Check Mate! Making the Kings: Giant chess set episode 7. Conrad Craft. How to

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi guys! Conrad Craft Here!
In this episode I am finishing up the last of the wood turning of the chess pieces for this giant chess set. (music begins to play...)
TO EVERYTHING....turn... turn... THERE IS A SEASON....turn... turn...
Its hard to believe how much footage I have of all these chess pieces being turned...not to mention all the pics I have of the process. Pretty sure I have officially spent more time sifting through and editing down these videos than I did making this entire set. lol. I hope you guys are enjoying seeing the whole "how to make a chess set" process. I have definitely had fun working on the wood lathe, and carving each and every detail from the complex knight down to simple pawn.
In this video I turn The Kings for this giant chess set. Once again, the woods used for the chess pieces and the chess board in this set are Maple and African Mahogany. the King design is a one piece construction with the finial cross on the kings crown being turned and carved in place instead of being added on later as is usual with most tournament chess sets and Staunton designs. I think, as far as the difficulty of the woodworking goes, the king is is a little easier than the other pieces except for the pawns. The queen has more carving on the crown. The bishops and rooks have very precise cuts which must be made for their decoration. And the knights........well, in chess the knights are truly their own animal and carving the knights is its own challenge and completely different from the rest of the process... so it is nice to be finishing up this chess set on a fairly easy piece. I AM SO READY TO PLAY CHESS WITH THIS SET!!!!!
I will be uploading at least 3 more videos in this series before its all over... so stay tuned my awesome friends!
videos left to upload:
1. completing the board
2. Turning checker pieces
3. Putting the finish on the chess set
I hope you enjoy this video. I'll see you in the workshop!
BEST REGARDS!
Conrad Craft

I have been back to this channel and video several times now to see if I have missed any new video. Loved the whole playlist and the set looks beautiful. Wish could had bought a set like that. Looking forward for the last video and keep up the good work Furthermore, if you ever decide to make another chess set I recommend trying your hands making a Chavet chess set from early 1990s. They were back then used in world championship matches and are quite popular and sought after by chess players and fans. Plus I love that set :D

Where did you buy that 4 jaw chuck from? What’s the model? You mentioned in an earlier post perhaps putting your plans/drawings of the pieces on a website, is that available? It’s been fun watching your craft and skill with this set you’ve created. Bless you brother!!

I still would like to buy one of these chess sets. The change I would ask is could you make a Templar Cross on the king? I would imagine you would make the cross area a round ball, then cut both sides of that little ball flat which would turn it into a small flat disk. From there would could either delicately notch it with 4 tiny almond shaped slits or just imprint / press a Templar cross (a cross pattee or iron cross), onto the flat disk. My wood selection would be the classic black ebony and boxwood with maybe a tung oil finish. Same for the board. Your design is one of the best I've come across!

I can't wait for the finishing video... This is just awesome... I like your design... You gave me inspiration.. I always wanted to make my chess set.. And now thanks to you I know what tools I need to get.. It's about $600 for the tools I don't have... And where do you buy wood? I know where to get maple, but I don't know where to get mahagony I'm from Croatia.. It's probably easier to get it in US.. Anyway Thank you so much for your videos.. I hope you continue your work!! ;)

I buy my wood from a supplier here in Houston Tx. You should be able to find a hardwood supplier or wood mill. (Millwork) company in your country I would think. The mahogany I used is not a "true" mahogany... It is simply called "African Mahogany" because it is a cheaper wood that happens to look and act like mahogany. It comes from several places in Africa.

I would really like to try to make that design.. But I think the knight is quite difficult for the first project.. What other dark wood can I use.. if I don't find mahagony.. What do you think about walnut? Is it easy to work with? Maybe you can make next series on some simpler design.. Like Making a chess set for dummies ;)

For a beginner I recommend a small assortment. You want a parting tool, a 1" skew chisel, a large (1") and small (1/4" to 1/2" )spindle gouge, and a scraper. Any brand will get the job done. The set I used in these chess videos was the cheapest set you could buy from harbor freight ( like $25 total) and you can see the quality of work that is possible with them when sharpened well.

Trollvisor ..... Both actually ;) I was turning these after work usually... So later in the day and with overhead door down. But i Actually think my light setup helped create a really dark effect to the background. I also usually wore black pants or shorts while turning these pieces. thanks for the comments! I’ve always had a question about turning. Why can’t you start off with a smaller blank as to reduce the amount of waste?

  • @ConradCraft

    @ConradCraft

    5 жыл бұрын

WolfsbaneFilms The size of the foot or base of each piece has to be quite large in comparison to the diameter of the stem and head of the piece for the proper feel of weight, ballance, and tip over prevention. You really cant avoid the excess wasted wood with a Staunton designed chess set. Modernistic sets perhaps... But those are not tournament grade designs... The Staunton is.
