Zebra Wood Inlay Chessboard

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This Chessboard is made from 180 pieces of timber!
Finally I made a Chessboard for my grandfather's chess set which was passed down to me from my dad who was an avid chess player and a furniture maker with a workshop and showroom on the M1 highway in Frederickton NSW.
I made several chess tables when I was 9 years old to sell for pocket money and there is a picture of the nicest one at the end of this video.
I used Huon Pine and Black Walnut for the squares which have a Rosewood frame.
In the top of the surrounding frame I added Ebony and Huon Pine inlays.
I included an intricate inlay in the edge of the frame made from 100 sections of timber. The edge inlay is Zebrano (Zebra Wood) sandwiched between layers of Ebony and Huon Pine.
The board is 600mm x 600mm and 22mm thick.

Really nice work, James! That's clever to use pins and divots for alignment. Making the inlay must have been quite tedious, but the time and effort really paid off. Like everything else you've made, the result is beautiful!!

@@onehandedmaker I am a programmer, but I do a minimal amount of woodwork. I started doing some stuff before the russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. I've built a table, learned & practised how to sharpen hand tools, and practised making wooden joints. Then the limited russian aggression in the South and the East of Ukraine russians turned into a total war, and I spent most of my time at work helping the people who defended the country. You are inspiring to do something with wood to take a deep breath before going on in life.

Subscribed, just came across your channel. Your work is incredible and even more so with 1 arm! I'm doing my own chess board as we speak and it ain't as good as yours! The alignment pins were genius. In mine I glued a pair of strips at a time before gluing the pairs together haha. Your method is much more straight forward and accurate. I'm up to the splines but now I've seen your inlays, I think I've got more work ahead of me haha! The vertical zebrano sandwiched between the thin strips elevated what was already an amazing piece. Stunning work mate!

I'm a chess enthusiast and I'm aiming to build a chessboard soon. Until then I have pics of most of my work on Pinterest - page is called MyBottleOpener. I got good at making magnetic bottle openers during covid, and my idea is to have a site dedicated for them, and a site for furniture etc. It's all a pipedream at the moment. It's great getting inspiration from you KZread woodworkers, it's what got me into woodworking in the first place during covid. Now it's a real passion!

I agree with others about the pins for alignment. That's fantastic! I've made a handful of chessboards using 8/4 stock because my chessboards have a non-flat surface (the idea is to more accurately represent a battlefield). The biggest problem I've had is corner alignment and have had to clamp one strip at a time to make sure everything lines up correctly without slipping. Recently, I came up with the idea of dry clamping it all together and then routing a couple grooves along the underside so I could slip in some steel bars for alignment, but this looks much cheaper, easier, and just as effective (if not more so). Thank you!
