Oh how I wish I had an access to a ramp so I could work on my XM like this. Despite the hardships it seems like you’re so in your element and at the end of the day you’ve got a car that you yourself have fixed up. I just have to stick with my mechanic, who despite being an honest man is obviously not gonna put as much love into it as us owners would. And even though I don’t own a C6, or a BX, and definitely not an SM, your videos have already thought me a bunch about my own LHM machines.

Another great video Richard thanks. I collected my C6 today and greatly enjoyed driving it 70 miles home. Very interested in your thoughts on ride, regarding having the correct wishbones at the front. I've no idea what's fitted to mine (it's done 143k, so not surprised if they had been changed, I'll go through the invoices) but I'm going to check now, for sure. Mine does get caught at low speed over bigger bumps. At motorway speed it's silent and sublime, but at low speed not quite as composed. I'll be absolutely fascinated to see what you find 👍 Please keep up the great work

I'm still collecting my thoughts on the suspension on the C6, at the moment. It's definitely set up more for faster driving, and is sublime on the motorway as you say. Just gets caught out around town, but eventually I'll do a POV/road test on it and get my thoughts together for that.

Haha - I'm now going to go out and check my X7 wishbones and make sure they're not 407 ones lol. A home mechanic replaced one of those 'frip' joints before my ownership. Went over a pothole too hard and one of the bolts popped out. Almost shat my pants - one wheel was effectively decoupled from the steering. I'm guessing he didn't have a four post lift and couldn't be arsed to tighten the bolts up properly. All's well now and I'm glad it didn't happen on the motorway!

Awesome video - really like the Citroen hydra set-up - looks a total pig to work on though. I polybushed by Rover P6 front and back - now there's a suspension system you go into with both eyes open and a workshop manual as thick as a housebrick. Well, well, well worth it, did the rear with 'Progressive' springs too - ten years in and still a magic carpet ride.

  • @UPnDOWN

The suspension isn't too tricky to work on, but you do have to know how it works first. Polybushing is a wonder, IMO. I've done a lot of my cars over the years. Not for engine mounts, though - unless you're building a track car, it can ruin it on the road!

I can't speak for the 9-5 obvs (never even been in one) but I just remember that all the things the 9-3SS did badly (over-light and imprecise steering; poor/rock solid ride; slow to change direction) were just either unimproved, or even worse afterwards. The steering in particular was horrendous, the grip in the wet was shocking. It was almost like...I dunno, a Vauxhall Vectra! I did really like it, though, despite the flaws. If it drove properly I'd probably still have it, and wouldn't have bought the C6!

My x7 os arm is from a 407, ns is correct, although I measured the difference at 9.5mm.. I think you may have another problem with the wishbone bush bracket. With the 407 bracket the axis of the wishbone is horizontal and the axis of the bush is horizontal, perpendicular to the bush bracket. All good. But when you raise the tail end of the wishbone, the wishbone shaft going through the bush is no longer horizontal, and not perpendicular to the bracket. A rubber bush can tolerate that misalignment. A poly bush, not so much... Maybe the C6 brackets have an angle on them for correct alignment of the bush?

  • @UPnDOWN

I fitted Powerflex bushes to the rear axle, as it was crashing over bumps a bit. They transformed it; made it silent and tight. As for the pulley, I'd at least remove it and see if the bearing can be changed easily or not. The DW doesn't rev as high, so you may find that pulley is needed for the 5k+ rpm that the petrols can do (I think my VTS used to hit 7400rpm....not that I went barrelling into the limiter much, honest!)* * OK, I did.

@@UPnDOWN thanks for your answer! My bushes are still good, but I'll source some Powerflexes for when they'll be needed. I've managed to find a new SNR pulley in one store, they've had it sitting on a shelf for a bit under 10 years lol. But I'll try to replace the bearing on the current one to have it in backup. My VTS revs to around 7800, I think it's got to do with the 100 octane fuel I'm using. The ECU can apparently recognize it using knock sensors so it can adapt.

@@UPnDOWN I think I had one of the CV joints done but my mechanic had the devils own job getting one because the ones from Citroen off their database was wrong and he had to measure them, eventually got them it form a dealer in aberdeen. But then you know she is a bit odd with what looks like the c5 V6 Box rather that the C6 box and I bought her as a 09 plate and you say she was manufactured in 2007

I always have to laugh when I watch tutorials of people doing suspension work, almost always their underside is relatively clean and fresh looking, they zip off bolts and nuts like it's child's play, and then when I got to do it, it's a struggle to get each and every one of them off.

@@UPnDOWN I know. Seeing you pull that CV axle with nothing but hatred for everything in sight on your face was so relatable 😂 I had to get the angle grinder to cut the ball joints off my Mini last time I did suspension work. They had literally bonded themselves to the knuckle. Suspension is some of my least favourite parts of a car to work on.

I'd probably just buy the new bush, they were about £35 each and come in the housing, but the next video shows the solution so far.

I actually liked that car. The seats were excellent, as was the driving position. I also thought it was a really handsome old thing, and it went well, too (Hirsch remap). It was just the ride, steering, handling and stereo that really let it down.
