Cheap Trick was one of those bands that you really had to be there to appreciate their act. Obviously, Rick was a played the fool, but it fit in with what was going on. The solid drumming, strong vocals, and full bass sounds all supported Rick's silliness. He had very supporting band members. It was kind of strange when the guitar player was the frontman. Again, watching the entire show live was a really good experience. You always left feeling good and entertained.

Yup, I first saw them in San Francisco at the Cow Palace when they opened for KISS in 1977,but 2 years later saw this exact tour in 1979 at Spartan Stadium in San Jose CA In front of 25,000 fans. It was the loudest and best song set I ever heard from Cheap Trick, and I've seen them over 25 times live

I was always jealous of Robin Zander's long hair!!!!😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 Always wanted long flowing hair growing up as a kid especially in 1980 when I first heard Cheap Trick but my Mom wouldn't allow it!!!! 😂😂😂 LOL!!!! Plus I used to play "air guitar" and mimic Rick Nielsen!!!! I had really dorky short hair as a kid!!! I'd put on the baseball ⚾ hat bring out the tennis racquet (I'd hold it like a guitar) and pretend I was Rick on stage playing in front of thousands of people at some arena !!!!! LOL!!!!!🤣😂😄😂🤣😂😂🤣😄 I was only a little kid!!!!! 9years old in 1980!!!! KISS and Cheap Trick we're my favorite bands then!!!!!

@rockeraaj I would have to agree. Silent audiences are not strange for Cheap Trick. They play to adulating fans in Japan yearly or more often--and their custom is to sit quietly and listen. Having said that, this is one of my least favorite parts of what Rick does. He's an amazing guitar hero--but this doesn't showcase it to me. I find him best as a composer and accompanyist, both vocally (amazingly underrated) and as a composer. Good on ya, Rick!

I've never understood why Rick resorted to such a gimmicky look and personality. The boy could play, he didn't need it. Maybe it was insecurity standing next to Robin and Tommy! It bugged the crap out of me that they'd always show Rick's face pulling and stupid gimmicky guitars. Should have shown more of the master on the 12 string bass. Shame that Tommy left them so early! Glad he eventually came back though.

given his age he idolized The Bowery Boys and huntz hall for starters and still look also as trying to be like everybody else they tried to do a whole lot of stuff different Rick is a showman he's not just a musician who stands in one place on stage it goes back to his Rockford Roots upbringing

    A. Rock needed another pretty self-centered humorless guitar "god" like a hole in the head. B. The Way the band was presented from In Color to Budokan was to put Robin & Tom as eye candy on the front covers and play them against the two goof balls with short hair and he took it even further when on stage. Trust me, insecurity has nothing to do with it - plus after all Rick wrote most of the songs - you got it all wrong. It would have been tragic if Rick & Bun E. had grown their hair and attempted to look as handsome as R & T.Much better to be your own self than try to be something you're not. As for Rick making faces, read his lyrics. He was quite twisted, playing with images of mental illness and suicide.
