Children (1923) | A Poem by Khalil Gibran

Narrated by Daniel "Avi" Avinash
In this poem, Khalil Gibran condenses the hard and controversial truth about the relationship between a child and its parent and how God is the ultimate overarching ruler over them all!
Within 2 mins, he manages to argue that your child does not belong to you but to God and you are merely a tool, albeit an important tool, with which He uses to mould that child to be used for His glory.
And this cycle continues from generation to generation.
THE PROPHET
This poem "Children" is the second of 26 prose poetry fables from the seminal book, "The Prophet". In this book, poet Khalil Gibran talks about a fictional prophet Al Mustafa who had been waiting twelve years in the city of Orphalese for his ship that was to return and take him back to the isle of his birth. He is then stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses topics about life and the human condition.
Facts about "The Prophet":
1) Translated into more than 100 languages making it one of the most translated books in history
2) Has never been out of print
3) Amongst the best selling books of all time - after The Bible and Shakespeare's collections.

Every parent should internalize this poem. I have referred to it often throughout my daughter's life and it has served me well.

I believe children will seek those who bind them with strong values. I understand what Khalil is saying but our child need to be protected and be prepared for negative influences.

This is favourite from the Prophet, together with ‘Marriage’. I regularly remind myself of both in my relationship to my children and to my partner. It’s not easy to let go of the impulse to possess and control but it’s the only way to truly loving others and respecting them as separate and complete beings. ❤

Beautifully said Antoinette. You're absolutely correct! It's a conscious decision we must make. Our default thinking of power and control won't do us any good. Author Timothy J. Keller might be of some interest to you.

Exceptional. It's requested to please make a rendition of the poem "The Perfect World" from the Madman and "The Greater Sea" by Kahlil Gibran.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. As a poet myself I like the style. As a parent, I'm just not sure. Either way, thank you for posting.
