Chevy Volt, Holden, Ampera instrument cluster removal and repair for first generation

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome back to ‪@AutoScholarwithMrB‬ ! Today we are tacking a very common problem on the first generation Chevrolet Volt, the instrument cluster going black.
If your cluster goes black, you can have two problems, the board failing (somewhat rare) or the LCD panel failing (much more common.) You can replace the entire cluster with a used one but the odometer will disappear. The dealership can probably fix this with a software update and coding, but the car will run fine without it. If the LCD screen has failed, this video shows you how to disassemble the cluster and replace the screen with a donor cluster screen.

Here is my link to eManualsonline.com! The manual for the Volt is over 8,000 pages and you get every one of them here. A must have for Volt owners that work on their own cars: shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=510988...

i have this same issue with my 2012, i am at the same point you are, I see you can reprogram with software from GM SPS but have not tried it yet because i am nervous. If you can make a video showing the reprogram part of it, you will make a ton of people happy! Me included lol

Thanks for the video. I'm having the same trouble with 2011 Volt. I sent mine off for repair. Hopefully they'll be able to fix it, otherwise I'll have to get a used replacement

Could I use this method to replace the engine malfunction indicator light bulb? I didn’t pass this smog check because this light does not turn on when I start the vehicle. My suspicion is I need to replace the bulb.

Hi! Video was great. As these spare instrument clusters are becoming more rare, do you believe it would be possible to get just the part number off of the LCD screen and buy that separately? Thanks

So it tends to happen below 30°F. Pull the fuse replace. It fixes it everytime.

How can I tell if it’s the LCD screen or the board that is bad? The lighting on the screen on mine goes on for 1 second then off for 1 second, and continues that off/on while the car is turned on. The actual instrument cluster never shows/loads.

Mine wasn’t doing anything, but the only way I could tell is to get a known good one and start swapping.
