Chicago was never the same after Terry Kath died. Basically Chicago died too, in spirit anyway. They became an insipid ballad band. "25 or 6 to 4" is my fave. If you love Terry Kath's beautiful, soulful voice check out "Color My World"

Terry is the only guitarist in the band. Along with his amazing lead playing and outstanding voice, he's an amazingly strong rhythm player as well. He was solid in everything he did. It makes his death even more tragic when you think of everything the band lost with that one passing.... Terry was a monster live and in the studio.

This has been one of my two favorite Chicago songs since the 70s; the sheer joy Kath expresses in his vocals is brilliantly bumped by the bass & drums in full bloom. I'd love to watch you react to "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" next!

James Pankow (the trombone player) composed many of their hits. He has been inducted into the Song Writers Hall of Fame as have Robert Lamm and Peter Cetera. Chicago is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. I saw them live last month. Three of the original members are still touring with the band .... Pankow, Lamm and Lee Loughnane. They are all in their 70s now but still put on a great show. The band has been touring for 56 years in a row now.

A staple of almost every high school prom in the 70's was Chicago's Terry Kath doing "Color my World"... by the way, the version you reacted to was an extremely edited version. You might go to the original album and listen to the entire piece with Make Me Smile and actually runs about 11 - 15 minutes and includes Color My World. I think you'll enjoy the long version much more and the tempo changes you heard here in this version will make much more sense when you hear the full track.

Oh Yes !!! There can be a difference !!! Technically they never recorded a song called Make Me Smile or Colour My World. the band was surprised when the record company cut them out of - "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" - The live Tanglewood version is FIRE. 14 minutes. We were confused at the time because AM radio had one shortened version and FM radio had a slightly longer shortened version so we got the album and couldn't find it. That is until we found 'Ballet"

It's best to experience the whole "Ballet for a Girl from Buchannon" suite, from "Make Me Smile" to "Colour My World" to all the instrumental work to the closing reprise of "Now More Than Ever", but even just the opening bit does indeed Make Me Smile, so that's good.

Last night my husband hooked up Bluetooth to our outdoor speakers so we could play off our phones. Husband suggested we do a Chicago marathon. I decided to play uptempo songs (about 30 songs). Although I prefer the 70's albums, because of musical masterpieces, I played from all their studio albums. We both came to realize that they had so many songs that could have been singles if they had been with any other band from literally all their albums. They have created so many great songs that in their later years got pigeonholed as a adult contemporary band due to the record company's insistence on creating more of their very successful ballads. Don’t believe older fans that do not realize they never stopped laying down some rocking gems. Their catalog is so emense, it would take years for a KZreadr to due reactions to all their best stuff if done once a week.

I saw Chicago at an outdoor festival in Nuremberg, Germany back in 1976, There were over 100,000 people there. They were so good that the crowd brought them back for five encores. On the last one they said that they didn't have any more Chicago songs so they did "Got To Get You Into My Life" by the Beatles. I almost passed out it was so good. Fast forward to 2018, I had backstage meet and greet pass to Chicago at Circuit of the Americas here in Austin, Texas. I showed them pictures that I took of them in 1976. I made Chicago smile..

I'm one of the biggest Chicago fans ever. Love them so much, have been to many concerts and I own every album they've ever put out. That being said, you folks need to do a search for Leonid & Friends and listen to their Make Me Smile. They are the ultimate tribute band and if you know Chicago like I do, you'll see that they play the song note for note. Since all of the original Chicago guys (inlcuding me) are old dudes now, Leonid & Friends are a re-birth of Chicago. Catch one of their concerts. You won't be disappointed. They are awesome.

When I was a little boy back in the early 1970’s, my aunts and uncles were listening to all of the music of the day. And one of them was Chicago, and I loved it! My mother got me an eight track tape of Chicago’s greatest hits from Columbia records club. I played that thing nonstop. And I still have that tape, but nothing to play it on. You really should go back to where it started, and listen to the first song on the first Chicago album, Introduction.

As has been mentioned in other comments, this is part of a suite called "Ballad for a Girl in Buchannan". Interestingly, Chicago did not record this version as a single, that was done by the record company with selective edits and the members of Chicago found out about the shorter version when it came on the radio. As to the album, it's amazing, definitely worth giving it a listen. Great reaction.

On their debut album as The Chicago Transit Authority, you should play "POEM 58". Nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. Jimi Hendrix saw them playing when they were known as "The Chicago Transit Authority" at the legendary Whisky a Go Go in LA. He went to their dressing room between sets and told them, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, and a guitar player that's BETTER THAN ME! You wanna go on the road?" They said "Yeah!" and became Jimi's opening act on a national tour of stadiums and arenas.

James Pankow is the trombonist with Chicago. On the album, Chicago II, from the song "Make Me Smile" to the end of the is actually called "Ballad for a girl from Buchanon" or the "Male me Smile Medley" was all written by him. In my husband's mind, Chicago is the greatest American rock group, as they are all true musicians. They write their own lyrics and musical arrangements - only a small handful of bands can say that. Terry Kath's soulful vocals, the guitar solo in the middle, backup/harmonizing vocals and the drums make this song wonderful. Yes, LISTEN to the whole album.

Chicago - they write their own songs/lyrics/melodies. The album titled "Chicago" is actually "Chicago II" - their 2nd album. Their first album was titled "Chicago Transit Authority" but had to change their name due to name infringement (Chicago's mass transit system is called Chicago Transit Authority), so they just called themselves "Chicago" and the city was more than ok with it. James Pankow is the trombonist and wrote the complete melody is called "Ballad for a girl in Buchannon" and takes one complete side except for the first song. A rock band with horns. They are all true musicians. A mix of classical with rock, jazz and R&B influences. So much GOOD about this band. Yes, listen to the whole album.

I loved Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. Both were awesome, game change bands.

25 or 6 to 4 Studio... You will not be disappointed. And then after that Chicago's cover of 'I'm a Man'. (And of course, don't forget studio Lazy.) 🎹🎹🎹 🎸🎸

This song is just part of Ballet for a Girl from Buchanan. You really need to do the whole thing.

It just keeps giving! 👍 In my opinion, 70's Chicago = Amazing 80's Chicago with no Terry Kath, RIP = bleh. All cheesy ballad duets and Peter Cetera doing duets is not anything like Chicago was meant to be. This is my favorite Chicago song! Its amazing how that voice came from such a young, albeit talented guy! Its a sin how his life was cut so short!

Chicago's first two albums are near perfect. I highly recommend listening to both all the way through. One Chicago song I don't see getting talked about enough is "In the Country" which is also on the second album. There first two albums alone make them one of the greatest rock band of all time

Terry Kath sings like Ray Charles while playing guitar like no one else (not necessarily better than other guitar gods, but his style is unique). Classic Chicago died when he did.
