 80 with a young teenager

Mark Molson your right 100%, nowadays you see people in various matrimonial apps, come to find true love, but in reality they after your wealth or balance, you need proof of ur income, basically! Materialism people long lost of feelings, love, meet-up, introduce to each other, no feelings of love, people getting old because no-one helps no-one. Lack of mutual respect is lost, loving & caring for one other is lost, basically trust, respect, honesty, honour, all good manners is long gone, nowadays hatred, jealousy, envious, arrogance, ignorance etc is gaining more popular. People don’t want to get married, because they want a perfect spouse.

most asian people are ready to get married and dedicate their lives to their families, take up obligations and responsibilities of a full adult before the age of 26. the reporter said 26 as if that is a very young age, but it is considered pretty old in most other places in the world, especially for women. the song was pretty funny, but people seem to mistake the intent of the song, in places that are highly competative, like almost everywhere else in the world, many people will sell love for money, even men will be careful not to marry a poor girl, because many poor girls will marry a rich man for his money, leaving him a poor sad pathetic man who cannot earn a woman's love on his own. however having a woman OR man, who is in the same class shows that they are not marrying you for greed or selfish ambition but for proof of genuine affection. this makes a lot of sense, if you want equality in terms of gender, the world it should be this way.

Its actually not about beauty. It is about how she expresses her femininity. But that is not something you do or learn. It is how you feel inside and it should come naturally. A woman who doesnt have the feminine fire in her eyes is just a person, just like a guy. A woman doesnt have to be picture perfect as long as she oozes with femininity. But in todays feminist society this feat has slowly been lost. And the men doesnt really recognize this and instead goes for age and looks. And trust me, when a good man sees the feminine fire in a womans eyes, its brings out the best of him.

A real man would appreciate a woman who's doing her own thing without been stigmatize by society as a feminist. There's nothing wrong with been a feminist. What's wrong is men trying to keep a woman submissive, as u call it "feminine"... Haha.. Just admit that ur one of those who's scared of a strong successful woman instead of beating around the bushes.

Pascal Bolivar you have really missed the point if you think femininity is about a woman not being strong and doing her thing. A woman can be a leader AND feminine but todays society (old men?) has put femininity=weakness which makes women act more male like in order to succeed in their carreers.

This is the case in many parts of the world. Many societies expect women not only to be beautiful, but also to be mated by the time she has hit her mid 20s. As in being married. Used to be even in America if you were not married by the time you were 21, you were considered a spinster a few decades ago.

It is a shame that there is such a stigma regarding older single women, but I can understand why and the concerns. Being single and never married at an older age raises questions--it is almost better to have been divorced--that would be regarded as normal. The thing about being still single is that one gets set in one's ways. Being single and never married, I dated a divorced Chinese woman. Initially it started out great. Then she asked, "why have you never married, what is wrong with you?" I said, I have told you all about my life and my dating history already, so what is wrong with me. She said, she did not know yet, but surely there must be something, any man older than 35 and never married must have something wrong with him. I asked where from the over 35 rule, she said she read it on the Internet. I asked, so tell me, what is my problem? Is it my looks, my body, my education, my profession, personality, habits or what? She said no, not that; she has not discovered it yet, but there must be something wrong and she will find out. Then I said, you know, I could say the same thing about you--you were married for only a short time and then divorced, so there must be something wrong with you too. However, I am not questioning you and seeking to find out, but just accepting you as you are; so why are you looking for problems and reasons to break up rather than to be together. She got really pissed off.

Excellent presentation and subject. A lot of facts given. A little light on the attitude of Chinese men toward Chinese women that are successful. The men are afraid of the women, and the women aren't about to give up their independence and careers for a marriage where they are not an equal partner. That view based on personal experience. The Civil Engineer would make a very interesting relationship as she has not achieved the 'wealth' status of the others.and therefore will not be so zealous in holding onto her wealth.

We men admire such strong independent and wealthy women most of us don't care if they are richer than us they just want happiness and company and an extra plus we don't have to worry about her being a gold digger shes already rich! We just want company and are less likely to mooch of of rich women due to our male pride we will always be there only scum are only in it for money!

When they get turned down they hop into the Ferrari or sporty BMW they rented for the day and drive off. Some of these girls reactions are astounding. OH WAIT SHIT!!!! LETS GO OUT!!!! Women rarely marry down now in the west its about social status more than love. Google women and Harvard university the New York Times said women just go there to find husbands, a career was a second consideration. Its as tough here in New Zealand, mens economics are falling behind womens. I'm a independent man, thank god.

All I want in a woman is one who would cook homemade meals for me and is loyal. Honestly as long as they take care of their body and aren't fat then I could easily tolerate them as long as they aren't to demanding. Men really are this simple. We don't really care about money (but should a financial issue arise, some help would be nice). Thats really it.

Omfg the girl in the blue dress is so pretty O.O and unlike the others in the vid, she seems very well educated and well thought out. I think that there is no such thing as being "too independent". They are all adults, and should be fully capable of taking care of themselves even after their partners leave. For me a full (so everything until a masters I guess, no matter their grades) education, an open minded spirit and a rational personality is a must in a potential partner~

You cannot be sure what it means by "too independent". Sometimes the term refers to people who don't give a fuck. They just simply do not care about you or anyone else for that matter, other than themselves. The other word for it is selfish, or arrogant. These people make mistakes and offend you, and genuinely feel that it is okay, because if you don't like it you can fuck off for all they care.

Joseph Rosario Ok here's the thing. 1. Ever since they passed the one child policy in China in 1970's, it resulted to (on worst case scenario)- a)female infanticide or b) parents giving girls up for adoption because exclusion of girls from workforce have been institutionalize for so long so every parents know that if they want to be taken care of when they grow older- they need a boy. This led to hundreds of Chinese girls abandoned in orphanage, unwanted and alone. In comes the modern age wherein abortion will just do the job. Now, the policy has been revoked and China is pushing for more gender equality because women can actually bring in capital (gasp!). China's (and other country such as Yemen, parts of India and Pakistan etc) fight for gender equality is literally a fight for the worth of a woman's life. This guy's reaction reveals that he is either a) a mysoginistic fuck and frankly, a horrible human being or b) an ignorant, loser who's all talk and no brain trapped in his own little bubble. I suspect the latter. 2. The real deficit in the USA is not of men wanting to get married but men attending university. College application shows that women who have degrees outnumber men by at least 2:1. University of Georgia for example have a 2:3, male to female ratio. Naturally, university educated/white collared women prefer white collared men. That's where the trouble comes in. More women are getting better jobs and higher education. Men, fewer in number, who are in par with these women and thus more sought out, have more choices and unlikely to get married- or atleast until much, much later on. Source: Date-onomics Book

Very interesting. I've seen other documentaries regarding the *leftover* women before, but hearing about the *marriage markets* held by the parents was fascinating. It also says a lot about how traditional sum of these men are not wanting their wife to be older or make more money than them. Here in America, sum guys would be all over the sugar mama thing.

Our worth should not be defined by our marital status, with such a high divorce rate, being single is so underrated, one gets to decide on one's own happiness level and it's not dictated by how your partner treats you. I was married once, and now I'm a happier 28 yo single lady.
