@@Michael-cq7lq I was referring to Desiderata, and I think when I was younger the words carried a tone of almost rebellion, a sort of FU to the "rulers" of society, a kind of how the world should be. Now they are more about how I should be. Never considered that before, thanks for asking :0)

You are so right .. it's the only way that we can keep our ship from sinking in this storm, the storm of life even before the events of this day... For we are not the first to have been tested.. here on Earth... And all of our forbarers have gone to their graves, yay... We must continue it is a mortal commandment from the highest echelon that exists in the universe.. this law of our Father in Heaven... That William Ernest Henley poem gave me chills! Powerful delivery! Subbed. The most evil trick ever pulled on men was convincing them that poetry was ever unmasculine, when the words of men like Emerson, Kipling and Henley have taught me more about what it is to be a man than I could have learned in a thousand lifetimes.

In full agreement with you, TJ Blaidd. And that is an understatement.. The fact that the word 'masculine' is under a cloud of late is one of the saddest occurrences since sliced bread. Just joking. But I am serious here, so make that '..since the big bang'. Honestly. The idea that striving for some honour, pride and steadfastness is considered toxic nowadays is very very unfortunate. This poetry is so powerful, has so much clout. Perhaps people shy away from it because it is so confronting, such a nose-rub telling you how meagre the catch is that you landed on the shores of the sea that is Life. Then again it must be understood (I think) that 'man' and 'men' oftentimes are metaphors, denoting or connoting 'person' or 'persons'. This is rather obvious. Poetry is all about connotation and implying the unsayable. Furthermore, one-syllable-words have special status in poetry for they are the embodiment of condensement. Also, 'person' is the least sexy word imagineable. Having said that, I vividly recall how a clutch of young teachers at a Department of English in a Northern town in The Netherlands at one time collectively scathingly dismissed the poem 'If" by R. Kipling, predominantly I felt, because of the last line. They also deemed it unbearably jingoistic. My simple take on it is that the last line is universal. An offering to all people. On a side note, I regret beyond measure how I (and many others) completely missed what, in one way or another, was made available to me at high school.
“Silence is a source of Great Strength.” “To a mind that is still the whole universe surrenders.” “Those who know do not speak. Those who speak do not know.” “Be still. Stillness reveals the secrets of eternity” -Lao Tzu
The eyes are attracted to the light, but the mind is trapped in the shadows. Luckily, some nights do not last forever. We are all like the bright moon, we all have a darker side. Tough times never last BUT tough people do 🖖

As someone that was without a father at birth. IF by Rudyard Kipling gives me chills every time I listen to it. I have set my own example of the man I need and yearn to be. I can read this poem hundreds and thousands of times as I have and it still gives me goosebumps. The man I need to be through the good times and the bad. Bad times are here and I am going to pull through with this added strength and wisdom.

Watching videos on KZread, About life-changing poems for hard times, The world around me fades away, As I get lost in the words and rhymes. The words they speak are solace, In a world that's sometimes tough, The poets' lines are pure and true, Their words, they're more than enough. Each stanza's like a warm embrace, That wraps around my soul, The phrases are like lullabies, That make me feel whole. The tears that flow down my cheeks, Are like raindrops in the night, As I watch those moving videos, I feel like I'm taking flight. So I'll keep on watching videos, On KZread, for sure, For the poems that they offer, Are a balm, that will endure.
As an Arab, although I'm not Lebanese( but Syrian), I'm proud to know that Khalil Gibran is world wide known writer
I’m not waiting around for the end of my time to come anymore. Thanks to those who are long gone who’s words still inspire today.
This might be centred to men, however sitting in my room angry and feeling hopeless, am drinking (better that than beer) listening to these poems, am in tears but my "defeat will bury all that will die in us". "to be understood is o be levelled down" i know this was said in the video these are powerful to me and my goal is more clear to me now than ever. "I thanks the Gods for my unconquerable soul" Hail the Asier and may Odin help me in my trying times and may Tor grant me the strength and may Fryja leave my heart open to love.

Can't hold my tears when i listen "If" by Rudyard Kipling...i always keep myself deep in this poem since i read it fir the first time
I listen to these poems when I stay very late after work, it’s a family business and usually get the short end of the stick on doing all the late night prep work for the morning the tedious work no one wants to do. So I go ahead and work without complaining. I listen and hear the poems and think while I work. I try to reflect after my full day of work what went good and how can I fix my faults.
If more and more people would read or recitals of such poetry, maybe we can listen to the our better angels!
Great poems written by otherwise great men who lived through the toils and joys of life and everything in between. Younger men especially should read and take to heart the lessons of prior generations of great men who still have lessons to teach and hand down to the present generation and so on..once heard my parish priest say good men live by virtue but great men not only live virtuously but rather influence others to live a life of virtue themselves.
Listening to this badly needed poem made me embrace my own many many defeats with love and kindness. Thank you for sharing.
