Um Chinese/Asians don't want necessarily want pale skin to look western. In Asia for a long time it's been thought that if your skin was darker you were poor. If you had pale skin it showed you were more rich and didn't have to work in fields etc.

The procedure has merit, and was designed successfully to alleviate dwarfism. Dwarves, because of their short stature, often cannot drive cars, nor even reach their own kitchen sinks. Adding only a few inches to their height solves more problems than it offers. The women here are risking good health for vanity, it seems, if not a slight advantage in business work.

It's very unprofessional of whoever decided to leave out important comments of the interviewees and add in their own translations. She didn't say "I want to look even more western" also when asked on the street to comment on the model she said her looks "represents the traditional eastern beauty" also not translating the part where she said Chinese people are beautiful if you look at them in real life, but in pictures it doesn't show. I don't really understand why such a video exist if all it's doing is represent a culture in a way that it's not. Stopped watching and I hope this video doesn't become some kind of reference video that people are looking at to learn about Chinese beauty.

You forget that the statistics include foreigners going to Korea for surgery from China, Taiwan, Hong Konh, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, and Asians living in other countries. And the large majority get eyelids done, secondary in nose jobs usually objections. The remaining get jaw shaved but it's not as high as you think. The rest is skin treatment and makeup, I'd say cosmetics profits as much as surgery. Other ethnicities get work done more on lowering nose bridge, fuller lips, and body. But this is largely isolated in LA, as in Asia it's largely Seoul, Korea and Bangkok, Thailand, and a ton of people all over the world go for work in Thailand, sometimes just regular procedures because of the cheap cost.

It happen a lots in Asian people obsessed with light skin

The translation is not 100% accurate and they have deliberately left out things. For example, when the group of girls and the man were standing in front of the store (around the 5:00 mark), one of the girls said the woman in the picture had an "Eastern beauty", which was what made her seem ideal. Also, another girl said Europeans have deeper features, which look good in pictures; on the other hand, Chinese women have flatter features, which may look beautiful in real life, but does not translate to image well. I think these subtle phrasings do make an important distinction in interpreting whether a Western look is preferred. I wonder why they left it out.

There's some problems in the translation of this video. When the girl talk about the sexy poster girl, she also said she had the eastern beauty. This sentence was ignored. And when the girl talk about the importance of beauty when doing a interview, she also said after the first interview your ability also matters. This was also ignored. This video is also tortured.

There are certain features that are almost universally preferred across all races and cultures. Lighter skin, large eyes a particular body shape have been shown to be subconsciously considered more attractive. As chance would have it, a lot of the features humans are hard wired to be attracted to are found in European caucasians. I don't think it is fair to say they are trying to look "Western". Rather, they are trying to attain the features that are internationally toted as being beautiful.

if that were the case, then Asian women would have been trying to look this way before western film, western beauty magazines etc were introduced into their culture. As the world become smaller and Asians learned more about what the West considered 'beauty', it was only then that they suddenly wanted longer lashes, bigger eyes, started lightening their hair (many Asian women will even dye their hair brown...just so it's at least not 'black' and helps to differentiate them from other Asians with black hair).... it has even extended to many Asian women now wanting hapa babies (mixed) as they've been brainwashed to believe hapa babies are 'cuter'...that western men are by default, more 'handsome', etc. It's very sad because...as well know...there is beauty in all ethnic groups....

I think it's quite eurocentric to say Chinese people want to look "western". I guess they've got their own concept of beauty. I'd say they don't want to look western, they want to look like Hollywood stars, who have extremely perfect looks (only shown in movies and magazines). We western people don't necessarily look like Hollywood stars, almost all blonde and blue-eyed people because they're an invention, a hysteric method to show to people what's that supposed human perfection. "Regular western" people (I mean Caucasians in general) don't look like Hollywood stars at all and Chinese people wouldn't look like them, because that misconception of beauty isn't inherent to the human reality. You can find beautiful people in any corner of the world.

You could say that about the rest as well, and of women (and men) today. The standard of beauty keeps changing, and us along with it. Yes, having small feet was seen as beautiful and a status symbol - often the only way for a woman to marry into money. Beauty have been key since the dawn of time, and it is still like that today. Many women today have these surgeries for the same reasons - to be beautiful, get a better life - a man, family, money etc.

This document is from a Western perspective. Lighter skin has always been the ideal beauty standard throughout Chinese history because it associate with richer high class Chinese. Whereas, working class has tanner skin because they work in the field all day. What evidence support that they try to look Western? This is anecdotal speculation at best?

Holly Abbott I totally agree with you. It is so sad what people consider to be pretty! Western women go to tanning salons to get brown and make their eyes up to look more exotic like asian women. Asian women are having plastic surgery and whitening their skin to look more western. I have seen beautiful asian and western women. I say to women of all cultures embrace who you are, love yourselves and don't give in to the superficial society that we live in today. Cosmetic surgery can change and sometimes destroy the outer self - better to work on the inner self and to work on self esteem issues and realise there are other more important things to focus on. Self confidence and personality and a beautiful heart radiate a beauty far beyond the physical. Beauty is not just skin deep - I have met people who are aesthetically pleasing but as soon as they open their mouths and speak I am disappointed - at the other end of the scale there are people who are not perfect but their attractive, intelligent and comedic personalities make you fall in love with them. I blame the media for presenting lies - distorted images and air brushing! None of us see ourselves the way others see us - many stunning filmstars when asked admit that they do not think they are pretty! At the end of the day beauty will always be subjective!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lorraine Ashby Actually, he's right. For one, he implies that he lives in northeast Asia, so he should know what he's talking about. More importantly, traditional Chinese (and by extension, Japanese Korean) beauty standards have called for pale skin, small noses and and mouths, and large, dark eyes for centuries -- long before modern Western influence. It's really more of a coincidence that these standards match the typical Caucasian face, although there are a few cases of women (and men) actively trying to look "white."

Of course not all eastern women want to look western but if they do that is their choice - there are so many ways of approaching this topic but at the end of the day 'be careful what you wish for.' Well, Western culture and technology have influenced Asia and other parts of the world in countless ways. Images of Western beauty and commercials for cosmetic products and procedures, as mentioned in the video, have naturally found their way into Asia, among many other things. No one ever told Asian girls to go under the knife, just as no one has told any American or European girl to do so, but the things people see influence what people like, want, and eventually get. What I'm trying to say is that the "Western beauty" influence isn't as big a factor as the video tries to make it appear; again, the correlation to Caucasian appearance is more coincidental. I'm not trying to stir up racial divides or conflicts.That's all. :) Happy New Year to you, too.

To Jason CHINA & Raquel Joann: Out Of curiosity and to be fair to your comments I felt it only right to do a little research of my own with regards to the comments accusing East asians wanting to be white etc. These are the words from an expert: 'I lived in Shanghai, China in 1999 and also in Tokyo, Japan from 2001-2002. While in Japan I managed to visit Taiwan and South Korea too. South Koreans, like Japanese and Chinese have had a skin fetish for their women that preexisted any Western European contact. You can see this reflected in Tang Dynasty China which was roughly the same time as the later part of the Western Roman Empire. There were envoys that were exchanged but for the most part Chinese had never seen a European. There are some East Asian women naturally pale but most are not. Typical make up was used and in later centuries Geisha in japan painted their faces white as it was considered beautiful. Before people project their western values and racial hangups they need to learn the culture and history of the people. The extent of western influence has often been overexaggerated.'

That would be like saying: "black people want to look white because they're always wearing straight hair and more white looking hair." I'm sure you would argue with this. Full lips occur naturally in white people already. Big eyes occur in asian people naturally too. They just want those features along with the features they already have because they feel like they go together well. Asians who undergo plastic surgery have an asian celebrity in mind. White people who get their lips done, have a white celebrity or model with full lips in mind. White people tan naturally. The issue is more so that people idealize "Western" people. Foreigners are basically valued for their looks. But there is an error right off the bat in the video. A lot of Asians want whitening creams and such to keep their skin pale, since having pale skin means that you're "rich"( long story, but it involves the past ).

What I don't understand is the men who are looking for these pretty women as brides realize that their children won't look like that, right? Their kids won't be taller because mommie got a leg extension.

The funniest and most bizarre surgery was the leg extensions. I mean I have heard of hair and eyelash extensions but never in my wildest dreamed thought there was such a procedure as leg extensions. It's a shame that people feel the need to go to such extremes in order to feel beautiful and confident about themselves. Just be happy in the skin your in and what God has blessed you with.

My wife is Chinese, natural Chinese, and she is the most beautiful creature i have ever seen!! My advice to the Asian women whom have been brainwashed (yes brainwashed) by "western" society, the value of ones self is determined by the love you leave, the people you cared for, and how people remember you. If you died tomorrow what would people say about you? That you were brave, honest, loved, honorable, kind, smart, a good person with a beautiful heart and soul? or would they say you had a pretty face? There's nothing wrong with being short! I feel like no one is never happy with what they have. I'm 5'10" and a "blonde skinny woman" and I used to absolutely HATE being tall :/ I wanted to be average height and curvy like everyone else. But now I've kinda gotten over it, why would we want to look like everyone else? Tall or short stands out of the mass and there are benefits to both :)

Chinese traditional ( I mean for thousand of years) view of beauty are pale skinned. That's way before Western influence. However I do admit the high nose bridge and wide eyes has the western influence. We still use sun umbrellas which reduces sun damage to skin. Most Asian (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) beauty product have the word "whitening" on it. As a Chinese Australian female, I really don't get what's with the obsession of "tanning" for white girls, even going to tanning beds, going to the beach and get sun burns... Don't they realise its really bad for their skin (cancer) and super ages your skin? And then they wonder why Asian age slower. I'd rather take a few vitamin D tablet then go get a sun bath.

Will you please shut the bullshit. There are people who look hidious and are getting bullied but after a plastic surgery the didnt get bullied anymore and felt more confident. Its not wrong how would you feel if you looked like a potato ? wouldnt you have surgery to look normal like others. I understand your comment. but look at the other side sometimes people behave and feel better with a plastic surgery. What this model does is plain wrong i agree. But stop giving that religious crap. we both know that is not always true.

I find this so frustrating. I cannot personally change the world society's standard of beauty, but I wish it would change. There are many kinds of beauty, and people feeling like they should fit into only one defined kind is awful. I can't think of many things worse that people feeling the need to literally change their face to be successful/happy. Obviously I am white, but as a white woman I've still learned to form my own opinion on what is beautiful. I think it's about time the majority of the world remember to think for themselves and love themselves. Yes, some people are more physically attractive than others, but there are so many kinds. Being white doesn't make you the only kind of beautiful.

I find it disgusting that women NEED to be pretty in order to get a good job. What kind of sick society is that?! Can you imagine the pressure? It's awful. Those girls just can't see how beautiful they are and it's sad.

This is sooo stupid. Pale skin has been a sign of beauty and wealth in China, long before the western people. Big eyes, good chin, thin nose? That is just the beauty standard in the Asian countries just like it is in many other culture. Yes it is sad that some feel so bad about themselves that they want to change their face, but in the end it's their choice. As long as you have a good safe doctor it will most likely not harm you, and you aren't harming others.

The girls interviewed are all gorgeous!!! How can they think they need to change?

it was obvious that they already had something done +they did say afterwards :p but I think Asians are really good with makeup...having plastic surgery is just being greedy :(

There are many celebs in the west who are actually not tanned. And Europeans can come in all lip sizes. Many can have full lips.

This is hilarious to me the fact that all their lotions and things were created to whiten their skin and the majority of the shelves here (England) are packed with tanning products!!! I guess the grass is always greener!

They don't even translate well... They added with the first model that she wants to look Western, and ignored when they thought Shu Qi looked like an "Eastern Beauty". Biased...

I love how its exactly opposite in america. Girls want tanner skin and go so far to go to tanning salons or spray tanned.

Its not becoming more western! In India the darker your skin means you spent more time in the feilds and a lower class, having lighter skin means being in a higher class, not more Western, silly Westerners thinking everything is about them hahaah

This is really just the entertainment industry that is influencing the perception of beauty. People need to realize that they take already pretty or average women and modify their faces on a computer. They elongate their necks and change the shapes of their faces. Actually if you take a closer look people in magazines are starting to appear like what I picture a alien to look like. They are freakishly tall and their eye brows are so arched they are just ugly. The eyes are pretty when defined with eye liner and shadow but they over do it to the point that they make them look like a demon.

Becky Norris recently one mag had a 100% computer generated model and no one notice the difference only over time. IMO its because of conditioning of ppl to whats fashionable by media, internet and PHOTOSHOP. How can females /males be soooooooo stupid. If you have children they will inherit your natural features. (:

You do have a point -- Europeans have always had good press. There are unattractive white people out there, just like any other race, yet they've always portrayed themselves as gods & goddesses and set unattainably high standards no one, of any race, can reach. Hence photoshop. It's sort of like the ancient statues Europeans used to build, in which their glorious hero was impossibly flexing every single muscle in his body.

This is sad. Girls and boys around the world, you are BEAUTIFUL! No matter what race. Society makes me sick.

In places like China and Japan, 'Western' means 'European' or 'White'. In other words, American and British cultures, which glorify 'white' as being the ideal beauty, has influenced Asian people into believing them and their ethnicity is not beautiful just as the way they are.

Well in many Asian country, ppl consider pale skin as beauty but I dont think it has any connection with the Western complexion. The idea that pale skin is beautiful has existed for long long time ago cause our ancestors believed that, a woman who has pale skin doesnt have to work hard n' stay home all days long, n' pale skin makes women more "aristocratic". That's just a definition of beauty in Asian, like tan skin in Europe :p Maybe we all pursue the thing we dont have n' never realize how beautiful we naturally are :))

It only takes thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars to get a very intelligent, university educated, potentially qualified medical professional to do what you want.

I don't know what to say either. Whatever shall we do when people decide to get plastic surgery. I mean it's totally our business and we should fight against it! "Hey I think it's sick so you shouldn't do it, even though it's not illegal or even immoral". Is that the line of thinking we are going with here? Pooping looks gross too. Lets all go anti poop imo.

the problem is Photoshop manipulation, and people not knowing when a model they see has been manipulated with Photoshop. The place the manipulated images in a pedestal and they want to be like it. But it inst natural. It is affecting us in a subconscious level. Natural is beautiful

What's the big deal? people of every race, color, and ethnicity desire to be different. dark-skinned people buy whitening lotion. light-skinned people buy tanning lotion. short people wish they were tall, fat people wish they were skinny. skinny people wish they had curves. this is normal
