Chefchaouen, Morocco | The Blue Pearl

Today we head to Chefchaouen, the blue pearl of Morocco. This city is blue, I mean serious blue, which has made it a backpacking hotspot for the last thirty years. It's also home to some of Morocco most "high" altitudes if you catch my drift.

My friend with all respect to your research but you often talk about "the Spanish influence" in Morocco when in fact it is more likely the Moroccan influence in Spain, cause Morocco ruled the Iberian peninsula for some 800 years and not the other way around ...also the similarities you find with Mexico and south America comes from the fact that the first settlers in those parts were from southern Spain and many of them were Moriscos meaning of Moroccan descent ....

Yes exact. 800 years civilization Andalus, Amazigh. All the architect in Andules is in Morocco. Not in Saudi Arabia. Its moors Amazigh. Word berber is not right given by Western. It is Amazigh. Even jews Amazigh. Chefchouan is not to attract tourists. History in Morocco speak with for itself. Read influance of Amazigh islamic moors in Spain and Portugal. Amazigh build. Spain did not build in Morocco. Build by Moroccan hand. Moroccan handcraft is one artistic one of a kind. With all respect. Even French architect is below.

Small correction: There was no Ottoman influence in Morocco. Morocco was the only country in North Africa to successfully resist Ottoman expansion and maintain its independence.

I don't see your name here but is it Ben? I love your videos! Why, not only are they beautiful, but you present the history behind each place, which I find VERY interesting! That is why you are the best travel vlogger! Do you know all this beforehand, or do you learn it then present it? It doesn't appear you are reading it. Are you just doing so off the top of your head? I did an intensive trip of 20 days throughout Morocco in 2012 with a small tour group. My first tour ever and it was amazing. Could never have seen the over 50 places we visited on my own! Some places we stayed overnight or several days, some just a few hours, others just passing through while our tour guide made some stops and explained some history. It was just me and 7 Australian women in a mini van with 12 passenger seats. Chefchaouen was my favorite places in Morocco. What was yours? I think because of it's smaller size, it's blue beauty, and not being accosted by touts constantly. Re your mention of hash - I was approached too - I had read there is a very common scam which they sell it to you, then report it to the police who they are in cahoots with. The police extort you for everything in your wallet to not arrest you. You pay and they return the hash to the seller to repeat it all over again. Have you heard this? One of the merchants in Marrakech gave me his business card and it was a Jewish name (I'm Jewish) so I asked him if he was. Yes! He told me he was a Sephardic Jew. I was so surprised and asked him if he faced any prejudices in a predominantly Muslim population. He said NO! I found that wonderful to hear! Morocco was the most AWESOME place I have ever visited. What really stayed with me is that you feel as if you have gone back in time because of the medieval look and practices still done today! Until I visited VIETNAM in 2017 - which tied it for AWESOMENESS vs Morocco. So of course I have watched all your Vietnam videos too! I have visited Vietnam a total of 3 times now and can't wait to return - as well as returning to Morocco. I want to return to Indonesia which I loved, and visit Malaysia and Singapore.

Like the video as an person from Chefchaouen you were pretty accurate its one of the better vids I have seen. You didn't really go to the best places or the secret locations only we native know of but it was alright. Tho you did make some mistakes first one is that th city was created in the 14th century by Andalusians and other natives but it was already an location for people to go to and take an rest as it is an source for water. It became an city because it was an place for people to flee from as Portugal began raiding the coastal area so they needed an city inlands protected by mountains. It was founded by an rich dude which fled from Andalusia. Second is that the city is according to my grandma blue because of the jews, according to her the city wasn't blue but they painted it blue as it isolated (because at sunny days it would be very light blue and at cold days it would we the opposite) and it kept the insects out so people followed them and did the same. It became an norm and was an must in our culture it was also forced by our local government in the 1970s you can't build an house without having your walls blue. Third one it that you have the idea that we are Amazights we are not infact we are "Jbala" and Arab. The thing abt the Riff is that we are inhabited by 3 people groups. You have the famous Riffians which are amazights and are the biggest group. The second biggest are the Jbala which I am a part of and it is the one who inhabits this city and region, this one isn't amazight at all and are Arabs with an distinct dialect of "Jblia" and the cloths you showed is jbala clothing, Tetouan is an Jbala city and is there for an sister city of Chefchaouen(so is Tanger but thats disputed LOL) its an whole thing you can look up. Then you got Ghamora which are the smallest of the pact and make up a large part of Chefchaouens inhabitance they are an semi-amazigh and Arab people group depending on the person. Hope this clears some things out. Its an beautiful city with a lot of treasures and history and I am proud to be part of that community :)

The majority here in morocco are the native north Africans (Amazighs), actually there aren't so many arabs here and also it's rare to find Arab blood in Moroccans, at least it's rarer than African's and even the European's, so the difference is only in languages, I mean some speak arabic --I agree they're majority-- they're called Arab and the others who speak Amazigh language are called Amazigh and they speak arabic as well. Hope you enjoy this trip and Welcome

Amazigh people in Morocco are not minority, they're the majority, some kept the mother tongue of tamazight language some lost it unfortunately but yet most moroccans are genetically berbers also refered to as moors, speaking arabic doesn't make moroccans arabs but since they adopted the religion of islam 13 centuries ago they also embrassed the arabic language as a sacred language of the Quran.

Arabs where in tents. Dont have the architect. Moroccan government have to give tourist guide when landing. And asking money for tourist places is more than normal. In venice got tourist tax. In Europe many places. And Morocco has even dirham. Good mention amazigh. Every city have kings wall to protect the kingdom. Win wars against Portugees, Spain, Ottoman who never entered, French. The last is getting exit now step by step. All switching to English.
