Checking Out the MSI B650M Mortar: Is Losing PCIe 5 a Big Deal on AM5?
Uhoh! This video was meant to be made live 2 months ago! Welp, things happen and life goes on I guess. In this video, Wendell checks out another B650 motherboard, and gives his thoughts on the state of PCIe 5 storage! Woooo!

Probably not, since when was PCIE 4 slow?
A lot of people don't even know that PCIe 5.0 is only fully available on B650X motherboards, not B650 motherboards. To some exception, some NVMe 4X 5.0 lines are available, but they cost a premium and don't worth it IMO. Not to mention, those NVMes are not even out yet and from the news you need active cooling for them to work properly.
So this video timing seems WAY off. I'd say you'd wanna be touting the non X chips - the 7900 for this would probably be an ace paring.
I’ve had this board for a few months running a 7950x, works great so far. No complaints other than the position of the wifi antennas, ended up ordering an antenna with cable.
Is the I/O shield integrated?
"Time of shooting this which is October 23rd" lol thinking Wendell maybe forgot about making this video in the blur that was October and November
MSI Mortar has been my mobo of choice since b350, one of the few with decent audio circuits and a SPIDF output. Great for a compact build.
I'm just going to wait until the next AM5 generation. I only recently made the move to AM4 from AM3+.
Will the acrylic backing on the bench ever get peeled?
Hi this or b650 Asus tuf gaming plus?
About the PCIe slot placement, It's possible to have the m.2 slot AND a PCIe x1 slot in the top position, like the Asrock Z690 steel legend. Manufacturers really have to start doing this more.
Helpful video! Thanks! I wonder if this board would be good enough for a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. I like the MATX size, but not sure about using any of the current AM5 MATX boards for any of the AMD X3D processors.
Proud owner of previous Motrar boards: b460m and b550m - happy with them, works well with ryzen 9, will definitely be aiming at Mortar for next upgrade.
I’m good with PCIE4, drives are fast enough. I’ll probably go with this next time I decide to upgrade
Truly loving this eco power out of the box line from AMD, 3D versions even better despite the extra cost but I imagine TDP gonna remain the same.
I like the fact that the PCI-E 16 slot is lower, it gives me better clearance around the CPU cooler for the 7mm offsetting
It would be interesting to see a comparison between this motherboard and the Gigabyte Aorus B650M Elite AX.
Will buy this, thanks
Running this motherboard with a 7700X and a 4090, working great. Decided pcie5 wasn’t really necessary for gaming and won’t be issue an issues for years IMO. I’ll drop in the fastest available cpu at the end of AM5s lifespan this board supports and be good to go for awhile.
Bought this board for my sons build I did from Microcenter 7700x with free 32gb Gskill ddr5 6000 AMD 6800 Powercolor fighter. I like the board better because had 2 8 pin connectors at the top vs 6 pin connector with the Asus tuf b650 matx board that I also looked at. Its running great with 240 aio cooler max temps 60ish C`.
