Lets Make a Chess Set.

A chess set I machined out of aluminum. The finish is yet to come. I'm thinking of anodizing black and clear. Then spray a clear coat over that.

    Very impressive. I like the idea of black anodizing, but you might want to do the black pieces in a two-step process, where you anodize them black, then go back and cut some of the top details, so they have some bright aluminum highlights, at least for the capital pieces.

I think they would grace any chess players table. As to the board, I would go for marble tiles inset into a mahogany base with brass or bronze dividers.

    I started with that thought until I priced out the cost of the brass. Also the bronze Knight I machined (Another video) was quite a bit heavier then the aluminum Knight. So the aluminum would have to be weighted to make them feel the same. I think Brass and 303 stainless could work though. Or 303 stainless steel and steel with a black oxide finish could also.

  • @EdgePrecision

    @EdgePrecision

    Жыл бұрын

    I think there is a black nickle plating. But I'm not sure how it's done. Or even if it could be applied on top of a electroless nickel plate on aluminum. What could be done is 303 stainless for white and steel with a black oxide for black. The pieces would be a little heaver, but that would be OK I think.

  • @Chris-ho2by

    @Chris-ho2by

    Жыл бұрын

    I think that the black anodise would look pretty good on the aluminium, I have never used the black nickel, the natural 'satin' finish looks really good (a sort of gunmetal grey). I think with aluminium there might have to be a pre-treatment required as otherwise the nickel might peel, but it can be done. I thought that you were going to do a bronze + silver version having seen your last video.

  • @EdgePrecision

    @EdgePrecision

    Жыл бұрын

    The material is Aluminum. As to weight they are large for chess pieces so they have a good feel to them. Judging from previous comments and my response. The cost is more than most everyone would be willing to pay. There is the material witch cost me $300.00 from Mcmaster Car (They are expensive this could be less). Then the machining time. I think it could be done in a day and a half (Maybe). It took longer then this because I was recording video. So lets say 15 hours. At my even lowest shop rate of $150 per hour. That would be $2,250.00. Now add finish (To be determined) let me guess anodizing say a minimum of $150.00. We are up to $2,700 without packing (This would have to be done carefully) and shipping to whatever location. So unless you are very serious about chess, I don't think there are many people willing to spend that kind of money. Thanks!

Wax bc that can be conditioned later, but a epoxy lacquer might be a good option too. The ebony is one of the hardest wood out there but even that would get scratches from aluminiumoxide. Are you referring to the Esprit TNG files? If so I'm mot sure you could use them unless you have the same machine configuration. But the solid models I use for Esprit are .stp files usually. These could be imported to any cad or cam software. All these parts could be machined on a lathe. Then moved to a mill with a 4th axis with a few alterations in the machining strategies. By surfacing some of the 5 axis cuts and angle areas. On the Rook, Knight and King this would be required. The Kings crown would not be exactly the same but it would be very close. I could send you the step files. Send me a email at peter.edge.pre@gmail.com put in the description Chess part models so I don't delete it.

    I was wondering if you prefer mazatrol over your cam software for intermediate difficulty jobs?

    The only time I use Mazatrol is to bore soft jaws. Otherwise I never use it.

    Do you sell chess sets like this? I've been looking for a machined set exactly like this. How much would it cost to have a set made?

    I haven't calculated a price. It would be in the area of at least above $2000.00. And that would not include a board. So I really don't think many people would want to pay that kind of money.

    Yes but first I need to to a little pre finishing in certain areas. Everything shows thru anodizing.
