A lot of what you get at that upper level is "nice to haves." They are typically lighter and fit better. More sound proofing. Better venting. And Snell helmets seem to cost more. I guess that's because Snell actually tests, whereas DOT appears to be simply a standard.

That's a good idea! To be honest, I don't think we'd see an appreciable difference. Of course it depends on the models we choose, but I know a couple $100 helmets that scored 4/5 or 5/5 on SHARP safety ratings. Similarly, I know some $600+ helmets that scored 3/5 or less. The safety/price relationship gets really random above $150ish. You're paying for less weight and more features past that point. ~RF9

It also highlighted just one of the minefield of problems when buying cheap crap off of ebay . I do not buy safety gear on line it has to fit properly to do any good this is where well traind shop staff and customer service is important. This will be true weather the item costs $30 or $30,000.

You should test the cheapest "approved" full face helmet you can find vs. an expensive helmet, instead of some painted eBay styrofoam with a cling wrap visor. E.G. Aldi Australia this weekend have a motorcycle sale on this week, $80 for an Australian standards approved helmet. An expensive one is anywhere between $1000 and $2000 (AUD).

Just a note ........... DOT does not mean its been tested. Its a design certification and there is no guarantee that Chinese made DOT helmet was manufactured in accordance (same for US or European manufacture) but I would trust US or Euro manufacturers more. At $30 (or slightly more) you get what you pay for and that's probably "cut corners" in quality

Helmets have a use by date usually 5 years from manufacture, if you've used it for 5 years it's probably 7 years old now, I'd get a new one, and branded one at that. You can get branded and safety rated helmets from 150

Great test, but is there any way y'all could perhaps do a more realistic expensive vs cheap helmet test? Test a high dollar Arai against a more affordable HJC or something like that. At least both of those are real, reputable helmets. An HJC is what I can afford. How much is my safety being compromised by using a $250 helmet instead of a $1000 helmet?

It's a good idea! We have done a couple things like that - putting a Shoei Hornet X2 up against an Icon Variant, etc. But testing a helmet around $100 would be even more interesting. ~RF9

None. Shoei, Arai, you are paying for prestige and a bunch of bullshit features you dont need, and their marketing. You can get a SNELL rated HJC helmet for $150, that recieved just as good ratings by Gov and Snell, as a 500-800$ Shoei. I fell for the trap/marketing. I bought a Shoei Rf1200 for 700 bucks......its a good helmet, but in no fucking way 550 bucks better.
