McLaughlin is my all time guitar hero..but ever since I heard him playing that guitar at Clapton's Crossroads, I couldn't stand it. The notes are soooo muted and no sustain of any kind, not even natural. Thank God he went with the Godins and PRS guitars. Carlos doesn't pretend to be a jazzer, but, these cats know soul when they hear it..and they enjoy being along for the sweet ride Carlos provides...

Sadly I agree with you. I have a really hard time understanding what people hear in the music (especially the tone) J McL has produced in recent times, compared to his stunning output up until the....early 2000s or so. After that, he lost me. I am a musician and a guitarist and I try really hard to listen and appreciate, but I just cant hear or feel it any more based on recent work. I'm still in awe of his prodigious talents and achievements, but......

McLaughlin is my all time favorite guitar player too. I hear ya on his guitar choice.. thankfully he didn't stick too long with this one. It's too bad these cats didn't keep this going longer though. This is good but I can't even imagine how incredible this band would have been had they gone on and kept this together a few years. I believe they only toured in Europe? Actually..in listening to McLaughlin again.. although the gtr is by far not his best..I think he still sounds great. I gotta check out more of the stuff these cats did together cause I'd imagine there's better tunes than this. This tune isn't bad...but it's not as intense as they could easily have done.

syn707: "Carlos doesn't pretend to be a jazzer" What would you call his LP's Caravansari 72, Welcome 73, Borbaleta 74? These LPs are pure jazz as well as significant portions of many other LPs. Santana is every bit a "jazzer".

Carlos Santana is considered a jazz artist...not that POP shit but his real music is purely jazz fusion...How could someone so influenced by Miles Davis not be!

  • @KickflipGnasty

@@peach495 He can play in a jazz context, but he's not a pure fusion player. He doesn't have the breadth of jazz vocabulary(knowledge of the chords/entrapment & approach notes/modal expertise) to be considered a "jazz guitarist". He's not a Holdsworth or a Di Meola. Jeff Beck I'd say is as rock as fusion gets.
